"Lavalantula" (2015)

Volcanic eruptions in L.A.bring forth hordes of prehistoric fire-breathing spiders from deep within the earth... and humanity's only hope is... Steve Guttenberg and the cast of Police Academy??
The stunt casting alone would make this SyFy no budget spectacular (from the director of the similarly ridiculous-but-fun-as-hell Big Ass Spider!) worth a look, but the movie itself turns out to be an action packed, stone cold tongue in cheek hoot that takes all the shark flicks that SyFy's pumped out so far this year, rolls'em up and smokes'em!!

Final Destination a couple of nights ago and then FD2 last night.

Showed my kids who are now old enough to handle the movies and they loved them.

Except my 18 y/o son who left 'because he was tired' lol

"Revenge of the Electric Car" (2011)

This intriguing documentary - a follow up to 2006's "Who Killed the Electric Car?" - traces the auto industry's continuing struggles to develop a workable zero-emissions vehicle. The crash of the American economy in 2008 almost kills GM's Volt model while Nissan struggles to bring their fancy new Leaf to market. Meanwhile, zillionaire wonder boy Elon Musk is simply worried about being able to keep his Tesla Motors company going.

My 12 year old - a budding motor head - was watching this on Netflix and even tho I know next to nothing about cars, I still ended up getting involved in this doc. Yes, I'm just as surprised as anyone. Entertaining and informative.

It Follows and Unfriended. These new breed horror movies have good concepts and are a good ride for a while before you realise they haven't bothered to flesh out the concepts at all. Shame.

Lotsa movies this weekend... the family & I are breaking in our new Blu-Ray player

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I" (2014)

Katniss Everdeen steps up to become the face and voice of the Districts' revolution against the corrupt Capitol in the action packed, next-to-last installment of the dystopian sci-fi franchise. I haven't read the books but this flick seems to be setting up a pretty epic final chapter to the saga.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" (2015)

Tedious housewife porn based on the inexplicably popular novel. A naive grad student enters into a relationship with a dashing, handsome young billionaire - who also happens to be a sadistic bondage freak. Hilarity ensues. Yeah, my wife wanted to see this one... so I took a bullet for the team. :D Unless you are in a similar relationship situation, there is no reason for anyone with a penis to sit through this movie. This one is for the wimmen folk!!

"Superman vs. the Elite" (2012)

Superman meets a quartet of new super-humans whose ideas about justice and morality don't exactly jive with his own, leading to the usual heaps of animated destruction and mayhem.

Done Final Destination 3 and 4, and will watch 5 tonight.

FD6 is apparently out this year... :)

FD6? How's THAT going to work? I thought that FD5 brought everything to a pretty cool conclusion ...

Watching a couple of horror flicks while the wife is out of action in movieland. I do wonder why I was ever, and I guess still am, interested in this genre...

Carrie (2013) - I forget the specifics of this story over time and can't remember if this is true to the original story (in a very modernised way) but it's pretty cool. I had no real issues with it.

The Conjuring - watching this was quite torturous, to be honest. I used to basically watch 100% horror movies all the time and I guess I built up a tolerance for them. As my wife hates horror films, I haven't really seen many over the last decade and I guess my tolerance has faded. Movies don't scare me as such, but this crept the shit out of me. I found it so disturbingly creepy, but in hindsight I'm not sure it was that much creepier than others I've seen, or am I just out of practice? I can't say I enjoyed it as such, as it was so freakin' creepy, but I guess it was kinda cool... in a messed up way. If you're like me and need to know everything about the real version of a movie supposedly based on actual events, I thought this site had some pretty cool stuff:

yeah I always hate horror movie, because usually most of the stories and plot suck big time, the production budget is very low, and the movie was solely intended to scare the shit out of you and it's not fun :D

i prefer 'smarter' horror like The Sixth Sense and stuff like that

Wow Geoff, Carrie 2013 was a steaming turd. Perhaps it's been the lack of horror movies for the last decade that set your expectations low.

Conjuring is great and since movies like the Ring its about the art of making horror films to build tension through good direction, sound etc. Conjuring was a good one.

"American Ninja 2: The Confrontation" (1987)

Michael Dudikoff and Steve James are back and this time they're sent to a Caribbean island to investigate the kidnapping of some U.S. Marines. Soon they discover that the island paradise is also home base to a drug cartel who are protected by an army of genetically-engineered (wait for it) SUPER NINJAS...needless to say, much ass kicking ensues. This virtually plotless, woodenly acted, so-'80s-it-hurts slab of chop socky cheez is basically 90 minutes of guys beating the crap out of each other. Silly as hell but such fun!!

'The Ring' is excellent, as is the sequel. I much prefer stuff like that too and agree the biggest downfall of horror movies is normally the complete lack of any storyline at all. But a good one with a good storyline is good value.

Oh, and as for 'Carrie,' I've always had a soft spot for that simple stuff. Didn't mind it at all.

Yeah, FD4 was "The Final Destination" and there were comments about FD5 and how it might work and in the end they rounded it up really well.

I guess they just start from scratch and hopefully have a cool new angle.

Remember Highlander, then the sequel, and then they did a third and said "ignore the second one, that was a mistake"

lol

I really like the Final Destination films ... so here's hoping they don't go cobbling together a load of old crap just for the sake of it ....

"Scooby-Doo and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery" (2015)

My 8 year old found this DVD at Wal-Mart yesterday and said "Daddy, we *HAVE* to get this!" - how could I refuse?

This is probably the closest thing we'll ever get to a "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park" sequel. The Mystery Machine gang is summoned to KISS World - the band's all-KISS, all the time theme park - to help the super heroic rockers unmask a mysterious Crimson Witch that's attacking park workers and scaring away customers.

It's silly as hell like all "Scooby" movies, nicely animated and the KISS guys seem to be enjoying themselves (there are even quite a few jokes at their expense about their merchandising habits). Kids will dig the usual Scooby slapstick and their KISS geek parents will have fun catching the various in-jokes and nods to KISS history hidden throughout the film.
