Just remembered this band... http://www.myspace.com/pinksteel

Interesting twist to 80's metal. Kind of Steel Pantherish.

Looks like I'm going to see this band again, at Download in June. My missus wants to go on the Sunday to see Stone Temple Pilots which means that Stage 2 (Stone Sour, Whitechapel, Dillinger Escape Plan, August Burns Red, Steel Panther) will be my salvation. Not one of: Dommin, Ratt, Cinderella, Saxon, Billy Idol, Motorhead, Stone Temple Pilots or Aerosmith takes my fancy at all...

Now why don't we get that kind of mix at Soundwave over here? :( Ratt and Steel Panther were actually two of the bands I wondered about, if they'd ever be a part of the line-up. We get all those other shithouse bands you mention there, but I'd kill for the inclusion of Steel Panther, Ratt, Cinderella and even Saxon.

You're welcome to them mate. I'd take pretty much any Modern band over stuff like Ratt/Cinderella/Saxon so I'll be on Stage 2 all day long, especially given that I like all the acts on Stage 2 anyway. Hopefully they give Steel Panther a bigger stage than last year though as it was way too crowded...

Yeah, I dunno mate. I don't know if it's just that I've been listening to Ratt, Cinderella and (a couple of albums from) Saxon for over a decade, but to me those bands you listed above play good, solid, loud music with a vocalist singing stuff. Whereas Ratt, Cinderella and Saxon play songs. ;) And good ones at that.

Yeah, I know it doesn't make much sense but I do find that unless a modern rock/metal band is exceptionally good and you're extremely familiar with their entire catalogue, a lot of the songs just mesh together and it becomes a little tiresome.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 80's/retro stuff as much as the next man. And a great bill that mixes the best 80's/90's bands with a load of Modern Rock/Metal would be the perfect balance for me. But I'd see pretty much any Modern band before I'd subject my ears to stuff like Ratt, Cinderella, and Aerosmith.

Its a damn good version as well.

they will also be releasing a cover of the Backstreet Boys "I want it that way" via download only, to celebrate playing the Download festival.

Should be funny!

Just out of curiosity, is there talk of a 2nd Steel Panther album yet? I must admit I'm getting a little concerned about all these cover songs they're doing. There is still desire to record their own material, yes?

That said, I am looking forward to hearing the Backstreet Boys song because (I don't care, rape me in my sleep if you must, for admitting it) I don't even mind the original version of that song. Ridiculously catchy chorus.

Seeing as the album only came out last year, I doubt they will start on a new album just yet as they have been touring all over the world, and these covers are merely the equivilant of single b-sides in an era when CD singles are a rarity.

That said, Ralph said today that he met Joe Elliot at the Metal Hammer awards last night, and Joe has shown interest in being on their next album.

I'm gonna be a right bastid! Right now! And Here! And how!

I've held my tongue for tooooo long, but having heard this band quite extensively...they SUCK dogs cocks, little dogs cocks, medium dogs cocks and big dogs cocks and cats cocks...in 3D,,and my cock (except mine isn't as big as the last few!) half the people who like them hated and took the piss out of The Darkness but at least The Darkness wrote some decent catchy fun songs.

This seriously is kid wank rock! Death to false metal........yawn, Manowar said that 20 years ago you stupid fucking twats (band not HH members!) At least when Manowar coined the phrase ..yes "Death to False Metal" is surely a Manowar inspired saying, it sounded like they believed it... SP just sing it like they want to be bummed by someone wearing a loin cloth...wimp...eee...girly shite!

Seriously this is rock for knobs!

It's a suckerpunch to make you part with cash, it's just a better executed version of Spinal fuckin' Tap but without the humour, and if your sucked in by this bullshit.....then abandon all hope of having any objective view of music...life..porn...anything.

If Steel Panther are what everyone is raving about....then thank fuck I like other genres of music because if this is what passes for good listening then I'm outta here.

Britny Fox look + Weird Al Yankovic songs = dickheads parting with cash

+1

Sorry, but I tried so hard to like this band based on some top reviews (many by people who's music tastes I highly respect) but I just cannot find the appeal.

Bottom line - It's the lyrics that are the problem.

Lines such as "I'll kiss your mouth even after you swallow my load". Now that's kinda funny, even hilarious the first time I heard it, but it gets old real quick and I certainly feel embarrassed to crank this up in front of friends and family. And that's just the first example I came across but the truth is that these type of lyrics are spread throughout just about every song on the disc.

The argument that every other glam/sleaze/hair band has lyrics like these is simply not true. Most of them use these sorta lyrics sparingly and make use of a little thing called subtlety, whereas Steel Panther unashamedly go ahead and spell it out, plastering these lyrics all over their music.

Now I understand Steel Panther started out as a parody band and their music is intended to be humorous and shock people but to me this doesn't make their music any more listenable.

Funny at first, and there's nothing wrong with having a joke but in the end this is not music that is going to find regular spins in my household.

I'm not looking to get in an argument. Just my thoughts.

Seriously Geoff you should be raped in your sleep by all the Backdoorboys and that chorus is as catchy as crabs.Just my take on the matter mate no meanness intended. ;)

The band's next release should be a covers album. The best of all the ones they've done. That is one cover album that I'd be anxious to get.

That was a really good cover, a really interesting and rocked up spin on the original...

My few cents on the debate of the band, no offense Nick, et al, but if these guys made a record of originals, sans all the naighty bits, we all know that it would fall flat in the bat of an eye.

No-one outside a select few would be interested in it.

The parady side is what is atrracting the audience, especially since the 80's were/are quite clown like and over exaggerated and that is the appeal for us that lived through the 80's and all the young sprites that are glomming on to it to make fun of mom and pop.

Sure the novelty wears thin after a minute or ten, but kudo's to the band for finally getting some recognition and more power to them for making a bit of cash while they are hot.

Can't wait to hear that version. :)

Just my 2 cents on the Darkness/Steel Panther issue. It's pretty simple to me. For a "normal" person to enjoy each band this is what would need to happen:

The Darkness:

- Kill Justin Hawkins and get someone who can do something close to what passes as singing.

- Employ someone who writes good songs and can offer a half decent hook.

- Employ decent musicians (like the guys who played on the Stone Gods CD -. But seriously, why did they not sound like that on The Darkness CDs, especially the debut? Was it an objective for the band to be as weak musically as they were vocally?)

- Forget The Darkness ever existed and just offer the world the Stone Gods.

Steel Panther:

- Keep the same songs, same hooks, same music, same vocals... just tone the lyrics down so you can play it in front of the family.

Simple as that. There was nothing right with The Darkness, whereas the only thing "wrong" (if you're a big whuss ;)) with Steel Panther is the lyrics.
