Glen
With Steel Panther, I love the lyrics, I love the music and I love the shows. I dont see them as any cringeworthy, +1 Add to that the fact that on the first 2 songs from the new album, the lyrics have been massively toned down, I really dont see what people (continually) moan about. Its good that you mention Skrapp Mettle - because here's the thing. That Scrapp Mettle album IMO is very poor....the lyrics are basically very similar to SP, but not really that funny and songs themselves are just not that great! I do truly believe that the songs on False Metal are really great with some excellent musicianship, and have no doubt in my mind that the new album will be every bit as good. We will soon see if SP can continue the high standard into album 2, cos if they dont I will be the first to slate it and file it under Scrapp Mettle. Cheers

I will genuinely be pleased if they've toned it down, as I do like their humour and their music but I'd like them a lot more if they kept it more subtle. A song like "It Won't Suck Itself" definitely sounds more subtle, I think.
DrumRman
Their lyrics are not smutty, they're juvenile/teenage-porn nonsense that is funny once and embarrassing afterwards. Reckless Love etc might follow the 80's cheese, but they try and keep it subtle enough so the quality music does the talking. SP don't keep it subtle, and so their (otherwise pretty good) music gets lost in the smutty and mostly pathetic jokes. Sure it's fun on first listen, but they are not a band to be taken seriously as a top-act nor one that makes albums with any longevity at all. A novelty band. Have you heard the new RECKLESS LOVE? The lyrics are WORSE! If you hate Steel Panther so much why keep reading INFO about them? Obviously you are fragile and sensitive and can't loosen up and have some fun. There's a reason why these guys can play WEEKLY shows and still pack the house.

The album version of "17 Girls In A Row" is far from stripped down. What most heard was the radio version with different lyrics. I played the uncensored version on my radio show last week. If you actually read what people were saying you'd realise that hardly anyone hates SP, nor says anything other than they're a breath of fresh air. In fact I've seen them live and enjoyed it (much more so than listening to the album). If I was still going through puberty I'd probably be playing their stuff daily, but these days I prefer buying albums with more longevity than just a novelty spin or two. I also listen to a lot of modern rock/metal and frankly they all take themselves a bit too seriously and fail to decorate their album covers with pictures of greased-up/writhing sluts - which should be written in law - but I retain my view they can't release 4 or 5 albums of the same jokes as it will get old quickly. p.s. Has anyone actually heard much of the new disc? I have seen a couple of bad reviews of the new disc so far, which is a surprise as generally the press liked their previous disc... DrumRman
I just got this, and I do not see how there can be bad reviews. If you loved FEEL THE STEEL you will love this one as well. Look for my review within the next few days! Currently my favorite song is Just Like Tiger Woods. Great mid tempo rocker that has that groove riff ala Ratts Lay It Down but I'm loving this album big time! If you loved the live version of "Critter" then you will love the studio version even more! Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Roll on.

I've been looking for one, but to no avail... No I saw some mag reviews, like Rock Sound. They mostly suggested this was more of the same with fewer hooks. It's a tricky one to review though given that whether you like the lyrical content or not tends to bias your view (as seen from all the debate). I'd like to see MR.com review this one as his reviews are always very helpful and neutral, as opposed to some...

TIM (2)
Alongside the review in Kerrang! this week (it got 3 out of 5, but was the main/feature review - which shows how big they've got) was a few questions to the vocalist about the Tiger Woods song. He said that Tiger Woods was an awesome athlete when he was partying and banging chicks and now he isn't he's shit - and that all golfers should learn this lesson if they wanted to be great. Like it! Captain Howdy
Not so sure if the album is as good as Feel the steel, but that one was easier to get into being that I had the Metal Shop album for something like 6 years before Feel the steel came out. Gotta say that I love lines like this from Tomorrow night: I'm gonna get some pussy, tomorrow night, tomorrow night. But tonight I'm playing Angry birds, like a million other stupid nerds. Captain Howdy
Theres a great bit in the song I love drugs as well. He has just been pulled over by a cop for doing 25mph on a freeway, and the cop says "Do you have any warrants?", to which Starr replies "I have their first CD, but you cant have it muthafucka ... later!" .. then drives off. Glen
Yeah it's pretty classic in places. Maybe not quite as good as the debut but as the Cap says, songs like 'Tomorrow Night' are amongst the best stuff I've heard this year - awesome riffage & chorus :-)
Captain Howdy
Tomorrow night probably has some of the funniest lines. Another bit that cracked me up was: Britney Spears is making out with Christopher Walken. In the back yard Iron Maiden is rocking. The couch is on fire but nobody cares. Charlie Sheen is winning in the bedroom upstairs. Like the debut, its another hook laden album, and I've been singing along to most of the songs or had them buzzing round my head after only two initial spins, so thats certainly a sign that this one will probably get better the more I listen to it. Amazingly, despite all the claims of "obvious lyrics", the song It wont suck itself, isnt all about blow jobs.
edwithmj
Its like the constant complaints that the lyrics are obvious as well. Well if that is a reason to slate them, then slate 90% of the rock, glam and metal scene, cause lyrically most songs are unoriginal and obvious, and you know exactly what words they are going to rhyme the words rock, love and hell with etc. Its fucking rock music, just a blown up version of what we all love, and maybe thats what some people dont like. They dont like the fact that what Steel Panther is doing is exposing how smutty so many rock lyrics are. 100% backed. Good music ruined by the ridiculous lyrics.
