You got it. It's from the episode when Cliff was on "Jeopardy" and that was his Final Jeopardy response. :D

None of them has a decent singing voice.....

Winner!

Every last one of them has made a career in music as a singer... while not being able to sing worth a damn. They all have horrific voices, and some of them are completely tone deaf. Some might be excellent songwriters or performers in other aspects, but none of them should ever have been put in front of a microphone.

Well did Yoko even have a singing career before John? I think that one is pretty self explanitory

Can we add Tom Petty to that list?

that's kind of subjective though. it is like someone saying Michael Sweet doesn't have a good vocal because they don't like his style

There's a difference though: Michael Sweet isn't tone deaf, sing off-key, or sounds like he's gargling gravel or sodomizing a feral cat. Liking the style has nothing to do with it. I don't like R&B, but Beyonce can sing. I have no interest in country AT ALL, but I can recognize good vocals and vocal harmonies when I hear it, and most country groups have very good vox.

I'm talking about people that are primarily vocalists (as opposed to guitarists, bassists, etc.), have made a career of it, but simply cannot sing their way out of a paper bag.

P.S. I completely forgot about Tom Petty... he definitely should have been on the list. Lou Reed, my only real exposure to him was the track he did for the animated movie Rock & Rule, which probably isn't representative of his other material.

P.P.S I supposed one could make the blanket statement "every death metal 'vocalist' ever", but I would not include them... as that type of vocal is the norm for the genre. It's what is expected. The people on the above list actually try to pass themselves off as being able to carry a tune in a bucket, but the bucket is a sieve.

Right. This reminds me a bit of your vocalist thread from a while back. A lot of those guys actually have decent voices, but chose to sing in a style that matches the music. Others, like Brian Johnson for example, just stick with music that matches their voice and can get away with it just fine.

Jimmy Barnes also is like Brian Johnson and sticks to music that matches his voice.

It's right not to include DM vocalists, as they aren't really singing. I love DM vocals, but it's more like another instrument than actual singing. If that makes any sense.

*chuckle* ... I think that Lemmy would be one of the first people to admit that he can't 'sing', but his voice is perfectly suited to what he does ...

It's a subjective view though, isn't it? I agree that Yoko sounds like someone beating a carpet with a cat, but then I love Motorhead, Neil Young and Tom Petty ... I also like Cradle Of Filth, but I appreciate that Dani Filth's voice is an acquired taste. One man's meat, and all that ...
