Great album runs of 5 or more in a row

Recommended Posts

I have been fleshing out my Journey collection recently, having previously relied on greatest hits discs. It got me thinking about what artists had a great no-miss run of 5 or more albums in a row in their career?

Journey had a run from 1978 - 1983:

Infinity; Evolution; Departure; Escape & Frontiers.

Are there any others with runs as good as this that people can think of?

Rush first 5 studio albums.

Interesting. Most would say the Rush run of classics started with 2112 in 1976, followed by A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and ending on Moving Pictures in 1981.

But still 5 in a row!

5 is a big ask.

I reckon the first 5 "ten" albums, IMO.

ten

The Name of the Rose

The Robe

Spellbound

Babylon

Good call, but 'Spellbound' has a bit of a question mark looming over it, imo.

Tesla's first five.

And we're stretching "great" a smidgeon, but Slaughter's five studio albums are all very good to great.

Bon Jovi actually have six, from s/t to These Days. That's pretty impressive.

I feel like Eclipse has had a fairly strong and consistent 5 album run, might even be 6.

Yeah, good call. You could argue they're still yet to put out anything too disappointing at all.

Also;

Ratt - 'Out of The Cellar' to 'Detonator' is five gems.

I would say Night Ranger qualify -

Dawn Patrol, 7 Wishes, Midnight Madness, Big Life, Man in Motion

My first thought...all 5 brilliant

Saga comes straight to mind...maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but a brilliant 6 run and perfect for my ears

S/T, Images At Twilight,  Silent Knight, Worlds Apart, Heads Or Tales and  the brilliant 'Behaviour' for a brilliant 6 run

Toto must be up there too...again not everyone's choice but a pretty flawless run of albums for me

S/T, Hydra, Turn Back, IV, Isolation, Fahrenheit and the fabulous 7th One

I was going to bring that up!  All of them are at the very least solid albums on their own in my opinion, and you get to hear a really nice progression in their sound when you put them together!

Well, that's the thing about these lists: everyone's tastes are subjective, so arguing over who's right and wrong is pointless.

Voice of Reason is honestly one of my favourite albums.

Bit of a ? hangs over Fahrenheit though. I would call it an ok album, but not classic.

Hey, we are all rock junkies and arguing the minutae is part of the fun! 😉

Good call on Tesla. I back that up.

Queensryche go close for me too. The Warning, Rage For Order, Operation Mindcrime, Empire and Here in the Now Frontier. I admit many would not agree on the last one though.

Anyway, for any band to put 5 great albums in a row is a major achievement. It generally means a decade on top of their game.

Wow, really? I love that album very much. Hard to say it's "better" than 'Slippery when wet,' but imo it's more consistent. There's not a song I don't really like on 'Fahrenheit' compared to a couple of fillers on 'Slippery.'

Cheap Trick's first 5 are also favorites and a nice way to start a career.

1. S/T

2. In Color

3. Heaven Tonight

4. Dream Police

5. At Budokan

For me personally I could never get into Journey or Night Ranger, but I do agree with Harem Scarem who are currently on an eight album run. Other ones that work for me are

Avantasia

Edguy

Epica

The Night Flight Orchestra

Threshold

Kamelot

Lordi
