Great songs ruined/lessened by poor vocals

Recommended Posts

I was listening to the last Sister album recently and especially the below song and couldn't help thinking how good this would have been with a singer that could actually sing

Anyone else have songs/albums/bands where they love the songs but feel the vocals ruined or lessened the enjoyment ?

Most of you won't like this, but for me a lot of songs sung by women......

For example some of Cher's late 80s AOR albums had some really good songs and performances from studio musicians, like ''Kiss To Kiss''

Not saying it's disastrous, but I think could have been better with another singer. Or if Femme Fatale's ''Fallin In And Out Of Love'' had been sung by a dude

Not my opinion, but a friend of mine thinks White Widdow is a great band but doesn't like Jules' vocals, he says they don't fit, are ''weak'' or not ''distinctive'' enough. But he's more of a ''mainstream'' guy anyway so I'm surprised he likes it in the first place

Certainly preferred Bryan Ferry's vocals on 'Hard Rain' to Dylan's.

I always get the feeling Adele tries too hard with her vocals too which really puts me off listening to anything by her

I'm probably going to get hung out to dry for this, but ... Pantera. LOVE the music, can't stand the vocals.

Bands like She Must Burn or Bleed From Within - screeching/barking like some sort of wild animal is all well and good, but not all the way through every single bloody song!

Wow, that's fucking terrible.

I don't think I like this thread.

Rather avoid the shit...

The only one i can really think of is "Black Label Society".

No song in particular, just generally.

Don't get me wrong, i really love them and Zakk just manages to pull off vocal duties (only just), but i just think how much better they would be if he'd brought in someone else to sing.

Also "Accept".

Could never stand Udo's voice ....and while am at it perhaps controversially "Motorhead". Lemmy, of course is/was legendary and his contribution to hard rock/heavy metal is unquestionable, but the guy could not sing for shit.

Yeah, Sister is a shame. They could be good but the vocals seem to get worse with every release. The new one sounds shocking.

As for Lordi, I'm not even sure if we're even missing out on great songs. The vocals are an instant put-off, but what goes on in those songs? I have heard some great riffs and music tracks, but what are the lyrics about, and would there be good hooks if a C*NT was not "singing?"

The only time I get irritated by vocals is when the music is great but the vocals are unintelligible....gruff but understandable vocals don't bother me for bands like Sister and Lordi as I think the vocals suit the sound....besides if every singer started to sound like Steve Perry I would shoot myself....lol

Osukaru...most of their albums ruined by poor vocals.

The second dude, Chris Tiann, wasn't bad. I didn't mind him.

The last Stryper album was ruined as i could not understand one word he was on about.

I dont want to agree with this... but Michael is a bit hard to understand lately.... despite sounding good. I did need to look at the lyrics on the first few spins.

That's a shame. Never really been too much of an issue in the past.

I'm not a huge fan of the heavy screachy Styrper any more.
THWTD was cool and all at the time, but these days I prefer the more mellow ballady stuff

Hist first solo album was exceptional.

I think Lemmy would be the first to agree! :)

Basically every Volbeat song, man their songs are catchy! but the dude sounds like the swedish chef off the muppet show.

Oh, now that made me laugh! (Makes me want to go and listen to them now though)

Great song, but the voice...

Ha, I like those guys vocals and all. Unique... kind of like a modern day Davy Vain or something. But yeah, I kind of always dug the guy's uniqueness.

    • I was a pretty big fan. Nature Of The Beast is a killer song. Saw them with Dave Gleeson from the Screaming Jets singing and he did an amazing job, but pretty sure they have a new singer now  I recently went through the two most recent albums before this one and there were a couple of ok tracks, but mostly mid. Fun fact: I saw the Angels a couple of years before Doc died at the Middle hotel in Ferntree Gully and they seemed to hate each other. Pretty sure Doc said nothing to the crowd all night. Fun fact 2: when they were building the transit bar in Melbourne, a mate and I found a service elevator that went to the roof, which was under construction. After peeing off the roof, which is always fun, we realised that we could clearly hear the music 5 or 6 floors below from a DJ I think. He was playing Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again. We started yelling down the No Way Get Fucked, Fuck Off bit thinking we were hilarious. Then soon we noticed people looking up, and for some reason they seemed to be clearly hearing us. Another mate then called us to tell us security were on the way up the stairs so we took the service elevator down and managed to laugh it off. Stoopid drunk story I guess, but fun days.
    • Cheeky, getting your artwork in there. I wonder how you did that.  I like the vocal track on #1 and that'd be my pick. I personally don't dig the female versions of songs, because I'm not a female (yet?) and as these are songs written by ourselves I personally feel the best interpretation is an AI dude voice taking the place of your dude voice.
    • Yeah, that's great but this is obviously an accomplished musician probably completely in control of this output... not done with Suno, I'd bet. There's definitely dudes out there who are perfectly capable of doing their own music, like this dude, but for whatever reason might not be able to put a project together, again, for whatever reason... but this definitely feels a lot more like AI feeling in the missing gaps for someone otherwise in complete control of what he wants.  Either way, it is very cool indeed.  As Darkstone says, I'm not sure paying is the way to get the best results. I'm also not saying it isn't, especially with other platforms that are not Suno. I think already knowing what you're doing, musically, is the best way to get best results, personally. Suno, for example, is just perfect for someone who might enjoy writing lyrics but is not in any way shape or form an accomplished (or even adequate, lol) musician.  But yeah, it's pretty cool for some fun. I'm not sure if you checked out my links above. Keeping them pretty quiet due to lyrical content, lol, but you might dig some of the stuff in my links. 'As the moment passes by' and 'I'll wait for you' are two of my personal faves. Along with 'Faith to fall.'
    • Yeah, musically it's what you want, but vocally... Maybe Alex should take some vocal lessons from Ken Tamplin. ;}

    • Yep, although I was never a massive fan.
    • Yes, celebrating their fifty years. There only two original members left in the band. Dusty might agree with me the Angels died when the original singer passed away.
    • It's just not the same without the Doc though...
