JamesEagle
Not sure if this has been done on here before, I couldn't find anything in the annals. Just thought it might be interesting to compare notes on what people think are the most overrated albums of all time, all types of music. Albums that are or have been raved about, but actually leave you cold. For me, three albums immediately spring to mind: Nirvana – Nevermind I quite liked ‘Lithium’. A pretty good song. Only problem was, all of the other songs sounded almost exactly the same, just not as good. According to many, it’s the best album of all time. Shame that all I can hear is one or two tunes, used again and again and again, with some pretty annoying vocals. Meh. Radiohead - OK Computer OK is right. It's okay, it's fine, but it's nothing special. There are one or two reasonable songs, but overall it doesn't get close to the excellent predecessor, 'The Bends'. The music is more depressing and less eventful than pretty much any album I can think of. Thom Yorke's vocals are more droning and lacklustre than ever. Lauded as the album of the year (whenever it was) by many critics, it's not an album I will ever put on in its entirety again. The White Stripes – White Blood Cells They were the next big thing, hyped beyond belief by the likes of NME and Q. This album was the best thing to happen to music for about a century. Or something. (The first 2 albums had slipped under most of the music press’ radar, certainly in the UK.) I bought it excitedly and … well, it was rubbish. Apart from the bearable single, ‘Fell In Love With A Girl’, the songs were monotonous, repetitive … uneventful. Everything Jack White touches seems to be subject to mass hysteria from the music press, but I don't think he's nearly as talented as (at least) 90% of the songwriters we talk about here on Heavy Harmonies. All just my opinions, of course. Interested to read other people’s contributions.
Geoff
Haha, as if we don't already know they suck?! I don't think you need to convince anyone here about them. I thought they were going to be albums from "our genre." I'll be interested to see what pops up here. Plenty of over-rated band threads, but probably not so much individual albums. I guess to start things off, I'd throw a vote towards Pride Of Lions' debut. I've admitted plenty of times it's a decent album, but the way some people regard it you'd think it was Jesus' first recording. Solid AOR, but not a stand-out in it's year of release, let alone in the grand scheme of things.

Glen
Now let me think......... Faith No More - The Real Thing Anything by Aerosmith Operation Mindcrime!! I know I'll get slaughtered for this but I just don't it. Lynch Mob debut - shit on cd & shit live too lol. Def Leppard - Hysteria - I rated it 77% , and not a percentage point more!! Anything by Rage Against The Machine. Slayer - Reign In Blood. Tinny production, short songs, far too frantic. seasons crucified it IMO!! Mecca - s/t - massively overrated AOR. Pretty Maids - Future World - there are some great tracks but it hyped beyond belief and to be honest Jump The Gun mullers it in every department. The VU - Phoenix Rising - one great song and a bunch of filler lol That will do for now..........

Geoff
Lynch Mob debut - shit on cd & shit live too lol. Def Leppard - Hysteria - I rated it 77% , and not a percentage point more!! Didn't take long for things to get crazy. Both brilliant albums, imo. Is The Vu that highly rated, or even acknowledged by anyone? I'd have never picked it. I do totally agree with you about Pretty Maids' 'Future World.' One of my favourite bands, but it all began with 'Jump The Gun.' I love 'Eye of the storm' from 'Future World,' but that's really about it.

Wow mate,a lot of thought in that, but I have to give it to you, you're pretty much right on the money, bar a few small ones I don't agree with. I think Shotgun Messiah are f*cking awesome and those first two albums are all time classics. I think Ten's debut is pretty damn awesome, as is 'Babylon.' And 'The Robe' is far from poor. I also really love Harem Scarem's 'Overload,' and Jalihouse's album is absolutely killer too. A few fillers, but the gems are amazing. But honestly, apart from that you're pretty much on the money. I love Love/Hate's debut, Black N' Blue and Heavy Bones but admit they're kind of over-rated.

You mean songs like 'Sweet sister mercy,' 'No bed of roses,' 'Through these eyes,' 'Wicked Sensation?' Seriously, how are they not as good as (or in my opinion, much better) than 'River of love.' I will give it to you that a lot of the rest isn't amazing (but still good), but 5 x 9.5-10 point songs on one CD is pretty impressive to me. 'Through these eyes' and 'No bed of roses' are actually two of my all-time favourite songs. Now let me think......... Operation Mindcrime!! I know I'll get slaughtered for this but I just don't it. Geoff
The Darkness - 'Permission to Land' - I know most people here with a good ear and common sense hate this rubbish as much as I do, but enough people didn't and this ended up huge, with the band becoming a household name based on this bad joke. The thing that really frustrates me about this is that once you take the gimmick away (to which I laughed aloud heavily at [not with] when I first heard it)... but once you take that away, you're left with one decent hook ('I believe in a thing called love') and one good song ('Growing On Me'). The rest is a pure violation of what music should be. It is a terribly below average rock CD. It is truly a collection of really dud, shitty songs and it's criminal that these guys enjoy success for such mediocrity when there are so many other worthwhile bands. Gibbo
Judas Priest: British Steel (Screaming and Painkiller both piss all over it from a great height) Nelson: After The Rain (I had the damn thing on vinyl AND CD ... two admittedly fantastic songs, but I'm hard pushed to remember anything else on the album) Guns n' Roses: Use Your Illusion (both of 'em ... enough good songs to make one killer album and a whole bunch of filler!) Black Sabbath: Sabotage (which is ironic when you think that two of my all-time favourite Sabbath tracks are on that album) Whitesnake: 1987 (I know the vast majority of people on here LOVE this album, but I just don't get it) Anything Metallica have put out after 'The Black Album' 30 Seconds To Mars (Jared Leto may well be the most chiselled man to ever front a band, but there's only one decent song in their entire back catalogue) I'm sure there are more ... I love the title track from Future World, probably my favourite Pretty Maids song, but the rest of the album is pretty poor.
