I love hard rock versions of modern pop songs

I was discussing this with a few of my good-time buddies from the forum recently, and I was all for it. Don't ask my why or how, because most the songs on the radio are so dreadful... but when one of these hard rock bands - modern or HH-style - cover one of these songs, I generally love it.

Am I a sick man?

I just saw that Underride covered 'Paparazzi' from Lady Gaga and although I can't for the life of me remember what that song sounds like, I'm now actually looking forward to hearing it. Halestorm's cover of a Lady Gaga song from this year was f*cking brilliant too.

So who's songs in particular would I really love to hear covered? I'm going to put it out there that I would love to hear some hard rock cover versions of that wonderfully breasted Katy Perry bird. There are some huge hooks (like that 'Firework' song) just waiting to be metalized. Even that 'Teenage Dream' song would sound awesome, I reckon. Oh, and that 'My hands' song by that gay Pitbull guy.

Anyway, I said it. I generally hate cover songs, especially of older crabby songs... but I love covers of certain recent/current songs. :)

I'm a lover of cover songs for the most part, and even a fan of tribute/covers albums. Covers of rock artists are great, but I also really like it when they go outside the usual box and go for something that normally wouldnt be on a rock album.

The above mentioned Bad Romance by Halestorm is a great example of how to show that the songs are not necessarily what you dont like about them, but the execution. In this case, Bad Romance is actually one of the few Lady Gaga songs I actually like (sue me), but there are actually cases of songs I hate being covered and I absolutely love the cover version.

The one that springs to mind is Jaded Hearts cover of Paid my dues. I fucking hate the original with a passion, but the cover version is actually one of my fave Jaded Heart songs.

Jaded Heart has done it before as well, with their cover of Easy Lover (which once again, I actually like the original) & Larger than life (I couldnt care less for the original), so its no surprise that they can take a pop song and turn it into a full blown rocker.

Steel Panther did a great version of I want it that way, and theres been quite a few rock covers of the Britney Spears "classic", ..One more time.

As for songs I'd like covered. To be honest, I'd rather not consider it as I like the surprise when a band does it.

1st Avenue - I Still Believe In You (Vince Gill)

At Vance - The Winner Takes It All (ABBA)

Axel Rudi Pell - Forever Young (Alphaville)

Eric Martin - There You'll Be (Faith Hill)

Hungryheart - Man In The Mirror (Michael Jackson)

Motley Crue - Helter Skelter (Beatles)

Perfect World (Kelly Hansen) - Just Like A Pill (Pink)

Steel Panther - I Want It That Way (Backstreet Boys)

Couple of others I like from various genres of rock would be:

Seventh Avenue - Sailing (Rod Stewart)

Gamma Ray - Its a sin (Pet Shop Boys)

Nonpoint - In the air tonight (Phil Collins)

Guild Of Ages - Hungry like the wolf (Duran Duran)

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth criminal (Michael Jackson)

Yngwie Malsteen - Gimme, gimme, gimme (ABBA)

Yngwie Malsteen - Beat it (Michael Jackson) .. music is great but dont like Ripper Owens vocals on this

Poison - Sexy back (Justin Timberlake)

Paul Gilbert - 2 become 1 (Spice Girls)

Biss - Rock me Amadeus (Falco)

I dont really include covers by bands such as The Beatles, Elvis, The Rolling Stones and Chuck Berry etc, as they are all rock or rock n roll artists rather than pop artists.

Actually The Baseballs did a rock-a-billy version of "Hot n' Cold", pretty cool if you're into that kind of stuff.

I remember T-Bone used to post hours of "cover" stuff, I bet he knows quite a few...

I liked that Cee Lo Green "Fuck You" video that got posted up a bit back. Can't recall the band, but I remember Geoff disliked the other cover songs they did. Some band that got a new singer I remember that. Might have been Crash Diet...

BUt as CH and others said I enjoy a good cover. I have noticed that a good number of those Blink, Green day, Reel Big Fish styled bands do a shit load of cover songs.

On the Revolver Golden God Awards the other night, I liked Volbeat's cover of I Only Want to Be With You.

I agree with Dan about JH's Larger Than Life. If I'm being honest, I remember the BSB hatred I had back in the day, but when I heard that song, I had a difficult time not liking it. When Jaded Heart made it even better, that was all the provocation I needed to get into the song.

Too many covers over the years to recall, but I've been led to many of them from this site/the folks on here. :drink:

I love covers of pop etc. especially when some cool guitars are added and a decent singer lets rip. I've been collecting them for years and sneakily put them on when non rock/metal heads are around. It's a way of getting to listen to decent music when normally you couldn't ;)

Some of my favourite covers are:

Bad Romance - Halestorm

Big Cock - She's A Lady

Black Betty - Electric Boys

Crazy - Iron Saviour

Dangerzone - Jettblack

Don´t Pay The Ferryman - Twinball

Drift Away - Anatomic

Eye Of The Tiger - At Vance

Girls Just Want to Have Fun - Trick or Treat

Help - Johnny Lima

Hungry Like The Wolf - Guild Of Ages

I Turn To You - WigWam

I'll Make You Happy - Rick Springfield

I'm So Excited - SunNSteel

Knowing Me, Knowing You - Tad Morose

Logical Song - At Vance

Love Hurts - Darren Smith Band

Mrs. Robinson - Kik Tracee

Music - Metalium

My Number - Lillian Axe

Playing To Win - Dungeon

Rock The Casbah - Trust Co

S.O.S - At Vance

Shout - At Vance

Suddenly - From The Inside

Take On Me - Vision Divine

The Chain - Seven Witches

The Neverending Story - Dragonland

The Wind Beneath My Wings - Sonata Arctica

The Winner Takes It All - At Vance

I wouldn't mind hearing someone do a tougher version of "Here We Go Again" by Demi Lovato. That song's amazingly catchy, and dammit if I don't like it.

This one's been around for a few years now but it's still my favorite "pop" cover: thrash band Children of Bodom takes on Britney Spears' "Oops! I Did It Again!" :rofl2:

I'm not even a C.O.B. fan particularly, but this freakin' kills me every time :)

Mike Walters has a pretty damn good remake of the Rebecca Black song "Friday" if you can believe it. Done very well. Pure 80's party anthem style. Search for it on youtube. You can even download it from the link.

Prefer the Graveworm version of this. Pet Shop Boys with Death Metal vocals, what's not to like? :D

    • If you go to the "edit song details" menu, you can edit the displayed lyrics ( handy to get rid of ugly brackets and prompts ), change the song title and change the thumbnail image.  You'd be able to do that to your tracks as well I think. Create a playlist for each of your albums and use your album covers as the images for your playlists.  They present pretty well on suno. The below link is for my playlist.    As for the vocals, I don't mind having female vocals on some of my tracks. As you mentioned earlier, I have absolutely no musical expertise whatsoever when it comes to instruments and I cannot sing for shit. I sort of think that it's like someone writing a song and then giving it to an Artist, Male or female, to interpret it musically. Think Desmond Child writing for Bon Jovi and also Joan Jett, or great songs by Jeff Paris being recorded by Vixen. Am I comparing myself to Desmond Child and Jeff Paris when it comes to songwriting talent? Hmmm... yes,  I think so.       https://suno.com/playlist/1581a017-9d55-4b0f-8ea8-555aa5b11d00
    • Good safe and well with the footage I've seen on news here in Australia it must be scary.
    • I can tell you that at the very least, there are people from FEMA working with some of the local businesses (my employer included) as far as looking at what aid is available to them. On the flip side, I've heard that one of the FEMA directors "got an attitude" with a few folks in the Asheville area and got popped in the mouth. I can't confirm that, just a story that's making the rounds.
    • Glad you and yours are ok Mike. There's been a lot of buzz on social media about the LACK of response from FEMA and the current admin. Have you seen or heard anything on the ground one way or the other?
    • Not sure if anyone has noticed my absence over the last 10 days, but I've only been able to sign in a few times from work over the course of that period. As some of you may know, on Friday, September 27th, Hurricane Helene slammed into western North Carolina and absolutely devastated this area, leveling entire towns in its path. In my 52 years on this planet, I've never seen destruction like this with my own eyes.  While my home and property were spared any major problems, our road looked like a damn warzone with all the trees and powerlines down. We were literally trapped like rats in a maze for several days, as even though some good samaritans were able to cut their way through the downed trees so we could leave the neighborhood, all roads leading out of this area were closed off, either due to trees and lines down, or due to flooding.   I was out of work for six days, as my employer had no power. We had no power here at the house for 9 days, with it being restored late yesterday evening. We lost several hundred dollars worth of food that thawed out from our fridge and freezers. No hot water after day one, no cell signal for several days, no stores or restaurants open for several days... If it sounds like I'm complaining, I assure you, I am not. I am grateful. My family and friends are blessed, as we're all pretty much back up and running now. While there was some severe flooding here in Morganton just around two miles from my house, overall, it was MILD around here. Once you drive a mere 20 miles up the road to a little town called Old Fort in McDowell County, and everything west from there, it is exponentially worse. Huge chunks of Asheville under water, Chimney Rock literally wiped off the map, Spruce Pine damn near wiped away, small towns with no communication to the outside world with people struggling. It is BAD here in Western NC, and it's going to take a LONG time for things to get back to some semblance of normal for ALOT of people.  I just felt the need to post and let anyone who might have noticed I was MIA that I am fine, but that alot of good people are not. Please keep western North Carolina in your thoughts and prayers, and if that's not your thing, drink one for all of us tonight. Here are a few links that I've shared over the last week on FB that show the devastation around here... https://fb.watch/v331QebVRJ/ https://www.facebook.com/100067755911039/videos/1069274148086583/ https://www.facebook.com/share/p/ER9b6tv8oj84QuWb/ https://www.facebook.com/share/p/9MpnKZUAx4m5oy3y/ All these aerial shots are from around 1-2 miles from my house: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/vux5WpAqeMDcNMhS/ https://fb.watch/v33x13dnTf/ https://www.facebook.com/share/p/V6RPz7HiiMhrBsfn/ https://www.facebook.com/share/p/vvEuMCm7We6fitZ9/ https://www.facebook.com/share/v/jE1utxkfNLeKEM9S/ Park Rangers in Chimney Rock managed to get the flag raised up again...
    • I've got a solid top 3 at this point.  At least for me, these 3 are heads and shoulders above everything else: 1.  Kissin' Dynamite 2.  Eclipse 3.  Maverick After that, it's really a hodgepodge of stuff.  New Roses, Daughtry (Only an EP but digging it), Collateral, Sebastian Bach, Judas Priest, Nestor, End Machine.  I'd probably put them in about that order at the moment.
    • So I was just looking at the new releases I bought from this year, and while there are some new additions to expand from the top 5 I posted earlier this year, to a top 10, all the stuff in my original list are still in the top 10 (although obvs with three months to go, the ones near the bottom could be usurped). Anyway as of now, this is where I am at: 1.       Judas Priest 2.       The Warning 3.       Nek! 4.       Rolling Quartz 5.       Band Maid 6.       April Art 7.       Lipz 8.       Sebastian Bach 9.       Mick Mars 10.   Durbin
    • I to used see them a few times at the Middle as well. With local chapter of the Hells Angels at front bar. Not much a Screaming Jets fan, so I didn't watch them with Gleeson' The guy in front now, was their recent drummer before they put out in front Those first five albums are classics
