Just finished Phantoms by Dean Koonts and now I am reading a Crichton book called Prey, which is starting of quite promising...

Btw: the Chelseae Handler book was a fast read, mildly entertaining nonsense stories similar to her tv show.

I recently started re-reading the entire Mack Bolan/Executioner series from the beginning. So far I'm up to book #17. I think I have about 200 books total but I've been trying to fill in gaps I've been missing in the series.

Nice! I used to have a pretty massive collection of those books myself (as well as the related series -- Phoenix Force, Able Team, Stony Man, etc.) -- got rid of'em a few years back (aside from a few personal favorites) when the wife and I had a yard sale. They were taking up too waaaayyyyy much room on our bookshelf

Do they still publish new ones? I used to see'em in the book department at K-Mart or Wal-Mart all the time and would still pick up new ones occasionally but now that I think about it I haven't run across any in quite some time.

I remember both of those series, I had a bunch of the "Destroyer" books too (they eventually adapted them into the movie "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins"), as well as stuff like Nick Carter: Killmaster (a way-cool ripoff of James Bond), the Death Merchant, the Specialist, etc., etc.

Yeah I remember Nick Carter and The Death Merchant...must of missed out on the Specialist as I don't recall that one....anyway I remember my mother finding a stack of these books in my room and being so outraged that she burned them....she was obviously concerned about how her little boy was being corrupted  ....of course there may have been one of two x-rated sex novels in there as well..

 The "Nick Carter" books had sex scenes in'em that were borderline porno... which is probably one of the reasons I read'em in the first place... sex and violence, baby, makes the world go round when you're a teenager... :bigboom:

I only read a couple of the "Death Merchant" series but I remember them being overly complicated to the point of being absolutely ridiculous. The guy who wrote them must've thought he was writing technical manuals or something, because virtually every sentence in each book had a notation at the end of it, which would direct you to a footnote at the bottom of the page explaining some kind of obscure military maneuver or the history of a particular weapon or part of the world or whatever... after a while I'd be like "yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever, I don't read these pulp novels to be educated, I wanna be entertained, so blow up some sh*t already" :rofl2:

I picked up my first Mack Bolan book when I was 14, been hooked since. I've never been able to get into the spinoff series with Able Team and Phoenix Force, but I do enjoy it when they occasionally team up in some of the Bolan books.

I had to laugh though, I had gotten through the first 10 or so books and Bolan had already been shot in the left arm 4 times and slept with 3 amazingly hot chicks that all happened to be 26 year old virgins. :rofl2:

And yes, they are still pumping out new Mack Bolan books to this day.

slightly off topic...just cuz a girl is of a certian age doesn't mean she can't be a virgin?

That's cool. I'll have to look out for'em next time I'm in the store. Is he still a 'Nam vet or have they "ret-conned" him (i.e. turned him into a Gulf War vet or someone similarly younger) by now? If they're still continuing with the original series timeline, ol' Mack's gotta be pushing 60 by now. Unless Stony Man scientists have come up with some kind of Super-Soldier formula to keep him young

Well you know in the original series he was a Vietnam vet and in one book (I think it was the San Francisco book) they say he's a vet of the Korean war also, but given his stated age in the book of about 30 he would have been about 10 years old while fighting in Korea! I know the guy is good but...

In the more recent books they have completely stopped mentioning him as being a Vietnam vet, they don't mention when or where he served, it's usually "military experience" or "combat experience" to order to obviously keep the guy of a certain workable age.

Never heard of this Mack Bolan dude, but he's appeared in over 600 novels apparently (according to wikipedia anyway). Don't think he's very big over here in the UK. He sounds awesome though! Like the bastard love child of Rambo, James Bond and Chuck Norris. :sm164:

It's a pretty addicting series if you like that kind of stuff. Plenty of action and usually good plots and strong story lines. The original series (through book 37 I think) had him fighting the Mafia, then he signed on as a limited partner with the U.S. government to fight terrorists and the KGB, and now as far as I know he's back out on his own and occasionally will do work for the U.S. government.

Yeah it's a great site! I've been looking up each book on that site before I start reading it just to get a feel for what to expect, good or bad.

McCammon is AWESOME!! "Boy's Life" is one of my alltime favorite reads. I have to replace my aged paperback copy cuz it's falling apart at the seams!

Hey Rick -- Inspired by our chat about Mack, I picked up my first Executioner novel in Lord knows how long (#376, "Frontier Fury") today at K-Mart. I plan to start it as soon as I'm done with Stephen King's "Under the Dome" (I'm about 700 pages and change into that 1000+ page behemoth!) cuz once I'm done with that epic, I'll need something quick and action packed as a chaser.

By the way, I found it odd that this K-Mart store stocks the Mack Bolan books in the same section as the Romance novels... (maybe that's why I hadn't seen any new ones in a while... I was looking in the wrong section!) Kind of an odd place to put them, even though Mack's publisher (Gold Eagle) is a subsidiary of the same company that publishes Harlequin Romances

Very cool! I just picked up one of the newer ones also in a used book store. I have no idea what number or even if it's in the series because there is no # on the book. I've been meaning to look it up on mackbolan.com but the book is at home and I keep forgetting the title! :anon:

And it seems to me when I was buying the books back in the late 80's I would always find them right by the romance novels as well in the Osco Drug I got them at. Odd, but you may be spot on with the Harlequin thoughts.

~Edit~ I guess the new one I picked up is a SuperBolan, #112 Force Lines. It's the first SuperBolan I've owned but the reviews are wayyy less than stellar. Still, it should be a interesting read.

I'm not not much of a reader so me reading a book is something that doesn't happen often. It isn't that have trouble reading but reading a book is much like work for me. I know people who can just skim pages and understand what they are reading. I have to read every word so if it takes someone 5 minutes to read a chapter it will take me 10 minutes. I know some "readers" can't understand that statement, I've dealt with it my whole life but most of the time reading isn't enjoyable for me. I've gotta to really concentrate on what I'm doing.

now that being said I've gotten the book FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS from the library this past week. I'm not a big fan of the movie, I think it is a great football movie but I think Remember The Titans is a better movie, if that makes sense to you. I just thought that FNL just didn't do anything to make me care about the characters in the movie. it wasn't till I listened to the dvd commentary that I found a new respect for the movie. reading the book is really worlds apart from the movie. you really get a more in-depth feel for the players, family and town. it wasn't till I heard in the commentary that I knew they take chartered jets to some away games but it is right there in the book. a lot of history too is presented in the book. so far I must say it is a really good read.

"With the Old Breed" by Eugene B. Sledge

This is one of the two books that the miniseries The Pacific is based on. This is highly regarded as one of the best if not the best WWII book ever written especially about the Pacific theater. After reading more than half of it so far I have to agree.
