What's a spinnin' in your CD player?

A Perfect Circle - Emotive, not a big fan of covers only albums and that's why I held off buying this for so long - but it's a nice surprise the APC take on songs rather than a simple re-hash.

Rush - Clockwork Angels - probably in a minority but I'm not sure about this yet - but the mix doesn't sound too great to me there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of dynamics it all seems like a wall of noise and mostly a one paced kind of affair. Neil Pearts drums sound like they are tiny (as in small not a typo of tinny) and his drumming itself a little uninspired, and everything else too bright and the guitar especially seems to lack any...hmm depth/bite.. something. Maybe it's my ears but it already sounds like it needs remastering to me. With regards the songs, they're okay, but I dunno I just feel over the last few albums (Counterparts onwards) they have lost the energy and inspiration they once had - there are the occasional flashes of brilliance that keep me buying their work - around 4 songs an album - but they're surrounded by too much material that sounds the same or lacks any character. Just my 10 cents.

I felt that way on the first spin but its better on the second spin. As usual there's a lot to digest with the music, lyrics and concept but im sure i will still need even more time with it.

I think you're probably right, some of the songs I love like The Wreckers and The Garden but some are passing me by, but still can't get my head into the sound. I bought another album recently Foxy Shazam's Welcome to the Church of Rock and Roll and while I love the album in parts it sounds overloud especially the bass spectrum it almost sounds like it's clipping. I don't usually run my hi fi with the tonal controls activated unless I'm playing stuff quietly at night and then I de-activate the tonal bypass (you mean you press a button Nick you buffoon...stop trying to sound techno!) and up the bass tone - but I had to with the Foxy just to reduce the bass and make it sound that bit clearer.

I think some mixing/mastering/recording is getting a little sloppy.

I agree. Depending what mood you're in it can also be ever so slightly boring and drags a little, but a massive surprise (I expected very little) and it delivered big-time...

Np:

A few new and awesome discs (apart from the Testament, which isn't quite as good as I'd hoped...)

TREMONTI - All I Was

TESTAMENT - Dark Roots of Earth

THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM - Handwritten
