Top-5 2018 (at the moment)

Recommended Posts

Well, this year is being much softer than last one IMO; not exactly a surprise as a lot of great bands did their releases in 2017 and it's too soon for the most part of them.

My top-5 currently:

1. W.E.T.

2. Shiraz Lane

3. No Sleep For Lucy

4. Ammunition

5. ReVertigo

Big deception: Kamelot

Very possibly Vega, Station, and Ted Poley+Degreed will mess all this. :headbanger:

Don't be shy and let me know yours!

because so far there's been hardly anything worth rating.

WET is miles ahead imo. Even Maverick is a distant 2nd.

But there are a few real tasty albums coming in the next couple of months....for me anyway

2. Self Deception     -    Self Deception

3. Grand Design     -    Viva La Paradise

4. W.E.T.     -    Earthrage

5. We Were Sharks     -    Lost Touch

EPs;

1. LeBrock     -    Real Thing

2. As We Once Were     -    Day in Day Out - EP

3. American Secrets     -    Wasn't Our Season

4. Summer Wars     -    Borrowed Time - EP

5. Caught In A Wave     -    High - EP

Looking forward to hearing ETF and Stone Broken (?) too, though.

For the record, not overly amped over anything in the albums list so far. Self Deception and We Were Sharks will probably be the highest rated of that lot by years end, but if any of them are in my top 10 I'll be pretty bummed.

If you don't know Self Deception, get this monster into ya;

And yep, LeBrock still devours anything released this year so far. Heads and shoulders above the rest of the pack.

just listened to No Sleep For Lucy. apprently I'm 6 years behind in respect of this band lol, but yeah that's pretty nice. Not as good as but similar to Destine.

contrary to what Geoff said if WET ends up outside of my top 10 it will have been a freaking amazing year. Basically I love the album. Everything I want from my melodic rock and I tend to agree with Dan that it might end up my favourite WET album.

was interested in that Self Deception so had a quick listen on Spotify. it's OK. but not really my thing if I'm honest. Far prefer No Sleep For Lucy

Also I just noticed you'e got Grand Design above WET lol. Man that Grand Design is terrible but to each their own ;)

But we wanna know how you rate what you've heard so far.

Pretty sure we had this exact conversation last year.

Absolutely worth a few early peeks at what people are liking after the first quarter.Love it and will be firing up a few I'd not come across shortly.

So far been pretty disappointing. Some big artists not delivering what I'd hoped for. Some gems out there though.

Not a top 5. Just the ones I've liked the most so far....

ITEM Album
Sharaz Lane Carnival Days
Dizzy Reed Rock N Roll Aint Easy
Marco Mendoza Viva La Rock
Ministry Amerikkkant
Firetiger Suggenly Heavenly

well I must have listened to over 20 albums this year and the only 3 I could recommend buying are these (in order)

1. WET

2. Maverick

3. No Sleep For Lucy

(Ammunition and Shiraz Lane are OK but I doubt they would be higher than 70%)

and in terms of EPs -

1. Lebrock

There have been some great songs from albums to be released from Vega, Gathering of Kings & Tremonti. I am also super excited by NFO due 28.06. So I hope to have something resembling a decent top 10 by end of June.

I have a feeling the second half of the year could be pretty good but depends on how many of these promised albums slip into 2019 - stuff like Creye, Work of Art, Defiants, Ted Poley, One Desire, Midnite City etc

Escape the fate is pretty decent , a lot less heavy than previous efforts I'd say but good stuff

Not sure that Stone Broken will do much for you tbh , very Nickelback, theory of a deadmen ish but I just love that sound

I liked 4 or 5 songs off that Self Deception album but a bit patchy for me

    • So finally got around to listening to the album (still waiting for CD to arrive but at least a digital version came with the order). This is defo the best album he has released since leaving Skid Row, and is better than anything released by his former band (even the Erik fronted album). I liked his solo stuff, but he was always trying too hard to be modern and heavy, so there were very few actual stand out tracks. On here though it really is more of a throwback. While not quite classic Skid Row, it is probably as close as we will ever get, kinda sitting somewhere sonically between the first two albums. The only downside for me is the fact there is only one ballad and it doesn't even come close to the two that featured on Angel Down. Seb took a long break between this and his previous album, and I think in that time he has taken time to reevaluate what he wants to do musically. As stated earlier, even the album cover is a throwback with it being a painting his father started decades ago. Hopefully any future releases will stick to this style, and not return to the style used on his last few albums.
    • Not sure, but sounds like christian lyrics to me. And could'nt find it on HH yet. 25 years ago I would have loved this, today I'm atheist and do not listen anymore to such... explicit lyrics.
    • Spider of Destiny-Frank Zappa
    • I got it for free when I bought the Dirty Americans album. It's a cool little sampler.
    • Ha, I remember them. Good stuff.
    • Better than I expected, honestly, as GUN was never my thing.
    • Agree. Have been a fan of Halestorm and Lzzy....she's fantastic. That said though, this Skid Row thing just feels "off" to me.  She sounds fine but I think it's simply that hearing a female voice do the songs just doesn't seem right after listening to the originals for so long.   I much prefer hearing Lzzy in Halestorm.  I'd rather see her concentrate on that and also concentrate on doing new music that's more in line with their first 2 albums!
    • From memory it was recorded after the original pledge release of Beautiful things and was added as a bonus song when it became available to the general public.
