Great thread (should be a poll though). Went through all the truly great albums I could think of and 1991, with 20 albums narrowly beat 1989 with 18. I may well have missed some and only included albums that for me are among the best ever, so some very good ones would have missed the cut.

Here's the 1991 list:

• Anacrusis - Manic Impressions

• Armored Saint - Symbol Of Salvation

• Bolt Thrower - War Master

• Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious

• Death - Human

• Entombed - Clandestine

• Enuff Z’nuff - Strength

• Massacre - From Beyond

• Metal Church - The Human Factor

• Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick

• Overkill - Horrorscope

• Paradise Lost - Gothic

• Pestilence - Testimony Of The Ancients

• Savatage - Streets

• Sepultura - Arise

• Skid Row - Slave To The Grind

• Tesla - Psychotic Supper

• Testament - Souls Of Black

• Vicious Rumors - Welcome To The Ball

• Warrior Soul - Drugs, God And The New Republic

And the runners-up from 1989:

• Axel Rudi Pell - Wild Obsession

• Blue Murder - S/T

• Bonfire - Point Blank

• Danger Danger - S/T

• Fates Warning Parallel Symmetry

• Lillian Axe - Love And War

• Lion - Trouble In Angel City

• McAuley Schenker Group - Save Yourself

• Metal Church - Blessing In Disguise

• Obituary - Slowly We Rot

• Pariah - Blaze Of Obscurity

• Pestilence - Consuming Impulse

• Sanctuary - The Mirror Black

• Sepultura - Beneath The Remains

• Shark Island - Law Of The Order

• Tesla - Great Radio Controversy

• Testament - Practice What You Preach

• Toxik - Think This

I'm actually going to do this properly one day like I've done with the last few years, hopefully rating all albums per year. Hard to make a guess but I'm 90% sure I'd probably go with 1989 for the sheer amount of all time faves. But I always said 1989-1991 was my favourite period, so I'd not rule out 1990 or 1991. Good times.

Yeah I'd have to say Im with you on that, but you cant overlook the fact that the last 2 or 3 years have not been that far off the quality we got from that period. I never thought that we would see so many excellent releases as we have in 2009/10/11/12......good times now too ;-)

Good shout on those 3! Gives even more weight to my 1989 argument.....I love all three.

Backed for sure. Sometimes I look at the ratings I've dropped on albums in the past couple of years and think to myself that these ratings wouldn't be far off a lot of classics from the late 80's and 90's. I think I made an awesome parallel between 1989-1991 and 2009-2011 in one of my awesome threads a while back. I forget what I was going on about, but I do recall that.

Yeah that, Vain's 'No Respect' and Treat's 'Organized Crime' are all in my top 5-10 albums of all time... I'm sure there'd maybe be another from 1989 too?

Yeah Geoff, you totally should. I have a documented list of my top 20 favorite albums from 1980 - 2011. Originally I thought 1989 or 1987 would be my favorite year, but once I organized my lists, it was clear to me that 1990 took the cake.

It's kinda hard to pick between 1987 - 1989 but 89 sounds very solid, although 87 is tempting because of Appetite For Destruction, Girls Girls Girls, Back For The Attack, Whitesnake 1987, and White Lion's Pride, but 1989 has more great albums i guess : AC - Trash, Bad English s/t, Badlands s/t, Bonfire Point Blank, CIB - Kicked and Klawed, D2, Dangerous Toys, Enuff Znuff, Extreme, Fifth Angel, FM, Giant LoTR, Icon, Junkyard, Lillian Axe, Mr.Big s/t, PBF Leather, Sepultura Beneath, Tesla TGRC, Vain, Tora Tora, oh well the list goes on and on

I am not even remotely knowledgable enough to begin to take a stab at this, though it's been a great read, so far.

And what about these bad boys also from 1989 -

After Hours - s/t

Babylon AD - s/t

Bang Tango - Psycho Cafe

Cry Wolf - s/t

LA Guns - Cocked & Loaded

Leatherwolf - Street Ready

Little Angels - Dont Prey For Me

Mastedon - Its A Jungle

Signal - Loud & Clear

Silent Rage - Dont Touch Me There

Each excellent in its own right.

This is gonna be more difficult than I thought!!

Nice memory jogger, this.

Forgot Bang Tango. Psycho Cafe would definitely be on my list. So would LA Guns, but it would be 'Hollywood Vampires', yet another 1991 album. 1991 rules!!! :D

Another album that came out in 1989, that is an absolute classic, but not HH material was Nine Inch Nails' Pretty Hate Machine.

Well, the the thread doesn't specify genre of music. Another reason I'm not gonna bother trying.

Honorable mention, then, to the immortal works of composers of 20th-century classical music such as Dmitri Shostakovitch, Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Béla Bartók, Sergei Rachmaninoff etc.
