My Little Pony KarpetRydOFunk Posted February 19, 2015 My Little Pony Report Share Posted February 19, 2015 So, I decided to chime in on the conversation. My list is severely lacking, and I know there are glaring omissions, but I simply have not had the luxury of growing up in this era. I've been trying to get caught up since I started listening to this music in 2005. My collection is centred more around '89-'94. I feel quite embarrassed sharing this list, but I'm excited to see what everyone else lists, and begin to discover the essentials. These are the albums from 1987 I have listened to enough times to feel comfortable listing as my favourites. Listed in alphabetic order (album title) as I cannot be bothered to rank them, with the exception of Lion's Dangerous Attraction. That's easily my favourite of the bunch. Michael Jackson - Bad Lion - Dangerous Attraction Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King Def Leppard - Hysteria Strangeways - Native Sons White Lion - Pride Triumph - Surveillance Petra - This Means War On to 1988. We should do this for every year.
DaHun72
I can't bring myself to rate CDs, especially ones I've lived with for so long. I've broken them up into 2 groups - Essential & Awesome. Listed in no particular order.... ESSENTIAL: Def Leppard - Hysteria - Huge, awesome…probably too huge and awesome as there were times I couldn't listen to this as it was played everywhere. Credit where credit is due this is a great album but I do prefer Pyromania a little more. Dokken - Back for the Attack - Dokken have a great discog in the 80s. I both love and loathe this CD as it's very samey. I even got rid of it a few times but never again. Massive riffage throughout and one of those CDs that blurs the lines of hard rock and metal. Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction - Brother bought it coz of Sweet Child but threw it my way a week later. Two years later it was his favourite CD. A real grower that took a long time to take off. Classic. Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King - The band at their metal best. Massive riffage, soaring vocals and a production that sounds like it was recorded in an old hall. Suites the music perfectly! White Lion - Pride - Let down a little by the production but what a fkn album. Heavy, lots of guitars, melodic. Some crazy great stuff on here and quite varied too! Whitesnake - 1987 - Pure class. Sykes and Coverdale make an amazing team. Both at their peak with something to prove. Probably seeing a pattern here….i like my hard rock on the heavier side. I think this is what turned me into a collector of music after having owned it for years on tape and LP I grabbed the CD when I saw it cheap and heard two additional songs. Absolutely classic! Awesome: Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation - A bit generic but there's no denying some awesome grooves on this e.g. Dude, Ragdoll etc. Don't play it much these days. Bonfire - Fire Works - Start hitting their straps and the precursor to their best album Point Blank. Dio - Dream Evil - Some classic tracks, big riffs and one of the best metal vocalists. Great White - Once Bitten - Worth it for the title track alone. Not overly bluesy like Twice Shy but also not heavy as the earlier stuff. Grim Reaper - Rock You to Hell - Love this band, big vocals and riffs. All a little bit silly but it's fun. High Tension - Masters Of Madness - I like me some German metal but not with the crappy German singers like Udo. Good band! Icon - An Even More Perfect Union - Not as good as the previous 2 and a band in transition after being dropped and some lineup changes. Fkn awesome for an indie! Leatherwolf - Leatherwolf (1987) - Love this band. Would hit their peak with the next album Street Ready! Loudness - Hurricane Eyes - Enjoy Japanese bands. Love the speed, energy and melody. Very good album with Soldier of Fortune being better IMO. John Norum - Total Control - Avoided this album for a long time until Europe stopped making good music. What a solo CD!!! Check it out as it's not your ordinary guitarists solo CD! Razormaid - First Cutt - One of those hard to find releases that's actually worthwhile. Blurs the line between hard rock and metal. Guitars are George Lynch inspired. Shok Paris - Steel and Starlight - Savatage like band. When US Power Metal is good it can be great! Better than the very good follow up Concrete Killers. Treat - Dreamhunter - Get everything by this band is you like catchy hard rock. Swedes do it best! Warlock - Triumph And Agony - Blistering guitars, catchy songs and melodies. Completely over the top as only the Germans can do it but this time it works. Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I - There's no denying the class that's all over this. I came to love it during the 90s as I was stuck in the hard rock in the 80s. Malice - License To Kill - Top notch for those that enjoy Vicious Rumours etc. Vicious Rumors - Digital Dictator - This is my favourite style of US power metal and a great time for these type of releases. Next album S/T was excellent also. Not sure if this is a 87 or 88 release. ESP - The Future Is Now - US styled power metal with twin leads. Recently reissued on CD (last year I think) - prior to that was only available on very limited vinyl. My joint top 3 would be Whitesnake, White Lion and Savatage. gener8tr
Def Leppard is the clear winner for me. I could talk about the awesomeness of this one all day, especially if I'm discussing it as though it was still 1987 and I was still 18 years old. Summer of '87 was one of the best three month stretches of my life (not just the Leppard disc). But I'll be damned if that Leatherwolf album isn't about as great a hard rock recording as ever laid to tape. Effing brilliant.
gener8tr
I'm an idiot... once again I left out one of the most important: WASP - Live In The Raw. Post-production futzing? Sure, but it's jus plain awesome anyway!
