The Obsession of Music

You know - I was thinking the other day back when I was about 20 I remember thinking that I pretty much had all the bands I wanted to be into down - Aerosmith, Starz, Godz, Angel, New England, Eagles, Zon, U.F.O. Rush e.t.c. and I'd probably start saving money as I wasn't going to be getting into any new bands - I'd only be buying stuff by the bands I really loved then, I had all I needed!

What went wrong????????????

My wife thinks I'm crazy! I am always about music! I you use to go up to her and say " I have something to tell you about me" and she'd have a look on her face as if to say oh shit, then I'd "say I love music!" And she'd say you're an asshole.

It's bad .... I'll be sat there with the missus enjoying an evening of wine, chilling and we'll be listening to something and I always end up saying something along the lines of "Did you know the guitarist in this band used to be in.........blah blah blah", just giving out a small nugget of musical info and she'll inevitably say " Stop it...I don't care!! I'm not Jez you know! "

She knows Jez and myself can talk about the minutae of music until the cows come home due to her experiences of varying degrees of boredom on the rare ocassions we get together. I think it's dead interesting but to her I'm just a jerk.

I'll be sat there with the missus enjoying an evening of wine, chilling and we'll be listening to something and I always end up saying something along the lines of "Did you know the guitarist in this band used to be in.........blah blah blah", just giving out a small nugget of musical info and she'll inevitably say " Stop it...I don't care!! "

 

My wife's the same way... I'll pull out some obscure nugget of trivia while we're watching TV or whatever and she'll just roll her eyes at me like "What-EVER, you geek."

 

Perfect example: my kids were watching some silly children's movie on Nickelodeon a while back and during the opening credits I noticed that the film's music was composed by Roddy Bottum. I sez "Oh wow, I know that guy! He used to play keyboards for Faith No More!" -- my wife looked at me and said "WHY DO YOU KNOW THESE THINGS?"

My wife hates the music that I like, probably she likes couple of songs, but mostly not, but she's pretty understanding to accept my obsession of this thing and occasionally willing to let her ears tortured in the car coz I spun some heavy music or burn some money to buy that stack of CDs

Just put my feet up and enjoy the music I already own for the rest of my life. What a shambles that became. I want to say I wish it was the case, especially for the sake of my wallet, but by jeebers there is still amazing music being made...

Must be a bloke thing, I do that too. I'm pretty good at recognising voices, so when there's a voice on an advert or animated film I often tell her who it is, expecting a reaction. She couldn't be less interested.

 

I have to keep reminding myself that my wife is never impressed by anything I do!

funny thing is that most of new music we buy or hear today are merely a mirror of the past, which is the 80s.

Granted there are few modern albums we have in mind, but I bet those top 10 were flooded with Frontiers/Escape/AOR Heaven/Roadrunner releases that's exactly the old styles

Like when Sebastian Bach was on Spongbob, the kids were watching it and I turned to the wife and said that's Sebastian Bach! she just looked at me for a few seconds, I said the singer for Skid Row and got NO response at all.

Someone on the Spongebob staff must be an '80s rock/metal fan, cuz in addition to Sebastian's voice gig there have been too many "metal moments" on that show for it to be coincidence.

 

...David Glen Eisley (Giuffria) provides Spongebob's singing voice during the show stopping "Sweet Victory" song in the "Band Geeks" episode.

 

...Dee Snider voiced "Angry Jack," the owner of the replacement snail-shell emporium.

 

...Gene Simmons played a sea monster that lived at the bottom of a trench, and Shannon Tweed was a fish lady who beat the crap out of Plankton when he talked smack to her and her kid

 

...and in the Spongebob Movie, not only is there a Motorhead song playing during a key scene ("You Better Run," changed to "You Better Swim") but the film's climactic musical number, "Goofy Goober Rock," is an obvious bite from Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock."

yeah,it never will,on top of the new bands that come along that I wanna check out I always see something on ebay or somewhere and go,ahh I remember these guys,usually a band that I never gave the time of day to back in the day, due in no small part to the large amount of new bands from that era (80's mostly) then when I hear em I cant believe I never gave em a chance.

Have to say that for my part some of them bands were the likes of Little Caesar or Shark Island debuts,albums that I now never stop listening after going back 4 or 5 years ago...oh the shame!!!

Yep. And Treat destroyed two years ago, and Electric Boys dropped what turned out to be my favourite album of 2011, and possibly the last ten years.
