Debating Def Leppard's "Pyromania"

Well, definitely the first option for me, although this is no metal CD. Rather Melodic Hardrock, imo.

'84/'85 saw some of the best ever hard rock albums released and this one is definitely near the top of the pile IMO.

I'm with ya, if the same question had been asked of Hysteria, my answer would have been different. But that is well documented in my previous posts so I will say no more about it.

No 'wimpiness' in Pyromania......not quite as powerful as High N Dry for me....but certainly not 'wimpy' pop rock!!

Okay, so I'm in the minority in this debate. I guess my irrational dislike of this album comes from my love of the "On Through the Night" and (especially) "High 'N' Dry" CDs. Those albums are classics in the NWOBHM genre. "Pyromania" on the other hand represents the watershed moment when Mutt Lang took over and began molding the Leps into a gooey pile of indistinguishable harmonies and softly distorted guitars.

 

Now, if the debate is who would you rather have in your band, Pete Willis and Steve Clark (RIP) or Phil Collen and Viv Campbell...well, is that even a debate? (Pete Willis is da man!)

Pyromania was and still is a GREAT album. One of the best of the Class of 1983 (which is one of the greatest years ever in my opinion).

 

Hysteria, on the other hand??? Well, I absolutely LOVED it back in the day, and don't get me wrong I still like it now... but Pyromania it ain't! Not close.

Nothing they ever did from Pyromania onwards compares to the first two albums.

I shall start again as I completely mis-read the album and thought it was about 'Hysteria'.

 

Right. 'Pyromania' - The best Def Leppard disc of them all (with High'n' Dry' right on it's heels) and definitely not a wimp out as may be suggested by some. Virtually every song on here is a winner, with 'Photograph' and 'Stagefright' being my top picks. Brilliant album end of story.

One of best albums of all time IMO Pyromania and High N Dry are equal in my book, I don't consider this disc wimpy at all...Die Hard The Hunter, Rock Til You Drop, Comin' Under Fire...wimpy, I think not.

I voted for the first option with great songwriting and great production.

Sure it had a few more hooks than High N Dry(which my fav Lep album) but it was still pretty similar to the previous 2 albums overall. Plus you had cool stuff like "Comin Under Fire", "Diehard the Hunter" and a few others.

Okay. I know when I've been beaten.

 

I will admit that my feelings about "Pyromania" are a bit harsh. Photograph and Stagefright really are good tunes (even in disagreement, Jez still has excellent taste), and the overall vibe is mostly decent hard rock.

 

I can only say that for me, the album was a big disappointment that I (apparently) never got over.

 

Perhaps therapy is in order...

I don't mind admitting that I liked Hysteria......over produced or not......the Lepps didn't lose me until Adrenalize which is a piece of aural shit....IMO....actually everything after Hysteria falls into that category.....

Since High N Dry and Pyromania are my Top 2 favorite albums of all time, nothing else will match up.

 

I say this because, while Hysteria does not compare favorably at all with either of these two albums, it is still an excellent album on its own. It is better than most rock or metal, without a doubt. It is better than probably 98-99% of the albums I have bought in my day.
