My son's Cub Scout pack went on its Spring Hike this past Saturday and I thought I'd share a few pix.

Fortunately the weather cooperated (just some light drizzle as we were getting started, which stopped after a few minutes). We hiked around the Monksville Reservoir in Ringwood, NJ, in case that means anything to anyone. :D Some highlights...

Don't back up too far, fellas...it's a loooooong way down.

Found this random lean-to at the top of the mountain. Either "Survivorman" or The Blair Witch lives here, we're not sure.

End of the line. Fat Ass Father got some much needed exercise, and Son earned his Hiking badge. All in all, a productive afternoon.

We noticed this weirdness on our way back to the parking lot... a very large tree growing out of a crack in an even larger rock.

 You Rock Freddy!! ANY involvement with your kids and their activities is good for the both of you. Especially getting involved in anything outdoors, away from the boob tube and game systems.

Glad you all had a good time. Looks like a beautiful area for camping and having fun!! camping.gif?t=1305587303

Unexpected Horror Movie Geek moment today. Took my kids to the local Boy Scout headquarters to pick up some supplies at the "Scout Store." They had a big display of vintage Scouting memorabilia in the front lobby and lo and behold, what do I find smack in the middle of it:

This is an actual "Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake" sign used in the original "Friday the 13th" movie, which was filmed at a real Boy Scout camp in Blairstown, NJ (Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco). How freakin COOL is that?

Excellent, very impressive

My son's Cub Scout pack had its year-end campout this past weekend. The first night (Friday) got washed out due to bad weather but we were able to come back on Saturday, set up, do all of our activities and sleep in our tents on Saturday night. Some highlights:

270428_2017466030272_1052500800_2421341_5150322_n.jpg

We managed to squeeze in the Fishing contest on Friday night before the skies opened up again and washed out our sleepover plans. My son didn't catch anything but then he'd never fished before, either.

Saturday afternoon we hiked to the top of Black Rock Mountain. The boys stopped at the summit for a group shot.

"Tent, sweet tent." Saturday night was the first time I'd slept in a tent in over a dozen years, and my son Matt had never slept in one at all. He slept great, but I woke up the next morning with muscle aches in places that I didn't even know I had muscles. Ouch.

What we have here is a swimming pool in the rocks at the beach. On the right hand side there is just part of the path around the pool, and a grassy area alongside the path for party animals. :)

Nah mate, just a public swimming pool at the beach - it's the council's worry. I don't know if it's common elsewhere, it's just how we roll at our beaches here in Australia, but most beaches have a public rockpool. Might be different in the world, though? :)

Your cat is really cute. It looks a lot like my cat, Edan, who I had to put to sleep last Friday morning. You become attached to pets...huh...? Every morning I still go right to the pantry to get food to feed Edan.

Take care of that little kittie.

Can't speak for EastCoast, but only the "elite" roll like that here, our public parks and beaches are more functional than fancy...

Then again in Washington State 70 degrees is shorts and tube top weather. :) Otherwise we don't tan we mold or as many find humorous we rust.

Yeah, he's a good little kitty, and I appreciate every day he's around to throw his paws in our faces as we sleep. We got him in 2003 when he was brought into my wife's work (she's a vet nurse) after being hit by a car, or attacked or something. No one knows, but he was in bad shape. A few tests also found he had a heart condition. At the time my wife asked if we could take him in. She let me know about his condition and that he'd need 2 tablets every day for the rest of his life and wasn't likely to make it more than 2 or 3 more years because of his heart. I knew it'd crush me, but my wife had become so attached to him at work. I remember the first day going in to see him, and he was still so battered. Very sad. :( And he was so nervous and scared of anything and anyone. Still is to this day to a degree. Not sure he ever got over whatever happened to him completely.

It's actually kind of cool because it's like my wife and I are the only two people in the world he fully trusts, which is friendly. He's okay around my parents and family and friends, but he's still so shy and usually hides away. So he's just like our own little private kitty. :)

Anyway, getting carried away, but 8 years later (and we still have no idea how old he is - he still looks identical [minus the wounds] to the day we got him!!) and he's still around, being as cheeky as he can. Taking swipes at the pups everytime they pass, snuggling up on our pillows and in our faces overnight... pawing at us if he feels like it. Yeah, he's a good little kitty.

Crazy. The kids and parents alike love those pools for a safe place to swim at the beach... plus they make for a great place to take a snap from if you're up at sunrise. :)

Bumpity bump...

It's Halloween season and the kids are getting into the spirit already (as usual)... they're going to be the Mario Brothers this year, and tried on their costumes yesterday. If I do say so myself (of course I'm slightly biased) I think they look awesome. :D

Also, the boys were checking out Halloween supplies at our local Walgreens' store over the weekend and narrowly escaped a run-in with a certain Mr. Voorhees...mwahahahahahaha

Thanks mate, appreciate it. I would love nothing more than to say goodbye and f*ck you to my current place of business and make money doing something I love, but it ain't easy. Like any market involving something fun being passed off as a job, it's a hard one to crack. And I wouldn't even know where to start. I just love still learning, though, and doing it for the love of the sport keeps me happy for now. :)

My Grandkids are living with us for a while. Both the boys want those costumes!! Where did you get them. Is everything their wearing included?

Cool, man! We got the Mario Bros. costumes at Wal-Mart last weekend. The outfit includes the hat, the body suit, and a stick-on mustache. They were $20 each.

My boys have been talking about going as Mario & Luigi for Halloween for months 'n' months now so I was glad they were so easy to find (and relatively cheap). I mean, they started telling me "We wanna be Mario Brothers for Halloween!" back in like March or April of this year. Haha. When we found these costumes in the store I had to make sure, I sez to 'em "Are you SURE this is what you wanna do for Halloween? Cuz once we buy these, there is no changing your mind," and they were like "YES YES YES!" Haha.

This'll probably be the last Halloween where we can get 'em to wear "matching" costumes (last year they were Scooby Doo and Shaggy, and the year before they were both pirates)... my older boy will be 10 years old next year and I'm sure by then he'll be too "cool" for it and he'll want to do his own thing. :D

Geoff your pics are always so professional looking. Have you ever considered making money doing it?

Thanks mate, appreciate it. I would love nothing more than to say goodbye and f*ck you to my current place of business and make money doing something I love, but it ain't easy. Like any market involving something fun being passed off as a job, it's a hard one to crack. And I wouldn't even know where to start. I just love still learning, though, and doing it for the love of the sport keeps me happy for now. :)

I want to say "holy fuckin' shit Geoff those pictures are fucking fantastic!!!", but I'll restrain myself and say wow, nice pics dude! Seriously, you need to consider a job pertaining to the field of professional photography sir. Fantastic pics!

Thanks mate, appreciated. As I say, always learning and I'm even happier with my more recent efforts. Maybe one day... I hope. :)

    • Lots of positive reviews coming out Pearcy’s performance at this years M3 festival in Maryland.    Vocals: Stephen Pearcy  Drums: Blas Elias Lead Guitar: Johnny Monaco Guitar: Erik Ferentinos Bass: Matt Thorne
    • I hate that Collective Soul is considered alternate. When they were popular they were promoted as active rock, which I'm not sure what that is but it sounds a lot closer what they do than alternate rock. To me, alternative is REM and Pavement and the like.
    • The reason I mentioned Alter Bridge and Scott Stapp's solo stuff is because I don't think it's too far off from Creed. Myles Kennedy obviously has a more dynamic voice than Stapp but musically they're very similar. At the end of the day as I've said I love this site and if Dan decided to strip it down to the bare bones and build a site from the ground up starting with Journey and Poison and I would still support it.
    • I get the idea of keeping the site pure but if you look at the genres of music on HH listed on the site not even all of them fit into the AOR/Melodic Rock sub genres and if you submit a cd there's even more categories. If the site was strictly AOR & Melodic Rock it would still be an amazing database but it's also, sleaze, glam, southern rock, blues rock, hard rock and modern hard rock and there's a lot more to those genres to explore.
    • My two cents... This site's database was probably the single biggest factor in me getting into the AOR/melodic rock subgenre, and I was like a kid in a candy shop for a while because I knew *almost* every artist on here would appeal to me and fit what I was looking for. Finding new music you enjoy is one of life's greatest pleasures and for a while this site was my go-to. I'll always be grateful to Dan and the rest of the contributors for that. That being said, I worry that it will lose a lot of that appeal if it just starts adding a bunch of artists that play rock music but do not fit in the AOR/melodic rock subgenre. There are a few bands on here that are already pushing it and if every artist with two guitars and a big snare drum gets admitted, what's separating this database from any other? We are all fans of a type of music that is quite "niche" these days but that's what makes the site special. tl;dr I vote no on all of them. I vote no on Creed twice.
    • There is always gonna be a fine line between what is an is not gonna cut the mustard on here. As I said before, Cornell is an amazing singer and the stuff he did with Audioslave was certainly deserving of a place on the site as there was so much 70s hard rock/metal to their sound. But Soundgarden certainly does not fit beyond a few songs here and there. And his solo stuff is all over the place genre wise. His James Bond theme, you know my name is one of my favourite hard rock songs of all time and if he had released a whole album in that style, I would whole heartedly support that being on the site, but as much as I really like his Carry on album, it just does not belong here. And I would be really against stuff like Pearl Jam and Creed not because I flat out hate them, but just because I don't think they really fit. There are bands I love I would not want on here, and there are bands I hate who I fully support them being on here (The Darkness for example). The other thing to consider, as it was mentioned by someone, it does not matter if certain members of a band have albums on here, that does not mean there other bands belong on here. Audioslave yes, Soundgarden and RATM, no. Scott Stapp (can't really comment) but Creed, no. Mother Love Bone, yes. Pearl Jam, no. And with some of the other bands mentioned, like The Cars. It's a slippery slope, as where do you stop? Should Dire Straits be on here? Bruce Springsteen? Huey Lewis? Mellencamp? All artists I really like, but don't think they have a place.
    • Really looking forward to a couple of upcoming releases as well. Maverick is sounding promising, and most hyped for The Warning as all singles released from that so far have been top notch. Plus there is the new Rolling Quartz EP on the horizon.
    • While I enjoy listening to some of those bands, I'd vote no on including any in the HH main database.  Especially the ones I'd classify as grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Mudhoney) or alternative rock (Live and Collective Soul) as for me those are the antithesis of what I consider a HH artist to be.
