Didn't know Wraith but saw the comparison with Ratt, funny enough: googled ''Wraith Revelation'' and the guitarist wears a Ratt t-shirt in the band picture :D But other than that no connection between the two bands, right?
Just thought it was funny because you said they sounded like Ratt, will have to check em out but underneath one of the pictures it said something about ''NWOBH''......

Wraith have been around (in various incarnations) as long as... well, almost as long as Ratt, lol. The band I knew (around 1990) was pretty solid but not amazing metal. I'm sure at one point they were NWOBH too. But they've been around so long I'm sure they've tried everything. They hit the nail on the head this time, though. Even if it took them 30-40 years. ;)

No particular order, and excluding EP's:

Midnite City - S/T

Pretty Boy Floyd - Public enemies

Santa Cruz - Bad blood rising

Alice Cooper - Paranomal

H.E.A.T. - Into the great unknown

Falling Red - Lost souls

Adrenaline Mob - We the people

L.A. Guns - The missing peace

Tragedy - The joy of sex

Stone Trigger - Ghost

There was a whole bunch of other great albums, but most of them either did not quite live up to my expectations or just did not hook me like they should have.

Honourable mentions: Hell in the club, Wayward sons, Hells addiction & Tales from the porn.

Biggest disappointment (although I did like it, it was just not as good as anything they have done before) Steel Panther

Good mentions. Wraith will definitely be in my top 10, and Bloody Heels will not be far off. I've been a bit out of the forum scene this year, but I feel like these two have been a little under-rated. Two fantastic albums.

As a fan of 80's commercial hard rock, Bloody Heels is like a lost Silent Rage album, and Wraith is like a more metal version of Ratt... so damn good.

Both of those CD's blew me away. First the Bloody Heels: Wow some kids from Latvia with awesome production and songs from the late 80's/early 90's. Just fuckin' great. Then at the end of summer this other group I never heard of, Wraith also comes out of no where and delivers something awesome with typical hard rock from the 80's sounding kind of like RATT.

Those are the kind of surprises I'm always looking for.

listened to Bloody Heels today but I struggled with it. it's the sound I like but the songs were oddly arranged and some of the lyrics didn't seem to fit the song structure.

Okay, am very late to the party. Infact I gave NFO's Amber Galactic a listen just a couple of days back after the song Gemini had blown me away. And even though am not a fan of 70s music era or anything that sounds like it but I must admit NFO is damn good. Musicianship is top-notch. Songs are very catchy. I gave this album a miss when it came out as I read in a thread that they sounded similar to Cats in Space (Mr. Heartache was the only song I liked off their debut but the rest did nothing). But to my surprise, am really enjoying this album. Gemini, Josephine, Jennie, Something Mysterious etc - so many good songs! I think this is their best release yet. And it's awesome.

I Thought Crazy Lixx's Ruff Justice would be in everyone's top 5. The album is flawless with all killer tunes.

Interesting list. Unfortunately I didn't (and won't) even bother with 3 from your list, including the top two, lol.

But some good interesting stuff there. A few of the things that just stand out personally for me;

Surprised by the position of Revolution Saints. Unfortunately I was really quite underwhelmed by this one. Past 60 in my list at the moment. :(

Boulevard - I do get it because I know you're a super fan, but if I was underwhelmed by RS, I was very underwhelmed by this. But yeah, I do get it based on your commentary on this band on the forum.

Brother Firetribe - I'd find it interesting it was so high up in your list... but instead I just find i insulting that it's before Midnite City, lol. ;) To each their own, but production and vocals aside, to me one of those albums showcases the almost the most blandly written collection of songs in 2017. The other features the most exciting (even if not the most original).

But cool list, thanks for the read.

10. Brother Firetribe

Mine is definitive, no changes.

just on your points.

1. NFO - this is just a slice of genius imo. the songs, lyrics, flow (with the French interludes), just magnificent. but I totally get you need to be a fan. I tell you what though they have garnered huge support online with this album. loads in the mafia group with it in the top 10 and a few with it at No 1. big Euro tour too. a real success story :)

2. Threshold - just majestic prog. but there's always a central themed chorus to every song. melodies, harmonies, solos sent from heaven. And back to Mac era quality after a couple of hit and miss albums.

3. Rev Saints - surprised me too. but I returned to it on my re-listens and I realised that it is basically 7 flat out melodic killer rockers and 2 dreamy ballads. DA is on fire as well. every solo just rocks. yeah massive and could even be higher. I just love it. HUGE step up.

4. Boulevard - it's my go to chill album and thats why its so high. just played it loads of times. classy.

5. Brother Firetribe - bland? a couple maybe but mostly it's big bombastic AOR! They were great live as well which I think helped to elevate my enjoyment of this album. and most importantly it's varied..............which is why I rated it higher than -

6. Midnite City - I really like this album, I do. hence why it's in my top 20 (i listened to over 75 albums this year and some great ones didnt make it)....BUT. yes production is flat, songs are wayyy too samey for my liking and it's just not as memorable as some others  (still struggle to recall any songs off it).

so there u go.

all good though (I mean Midnite City is an easy 80%) and a great year in rock

:)

great!! love it that u gave NFO a chance and really liked. its a super cool album and i agree their best (even though i do live the debut this is more melodic).

Crazy Lixx is awesome. to be honest any of the top 10 could change places on any given day. I've just played the ones above a few more times.

I REALLY struggled this year to separate these releases.

Thanks mate. I know Wildness and I like it a lot. Their track 'Collide' was one of my candidates in the thread for the 2017 Track List. Any other year very possibly would have been in my Top 10, but this year is merciless.

ok so I listened to Code Red. Nice but very safe melodic rock.

what puts me off this is that the rhythm guitar is virtually mixed out of the sound. non existent. compared to say Eclipse which is pure guitar driven and to the fore.

just a bit safe for me.

In it's defence it does grow a bit. I'd still tend to agree with you more than saying it's anything special, but I have noticed a few times as the album gets repeat spins that I've found myself glancing down at the Ipod to see who is responsible for this very nice song I am unfamiliar with. So it hasn't stood out for me, but the songs appear to sink in well with a few spins.

    • Press release: Esoteric Recordings and Cherry Red are absolutely delighted to announce the signing of the much loved and highly regarded CATS in SPACE. Fantastically received by media and fans, and one of the front runners in the current UK rock scene, the band are currently recording a new studio album to be released on the Esoteric Antenna label in November 2024. There are also plans to re-release and rework the band’s back catalogue both physically and digitally. Formed in 2015 by Greg Hart and Steevi Bacon, the band has garnered significant attention within the rock press since ‘landing.’ Drawing inspiration from ‘70s rock, their sound echoes the likes of Queen, Styx, ELO, and Boston; loud guitars, huge drums, soaring multi-layered vocal harmonies and singable choruses. Moreover, the band have a compelling live show and a plethora of “purr-fect” merchandise. Members have performed with the likes of T’Pau, Ian Gillan, Asia, Mike Oldfield and Robin Trower. Lead vocalist Damien Edwards was Parson Nathaniel in Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds and also played Roy Orbison in Only The Lonely – The Roy Orbison Story. The band have toured with Deep Purple, Status Quo and Thunder and were guest artists to Bonnie Tyler at her sold-out London Palladium in 2019. Greg Hart says: “Since the formation of CATS in SPACE in 2014, the long-term plan, when the time was right, was always to sign our own label and catalogue to a company that could take our music further in every direction, whilst fully embracing that we are not a heritage act but very much a going concern releasing new albums. The team at Cherry Red specialise in being a good ’old school style label’ who take pride in physical product and have fantastic business in Europe, which we badly needed to explore. The list of classic bands on the roster speaks for itself, so to join the team was a very easy decision for us to make. We are super excited to be joining the ’Cherry Red Army’!”
    • Todd is a legend ! Just added up his solo and Utopia CDs that I have of his and came up with 25. And I still have a couple of his LP's as well
    • Ya I know but it's there no big right? Didn't notice....
    • New album coming later this year.
    • I had the need to go to Bloomington, IL, about an hour west of me, so this time instead of just thrift stores in that town, in the wake of the JL Records trip I figured I would check and see if there were still any dedicated "record stores" there. The last time I went CD-hunting in Bloomington was almost 25 years ago. Since pawn shops stopped carrying CDs, and I only got into thrifting since I retired, for the last 20 years or so almost everything I buy has been online in one form or another. I always forget that college towns *can* be good sources of CDs, but it's soo damned inconsistent. West Lafayette (where JL Records is located) is the home of Purdue University (39,000 students), and Bloomington, IL is the home of Illinois State University (21,000 students). Why do I always forget about this?... because I live in the town with the main campus of the University of Illinois (44,000 students... bigger than either of those)... and it has NOT A SINGLE FUCKING MUSIC STORE on campus. There's only one, way off campus, and it's absolutely pathetic. It's basically a 100,000 population community with ZERO music stores. So I've gotten away from thinking about those opportunities for CD hunting... which as it turns out, has been a major mistake on my part. There are two record/CD stores on the ISU campus in Bloomington, located 2 doors apart on the same street! They both opened 20 years ago this year (after I had stopped my regular CD hunting trips to Bloomington). I wondered if, given the timing, they were both owned by the same party, but no they are competition, but friendly competition. Each owner spoke positively of the other and recommended I visit their counterpart. The two stores are North Street Records and Waiting Room Records. They are very similar to one another, and yet extremely different from JL Records from my last trip. Whereas JL was 80% CDs and 20% vinyl, both of these stores are the exact opposite. JL stocked a lot of current releases in our euro-centric genres, whereas these two stores are more what you would expect: rock = "classic rock", with very little in the way of import releases from the labels we know. That said, both stores had dedicated "heavy metal" sections, although primarily focused on death metal and thrash, as opposed to melodic, power, or prog metal. There were some interesting items of note in their used sections. Where JL typically priced things closer to full retail (used CDs $10-15, new CDs $16-25), these stores made up for their lack of variety compared to JL, in lower price points: used CDs $4-10, new CDs ($10-16). I didn't have time to take pics of the stores themselves this time out, as I was a bit rushed, but I plan to make a return trip at a more leisurely pace (although it's always going to be a PITA, as the campus parking enforcement rigorously enforces the 1-hour parking time limit or you get a $20 ticket, so moving your car every hour sucks). So going over my store-specific impressions and acquisitions... outside of a few music blu-rays for my collection, everything I picked up was for resale on eBay; stuff that I thought had enough room to justify picking up. First Waiting Room Records. This store was the larger of the two, more brightly lit, spacious, and appeared to cater more to the artsy-fartsy clientele. More of an emphasis on jazz and world music. Vintage audio equipment for sale in various places. This store had several boxes of $1 CDs (6 for $5, 13 for $10) as well as a box on the sidewalk outside the door of free cds. I availed myself of both, this cheap stuff just more out of curiosity and experimentation than anything in my wheelhouse. Lots of CD singles and radio station promos. The vast majority of what I bought here were actually bootlegs. A local collector who was getting out of physical media had sold a spate of Russian 2-on-1 boots. These were very common on eBay in the 2000-2010 period, but have dried up since then. Only really of interest to diehard completists, but depending on the artist, they can sell for fairly big bucks. As I typically do, prior to purchase I asked "any discounts for larger purchases?" I learned early on that while discounting varies greatly from store to store, if you don't ask you don't always get... so I unashamedly always ask. In this case it amounted to 10% off, which basically covered the sales tax... better than nothing.           Assassinator is a local metal band, found zero examples listed on eBay     And the carton of $1 and free CDs.   Now we move on to North Street Records. Smaller location, more dimly lit, but more my speed. Proprietor looked like he stepped out out of Duck Dynasty... a bit reserved initially, but opened up as the visit progressed. Stuff was stacked EVERYWHERE. I know I missed things, so I know I will go back to look at things more thoroughly. More rock-focused than the other store. Lots of Mobile Fidelity vinyl releases brand new, quite a large selection of CD box sets. No $1 CDs like the other place, but the pricing was better to begin with, and the discount he offered at the end was better. What caught my eye was a whole run of 13 Todd Rundgren and Utopia albums. Not inherently HH fodder per se, although certain songs definitely could fit... the material is all over the map stylistically, from pop to rock to experimental and DEVO-esque. Historically, the Utopia releases resonated with me more so than his solo efforts. These, however, were all Japanese vinyl-sleeve replica releases from 2008, part of the limited edition 80th anniversary reissue series. Looking them up online on both eBay and Discogs reveals that they are in very short supply and some of them can sell for above $50 each. They were stickered EXTREMELY reasonably to begin with at $10 each. When I checked out, he basically offered that if I bought those 13 as marked, he would knock off most of the sales tax and the other titles I had pulled would be free. I couldn't argue, as that worked out to approximately 25% off. Not to mention that his marked price on the still-sealed Dream Theater Luna Park 3CD + blu-ray set was dirt cheap to begin with. All in all, at was a great trip, and now a more semi-local source to shop at periodically.
    • Hi, I am looking for a hard copy of this. If anyone can help, Please let me know.   Thanks,   Rick
    • New song 'Freefall' taken from the album 'Hypnotized' out July 12 through Frontiers. Tracklisting; 1. Freefall 2. Taste Of Heaven 3. Search For More 4. My Voice For You 5. Against The Wind 6. Our Time Is Now 7. Hypnotized 8. Tonight 9. A Time Around Us 10. Runnin’ Out Of Time II 11. Different Me Outside
    • The definitely do put some nice effort into their videos. Yeah, that release date feels like it was a little farther out than necessary.  I feel like early June probably would've been fine to still allow plenty of promotion time and a few singles/videos. I guess I get it though.  It seems like albums die and get forgotten pretty quickly these days so the best way to give it legs is probably doing a slow burn with getting songs out there before ultimately releasing the album.
