Stryper - No More Hell To Pay

Finally got mine. Not a single filler! Dare I say, it's more metal than hard rock. Their best album since THWTD.

Agreed. This is a METAL disc. Those riffs by Oz Fox are spectacular. Like Michael Sweet said, this is the album that should've followed THWTD instead of the whimpy IGWT.

You and I rarely agree (and that's ok) so I'm going to have to say I love IGWT. Also, most people don't realize this but most of the killer guitar playing comes from Michael. He and Oz sound great together though. I'm freaking thrilled with this album.

 

We do agree though, it's metal!!! \m/

 

I think we agree more than you think. And for the record, I wasn't dissing IGWT. I liked it but thought it needed more balls. It was a bit generic.

Been listening to this today. Some great songs and fantastic guitar solos. There are a few fillers for me though, and it's a real shame about the preaching. But overall, by far the best I've heard by Stryper.

Haha, just reading James' comment - and what I always hate about christian discs - and then yours, maybe you're the lucky one. You get to enjoy the disc without hearing the painful christian lyrics. Which, like I said, aren't too bad on this disc, thankfully. Ugly in places, but I have heard worse.

That's very interesting. I can't for the life of me recall what Reborn was like, but Murder By Pride definitely had some great tunes. That one, however, had to grow on me. No More Hell to Pay was the first Stryper album to really grab me by the balls right off those first chords.

Murder by pride was well average. A few good songs. The new album is miles better imo and the only Stryper album I really like.

Okay, yeah, that one did do much for me at first, and it's still not a track I'd listen to on its own, but it fits nicely with the rest of the album. But as far as covers go, it'll never be "Shining Star."

Nah its not the worst song on the album. The One is. I normally love Stryper ballads, but this one is awful.

Nah its not the worst song on the album. The One is. I normally love Stryper ballads, but this one is awful.

Ha ha think thats a pretty lonely opinion mate ;-) but im glad you like that album.

 

As for 'The One' - I wasnt too keen on that one either but it has grown on me. Marching into darkness is probably the weakest track but virtually every other song is excellent imo - which for a stryper album is....well a revelation ;-)

Been listening to this one today, and there are some great tunes. Good album, but quite a few weaker tracks for me. 'Marching Into Battle' and 'Sympathy' are average, while ; 'Te Amo', 'Sticks & Stones' and 'Water Into Wine' are poor imo, especially the latter. The first two tracks are absolute belters though, and overall a pretty decent album.

Iron Maiden and other metal bands also quoted many passages from bible, like 'Number of The Beast' from Revelation.

 

What I'm intrigued is many people do really hate Christian-lyrics songs but don't mind Satanic-lyric songs. I don't mind both as long as the music is good.

I mean, it's a yin and yang, dark and light, so people ideally should be balance by hating Satanic as much as Christian, but in the metal scene, it didn't happen, and that's why bands like GHOST B.C are selling much more than STRYPER. It's like being fans of Satanic is much more cooler than Christian, why is that

I think the main reason is that nobody here actually listens to satanic bands, and by that I mean artists that are actually satanic, preaching about satanism.

When bands like Maiden or Slayer etc sing songs about Satan or hell, its generally theatrical, and is rarely saying "Satan is wonderful".

Satanic imagery has been a part of metal since it began, as lets face it, its cooler.

As for christianity, I guess its because christian bands ARE preaching, and if you are a confirmed atheist, it will always annoy you somewhat.

To me, as an atheist, it makes me cringe sometimes how bad and sappy the lyrics can be, but it does not stop me enjoying them.

That said, generally the songs and albums by Stryper that I like best are the least preachy ones, but I think this is probably coincidental as the songs on those albums are just out and out great songs, religious or not.

 

I think another thing that annoys people with Christianity over Satanism is the fact that a lot of Christians judge people who are not Christians, where as Satanists just get on with their own shit.

Personally I think all of its rubbish, which is why singing about God for me is no different to singing a song about a dragon, Micky Mouse or Superman. But hey, to each their own.

Such a great album! I noticed a few people here and there who list 'Marching...' as a weak track. Why? It is one of the highlights for me! Heavy and grooving riff, it just rolls over you, has an awesome duelling solo and ends with Michael going absolutely Halford on everyones asses So what it doesn't have a hook, it has a sledgehammer, that works fine for me thank you very much!

 

The only song I don't like so much is 'Sticks and Stones', can't really say why but I wouldn't have missed it if it wasn't there... 'Jesus is just alright' has some overtly christian lyrics that are a bit hard to swallow, but it is a catchy tune. Overall their best after Against the Law.

 

Oh and I like Murder by Pride too. A little uneven, but some good tracks.

Put this on again a few days ago, and still have found nothing on it thats that catchy for me. It sounds good overall, but nothing amazing for me.

Still take MBP and Reborn over this.

Shame really as Stryper has been one of my go to bands since their reunion as all their stuff has been pretty damn good. This one though, just something about it doesnt grab me.
