Chronicle

This one is still so good. And the closest thing we'll get to a live-action Akira. Highly recommended.

28 Days Later

It had been way too long since I'd seen this. One of the best films of the genre.

Mimic & Tremors....a couple of very good films...

I love "Mimic"... I'm surprised that it isn't more highly regarded by horror fans, esp. since Guillermo del Toro is a much bigger deal nowadays ("Mimic" was his first English language movie).

Pretty much every single one of del Toro's trademarks (religious symbolism, dark and creepy tunnels, kids in peril, bugs/things with claws and lots of legs, etc.) can all be found in "Mimic."

...and Mira Sorvino is freakin hot. Even after she spends half the movie crawling around in abandoned subway tunnels and she's covered in mud, slime and bug parts. :rofl2:

The Stuff (1985)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cADzGsrXxs

America's gone crazy for a new no-fat, no-calorie, great tasting yogurt like dessert product called "The Stuff" -- but as a private investigator soon finds out, the tasty goo is actually a highly addictive, mind controlling parasitic organism. Don'cha hate when that happens?

This goofy horror comedy (written and directed by Larry "It's Alive" Cohen) creeped me out when I was a kid, but this bizarre mix of "Blob" style creature feature and consumerism satire hasn't aged very well at all.

Nazis at the Center of the Earth (2012)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QrQ8vMoeow

The Asylum jumps on the "Nazi-sploitation" genre (see also: Dead Snow, Iron Sky) with this low budget little sickie. The members of an Antarctic research team are captured by a squadron of Nazis who live in a secret base deep beneath the ice. The Nazis are led by Dr. Josef Mengele, who needs the newcomers for spare parts not only to prolong his own life and the lives of his men, but also to complete his Robo-Hitler.

...yeah, you read that right. And it only gets MORE insane from there.

Ridiculous plot, hilariously cheap special effects and some truly sick gore equals perfect Schlock-Tober entertainment.

Mars Attacks! (1996)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC5O9NFWZCs

Earth is panic stricken when bug-eyed, big-brained, hostile Martians invade and lots of cartoonish mayhem follows.

Tim Burton's kitschy-on-purpose salute to '50s alien-invasion flicks (based on the classic trading card series from TOPPS) features an all star cast including Jack Nicholson (in a dual role), Pierce Brosnan, Glenn Close, Gentleman Jim Brown, Annette Bening and Rod Steiger (to name just a few).

Nothing spectacular but good, goofy fun.

Halloween Night (2006)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCJSJCtfBKw

A psycho escapes from the mental hospital on Halloween night and returns to his home town to continue his killing spree.

...gee, where have we heard that plot line before?

This utterly shit house slasher movie was The Asylum's attempt to bite off of Rob Zombie's "Halloween," in case it wasn't painfully obvious. As usual for an Asylum production, the story is non-existent, the acting sucks and the characters are all idiots who deserve everything they get.

On the other hand, this flick has an absurdly high body count, lots of gore, and even some totally gratuitous girl-on-girl action.

Make no mistake, this movie sucked, but at least it was better than the last couple of real "Halloween" sequels.

Tremors III: Back to Perfection (2001)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8w7rGb8VGc

Michael ("Family Ties") Gross returns for a third go-round as survivalist Burt Gummer, back in action against another outbreak of those pesky Graboids around his desert home town. As viewers of the "Tremors" flicks know, the critters have an annoying habit of mutating into new forms each time they reappear, so this time out Burt and his neighbors have to deal with flying Graboids (!!) which they dub "ass-blasters." (When my kids heard that, they laughed till they nearly pee'd.)

Hilarious action packed monster mashing fun for the whole family!!

Caught that CBGB and even though I am not fluent in that scene and I have read that there are timeline discrepencies I thought it was a good film. Interesting life that guy Hilly must have lived.

I enjoyed it too, despite the ham-handed treatment given to the Ramones in that flick. (They're auditioning for Hilly Kristal in 1974, but they play... "I'll Get Knocked Down But I'll Get Up," a Joey Ramone solo track that wasn't even written till the late 90s??)... I knew going in that it was not going to be an accurate documentary style flick...

Last night's viewings: two seasonally appropriate documentaries: "NIghtmares in Red, White and Blue" and "American Grindhouse"

"Nightmares" traces the history of American horror films from the silent era to the present, while "Grindhouse" explores the seamy independent sex-n-violence film industry from the 30s through the 70s. Both were packed with tons of clips from classic (and not-so-classic) films and commentaries from luminaries like Larry "It's Alive" Cohen, John "Halloween" Carpenter, Joe "Gremlins" Dante, Roger Corman, and many more. Educational and entertaining!!!

    • I was a pretty big fan. Nature Of The Beast is a killer song. Saw them with Dave Gleeson from the Screaming Jets singing and he did an amazing job, but pretty sure they have a new singer now  I recently went through the two most recent albums before this one and there were a couple of ok tracks, but mostly mid. Fun fact: I saw the Angels a couple of years before Doc died at the Middle hotel in Ferntree Gully and they seemed to hate each other. Pretty sure Doc said nothing to the crowd all night. Fun fact 2: when they were building the transit bar in Melbourne, a mate and I found a service elevator that went to the roof, which was under construction. After peeing off the roof, which is always fun, we realised that we could clearly hear the music 5 or 6 floors below from a DJ I think. He was playing Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again. We started yelling down the No Way Get Fucked, Fuck Off bit thinking we were hilarious. Then soon we noticed people looking up, and for some reason they seemed to be clearly hearing us. Another mate then called us to tell us security were on the way up the stairs so we took the service elevator down and managed to laugh it off. Stoopid drunk story I guess, but fun days.
    • Cheeky, getting your artwork in there. I wonder how you did that.  I like the vocal track on #1 and that'd be my pick. I personally don't dig the female versions of songs, because I'm not a female (yet?) and as these are songs written by ourselves I personally feel the best interpretation is an AI dude voice taking the place of your dude voice.
    • Yeah, that's great but this is obviously an accomplished musician probably completely in control of this output... not done with Suno, I'd bet. There's definitely dudes out there who are perfectly capable of doing their own music, like this dude, but for whatever reason might not be able to put a project together, again, for whatever reason... but this definitely feels a lot more like AI feeling in the missing gaps for someone otherwise in complete control of what he wants.  Either way, it is very cool indeed.  As Darkstone says, I'm not sure paying is the way to get the best results. I'm also not saying it isn't, especially with other platforms that are not Suno. I think already knowing what you're doing, musically, is the best way to get best results, personally. Suno, for example, is just perfect for someone who might enjoy writing lyrics but is not in any way shape or form an accomplished (or even adequate, lol) musician.  But yeah, it's pretty cool for some fun. I'm not sure if you checked out my links above. Keeping them pretty quiet due to lyrical content, lol, but you might dig some of the stuff in my links. 'As the moment passes by' and 'I'll wait for you' are two of my personal faves. Along with 'Faith to fall.'
    • Yeah, musically it's what you want, but vocally... Maybe Alex should take some vocal lessons from Ken Tamplin. ;}
    • Your Eyes - Darkstone (2024) Two versions of my song number 6     https://suno.com/song/e8c1e85b-21ee-4d35-a64b-e786f00944d2   https://suno.com/song/9144c77a-bd7c-49c1-9508-f724d0832fdb
    • Yep, although I was never a massive fan.
    • Yes, celebrating their fifty years. There only two original members left in the band. Dusty might agree with me the Angels died when the original singer passed away.
    • It's just not the same without the Doc though...
