Don't boot me for this one - lol

I would say it's this site that got me started on all these genres when looking up bands.

So just seeing how everyone labels things.

For me:

Ballsy Rock 'N' Roll - ACDC, Jackyl, Kix, Dirty Looks
Sleaze Glam - Poison, Nitro, Roxx Gang
Glam - Hanio Rocks, Alice Cooper
AOR - John Waite, Bryan Adams
Melodic Hard Rock - Bon Jovi, Nelson, White Lion
Hard Rock Glam (if I were to use this one) - Motley Crue, Ratt
Hard Rock - Guns N Roses, Tesla, Dokken, Winger, Bonfire, Gotthard, Fair Warning
Blues Hard Rock - Cinderella, Tangier, Whitesnake
Melodic Metal - Axel Rudi Pell, Queensryche, Scorpions
Heavy Metal - Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden
Power Metal - Avantasia, Freedom Call

I tend to split is all a lot less

Hard Rock covers 80% of it
Pub Rock - heavier Jackyl, ACDC  type stuff
Glam Rock - Early Poison, Electrik, Bai Bang, etc
AOR - songs heavy with synth and poppy keyboards
Progressive - Dream Theatre, Watchtower etc

Then you've got your 'metal' genres - death, speed etc etc which I really don't listen to.

Yea forgot about Progressive which I don't have much of.

You could split metal into more things like NWOBHM, Thrash, Industria etc. But I don't have as many metal bands.

I kinda made up Ballsy Rock 'N' Roll since that is how many of them are described.

Will have to look more into Pub Rock, First time I heard of that.

I've always kept it simple. Three main general categories. AOR, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Of course,  there are a myriad of sub genres in each category but as a general rule of thumb for myself, those are the three main categories that I distill everything down to.

Yeah, Maiden and Judas Priest etc used to be heavy metal, now their hard rock

(and they play Bon Jovi and Def Leppard on golden oldies radio stations)

These days heavy metal qualifies as more thrash, hardcore, speed, death, screamo, etc for me

Spot on mate. Any talk of genres is purely relative. I think it's very much a personal reference  thing.

Maiden & Priest were just a couple of obvious references. Nothing to do with nationality

The point is, when Maiden & Priest & Metallica & Anthrax & Megadeth & etc came out they were all classed as heavy metal.
They no longer are.

Before them Zepplin, & Deep Purple & Black Sabbath were all heavy metal when they came out.
They aren't any more.

If you wanna talk England, then I guess what was NWOBHM is now NWOBHR :)

Kind of doesn't matter about "these days"  to me when talking about the good old days.  Maiden/Priest/DIO is Heavy metal to me. Jovi/Leppard/Crue is Hard Rock, Journey,Survivor is AOR.

If I am trying to describe a band to someone, I might use the odd genre or other band comparison, but otherwise it does not matter whether its Heart or Lawnmower Deth, its all rock n metal to me.

I use a two-category system:

1. Stuff that sucks

2. Stuff that doesn't suck

I wonder if this means a return to the project's original synthwave style?

    • New song 'Siren Song'. From Frontiers: Seventh Crystal, who stormed on the melodic rock scene in 2021 since their stunning debut album "Delirium", have announced the release of their third full-length, "Entity". Seventh Crystal took everything up a major level (or two, really), "Entity" sees the bands exploring and expanding different genres, bringing their melodic rock formula, to progressive rock fields, sometimes little heavier and back to their unique rock style. Seventh Crystal is a melodic hard rock band from Gothenburg formed by Kristian Fyhr in 2019. What started as a solo project by Kristian quickly grew into a larger endeavor when Johan Älvsång and Olof Gadd joined the project. Shortly after, Anton Roos and Emil Dornerus also joined the band, completing the initial lineup. In 2020 the band signed a deal with Frontiers Records and released their debut album "Delirium" in 2021, which made waves all around the world. Due to the guitar-heavy parts on the album, the band realized they needed one more guitarist to be able to perform the songs live. Gustav Linde, an old friend of Anton Roos, took on the job, and the band began to work on their slightly more guitar-oriented follow-up album "Wonderland." The album "Wonderland" was released in 2023 alongside the EP "Infinity," establishing the band as an act to be reckoned with. During the fall, Johan Älvsång decided to step aside, and the band continued as a five-piece into the recordings of a third album. Drawing inspiration from a variety of genres, from soft rock to hard-hitting heavy metal, Seventh Crystal showcases a diverse range of musical expression. The band aims to be authentic and serve as an inspiration, outlet, and escape for their audience. Their sound is characterized by bombastic productions, catchy hooks, and dramatic and emotional melodies. TRACKLIST: 1. Oathbreaker 2. Thirteen to One 3. 404 4. Path of the Absurd 5. Architects of Light 6. Interlude 7. Blinded by the Light 8. Siren Song 9. Versus 10. Mayflower 11. Push Comes to Shove 12. A Place Called Home 13. Song Of The Brave
    • The latest band featured is "Y&T". This is a good one, as always with channel.  On a side note, I'm just thinking that there aren’t too many bands that have a Lead Singer that is also the Lead Guitarist.
