I like the album plenty - 84% is a great score to me, and I definitely think it's fitting for that disc. It's very good, but 'Tough it out' it much better, imo. :)

Haha, and each percent is an exclamation mark. 'Tough it out' is sadly one of those discs brought down by two songs ('Obsession' and 'Feels so good'). Without those two it's in the 90's, comfortably.

Some great ones this year as well. My pick is Van Halen's 5150 with BJ's Slippery just behind with DLR's Eat 'Em Smile picking up bronze.

This is everything from '86 that I've listened to enough times to be sure of. The three standouts for me would be Cinderella's Night Songs, Tesla's Mechanical Resonance, and Queensryche's Rage for Order. All three are nearly equal in brilliance, but I'd put Rage for Order at the top. It's my second favourite album from the 'Ryche.

Ratt - Dancing Undercover
Savatage - Fight for the Rock
GTR - GTR
Genesis - Invisible Touch
Tesla - Mechanical Resonance
Black 'N Blue - Nasty, Nasty
Cinderella - Night Songs
Queensryche - Rage for Order
Europe - The Final Countdown
Stryper - To Hell With the Devil

There are some absolute crackers on 'Rage For Order' ... although I think we can all agree that, when it comes to the cover photos, their stylist should be taken outside and shot ...

Damn! I have to re-think everything now ... I'd forgotten about Elixir's utterly brilliant debut album, 'Son Of Odin' ...

Album covers? Yeah, but that wasn't their greatest offense. You'll have to look to Mindrcime II.

Another holy year! Fifth Angel would be enough for it, but, Gawd, give mercy on those great releases + my all time favorite track...

You always post stuff I've never heard of or seen before.

That Dammaj cover is amazing, though. Oh, and also Hawk. Stunning!

I thought it might be cool to make a list of what I think my top 5 might be, and compare it to the eventual list when I finish all my ratings. So, based on Glen's I'll predict this as my top 5:

  1. Fate - A Matter of Attitude
  2. Aviator – s/t
  3. Poison - Look What The Cat Dragged In
  4. Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet

And probably one of these at number 5:

  1. Cinderella Night Songs
  2. Skagarack Skagarack
  3. Treat The Pleasure Principle

My Top 10 best of 1986 (in alphabetical order)

Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet

Cinderella - Night Songs

Europe - The Final Countdown

Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time

Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?

Queen - A Kind Of Magic

Tesla - Mechanical Resonance

Van Halen - 5150

Vinnie Vincent Invasion - Vinnie Vincent Invasion

W.A.S.P. - Inside The Electric Circus

Some extremely good releases here, and no problems compiling an easy Top 10 without the need to pad it out with anything I consider to be average. This was the year I first started getting into rock music after hearing singles by Bon Jovi and Europe on one of those "Now" compilations, and I also remember renting something called Iron Maiden from the local library because the cover looked cool. :D

    • I have a few (two, maybe three?) friends on here who know me and my ongoing fascination with ballads and power ballads. I thought i'd catch you up on the project. As a teen I made a collection of 10 or so mix tapes which i named "Mellow Metal," which looking back makes me chuckle. While the title's alliteration was pleasing to the ears, many of the songs included on the tapes were hardly metal. Ballads by Cheap Trick, Heart, and other such outliers were included in the collection. In August of 2020 i began my journey of an online project by starting a list of every ballad i knew by AOR, Hard Rocks, Heavy Metal, and Hair Metal acts. I crafted criteria for "What Makes a Power Ballad," and the list began to grow. Quickly. In December of that year i lost my oldest son to an overdose, and my enthusiasm and passion for that project evaporated. In the ensuing months, the original domain lapsed and i remained uninspired. The project died. Three years later, I was looking for something to bring me joy — so i revived the project with a new domain of thepowerballadz.com. I began to once again make posts online asking for song suggestions and i realized i had real trouble selling my song choices as POWER BALLADS. People rightfully pushed me on my song choices, and i realized that the term POWER BALLAD was too ... focused. I realized i wanted all mellow songs by bands that i love ... some of which are power ballads, some are just ballads, and yet some aren't even ballads ... just mellow songs. So, I've retooled my criteria from determining what a POWER BALLAD is to determining what songs make the cut to be on my list. I've also decided that the title thepowerballadz isn't working anymore ... so I've gone with theballadz.com. Is that a perfect moniker? Probably not. (Got a better idea? Let me know!) So, HERE is a link to the updated website and HERE is a link to the updated criteria. I'd love to hear thoughts from any ballad (power ballad or not) fans. Thanks guys!

    • I guarantee that virtually nobody here will like this, as it is death metal, but interesting and innovative choices in instrumentation and composition intrigue me. When this song hits the breakdown it takes on very interesting vibe IMO.
