Sorting your CDs

Yeah it's really difficult to sort again & again all those cds. I'm trying to sort when new cds come up to 300 & give them a good listen first.

Yeah, we got these awesome new open steel cupboard/drawer sort of things on the weekend with 4 shelves that can hold approx. 120 CDs each. So I get about 480 CDs in these things and it's so convenient and nicely filed. I intend to buy two more to put even futher CDs in to decrease CD rack usage. The only killer is they're $70 each and I already bought two this weekend... so I'm going to wait a while before I buy a few more. Love them, though.

 

 

What do these racks/shelves look like??? Trying to find an affordable option for my cd's right now...

 

Here you go mate, this is them:

 

 

Approx. 120 CDs in each tray - 480 per entire rack.

 

I bought two of them on the weekend and they slot into the bottom of the wardrobe perfectly - so that way they don't get in anyone's way, but they're all filed away in alphabetical order. So if I want to listen to a CD, just open up the wardrobe, pull out the appropriate drawer and pluck the CD out. It is SOOO good and as I said I plan to buy at least two more for the spare bedroom too... but I need some more $$$ first.

I think it's actually a shoe holder or something. Random wardrobe storage. My wife bought one to put all her shoes in. We brought it home and I'm sitting there watching her fill it with 14,000 pairs of shoes and then I get this flash of genius where I think it might be a perfect height for CDs... and sure as f*ck it was. Went out and bought two more right away.

It is a major pain in the ass to sort and organize cds. I had stayed on top of it for a long time but with this house remodel, it's chaos to say the least. I have two walls of shelves in a small room and space is almost gone. No clue what the fuck I'll do next.

I was on top of it forever too... until I moved out and got married. Next plan is to list them all again in a spreadsheet and then try and sell off the ones I don't want anymore. All that'll take at least another 3 years, when I'll have another 500 to file away.

for my very modest collection, i use zip cases. did away with the jewel boxes all together, the majority are CDrs anyway.

Not sure exactly what spin up is, but I just put them in on their sides with the spine (is that what you meant?) facing up and I have them front to back - two rows of about 45 and then to ensure I use every ounce of space there is, I am putting three left to right rows of 10 in the third column (which sadly isn't big enough for a third full row of front to back).

 

I found them in a place called Howards Storage World in Australia. Not sure where you'd get them there, mate.

Just A-Z .... but box sets are seperate from the everyday CD.

 

My problem is that downstairs I have a small 75 ish CD rack that keeps stuff that's currently high on the spin rota near to hand - as my CD's are upstairs. But it's a pain in the arse putting them all back in the correct order in the racking upstairs when the baby rack is full - and doubly worse if I have some new CD's as I have to move the already arranged CD's along in the big rack and clear space, and move others down et.c.....f**k. No matter how well I try to arrange it or leave enough free space to enter new CD's I still end up pratting about!

My wife thinks I'm batty, but I will go in my cd room and stare at the racks for hours, pulling cd after cd out and just reading the liner notes and looking at the pix...

I noticed a few CDs that I haven't heard for a while and at the end of all this I will go from the start and listen to all the CDs I see that I haven't heard for an age, but as for sorting them - yep, absolutely hate it. It's just a complete pain in the ass. You always miss one/some and have to go back and re-do a portion, it's hot and sweaty and agitating work and just takes up so much freakin' time that you could be using for something more pleasant. Nothing wrong with soaking in and enjoying your collection... when you can go to a previously sorted part and look with ease and leisure on your side... but getting to that point is awful, imo.

Aha! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who does this!! Before we remodeled our downstairs my CD collection was in one of those big wooden spinning racks in the corner of the living room and there were many an evening where I would sit in the chair that was next to it, just pulling random CDs out and reading liner notes and booklets while my wife watched TV. She too thought I was losing my mind. Perhaps I am, but at least now I'm not alone!

Ready for moving house, I`ve boxed all my cd`s into 2 or 3 large cardboard boxes.

 

Started off in some kind of order but then the girls started to help me and that soon went out of the window.

Hey R.R.F.!

Last time I moved, this is what I did. I did have over 20 milk crates to help (Don't ask where I got them from ).

Start with the last c.d. in you collection and work your way backwards until you fill up a crate.

Make sure you buy number stickers to number the crates (Go to a drug store, office supply should sell them).

Make sure you line the crate with newspaper so you don't scratch or damage your c.d.'s.

Always!....I do mean ALWAYS check the weather report

This was the easiest way for me to move over 3,000 c.d.'s at the time.

shelves but it can be confusing and overlap into different aspects of my weird sorting.

I too will pull CDs out and read the liner notes etc...
