Meniketti is awesome, rock solid and a very tasteful player. Aldo Nova was mentioned above, who was absolutely brilliant when I saw him, completely effortless when he was playing - A fantastic keyboard player aswell.

 

One person not mentioned, that probably goes down as one of the best players I have ever seen (besides Lukather) is Saga's Ian Crichton. A phenomenal player that always does something different from the norm and really should be a name on everyone's list, even if they are not fans of the band.

I had the rare opportunity to attend the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame commemoration concert for Les Paul which was held in Cleveland last October, and it was the best show I have EVER seen! Besides having the chance to finally see my idol Les play live with his jazz band, I heard Lonnie Mack (with his Gibson Flying V serial numbered 7!), James Burton, the Ventures, Richie Sambora, and Billy Gibbons (you want to talk about a guitar GOD with a live tone that is beyond description!).

 

But the two highlights of the night for me were Steve Lukather's ridiculously metallic jazz rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" which quite frankly is the coolest thing I have ever witnessed at a live event, and Slash's solo set, which ripped the house down. I was never that impressed by Slash's playing on CD, but I came away from that show with the impression that he is one of the greatest guitarists alive today.

Three that I haven't seen mentioned yet that I think are underrated are Steve Blaze, Steve Lynch, and Jack Frost.

 

I just saw Seven Witches a couple weeks ago... I had forgotten how much I liked Jack Frost.

Well I know a few have mentioned Lukather, but you can add me to the list. Although I mostly love TOTO (the less proggy stuff) I never quite realised just how amazing the guy is on the guitar, especially when he's not singing, until I saw them live a few years back.

 

As for overrated:

Yeah, good tone - easy to play though. Sums him up really....

 

Although he clearly plays down the pecking order from Doug Aldrich in Whitesnake, seeing them live (as I have done about 4 times with this new line-up) it's obvious why Aldrich is the main-man. Plus seeing Winger live, at Firefest a few years back, really confirmed this for me. Not saying he's bad, far from it (and his solo album proves the guy can sing pretty damn well too) but he is hardly the greatest technician in MHR....

Sid "Boogie" Fletcher is/was very good but I won't consider him a "natural" like Vito Bratta.

 

There is this thing that you will hear in guitarists that can make you say that this one is a "natural" or virtuoso or not. That's not in how many notes one guitarist can cram in a second but it's that something special in their sound. Like Vito Bratta and Steve Lynch. Their solos in one whole album are just 3 songs in comparable to a Dream Theater album but I don't hear what Vito and Steve have from John Petrucci.

 

Popularity, as well. Kirk Hammett is the most popular guitarist who ever played thrash but not as good as the great Alex Skolnick.

Backed. Plus Hammett barely plays rhythm, & given that thrash is all about riffs & groove then a great thrash player has to be a rhythm player too - & none are better at writing riffs than Gary Holt of Exodus....

Brad Gillis is a guy that I always thought could shine if given the chance. He was great on "Speak of the Devil" and if you blinked you missed the Vicious Rumors gig. Needs more stability with a group that will showcase his skills.

 

My true sleeper pick is Alfred Morris of Iron Man. Of course being a total Sabbath head gives Al an edge but the man flat out has the most crushing guitar tone today. He writes great riffs and can solo for days.

Oh, YEAH!!! I've always loved that Blackout solo. I still believe that he's not on the same league with the Scorps first 2 lead guitarists but with that solo, he's telling it to the world that he can hold it on his own.
