What DVD's did you buy this week?

I've never seen the words 'excellent' and 'Australia' used in the same sentence to describe a movie from here. Although 'Wolf Creek' was kind of cool.

 

And I don't mean to bad-note my homeland - best country on the planet, imo - I just don't think I've ever seen a decent movie made here, aside from 'Wolf Creek', as noted.

 

What about The Castle??

Everyone always says that to me and everyone always hates me for saying I think that movie is crap. I don't get how it's meant to be funny, but to each their own. I seem to be the only person who doesn't love it so maybe I'm wrong.

It sort of combines spaghetti western elements (taciturn, no-nonsense, quick-shooting antihero) with some truly messy gore setpieces (similar to Peter Jackson's early stuff) and a few out-of-left-field sci-fi leanings (toward the end), all slickly, stylishly directed.

I try to stay as far away from zombie films as I can, though, so I might just leave this 'Undead' on to you, mate. Is it recent, or an old one?

Yeah, to each their own but I'm just not a huge fan of that type of stuff. You can pretty much be guaranteed that most the movie is going to occur at night. (I generally HATE night time movies), although 'Lost Highway' is a magnificent exception. And also it's bound to be very corny and would probably irritate me. Sorry mate, I know there's probably a couple of exceptions, but they're generally not my thing.

 

And don't get me wrong with the whole night thing - it's not a deal breaker, just a preference. I love horror movies, but prefer they stay as far away from my most disliked genre - sci-fi - as possible.

Actually, a large chunk of Undead takes place in the daylight. It's not corny either--most of the humor is of the gallows variety, such as zombie fish attacking a gunpacking fisherman, or a body obliterated from the waist up, but the legs keep stumbling around, guts hanging out. As for the sci-fi thing...it's part of the "twist" ending, and barely makes up a fraction of the movie's running time. But hey, to each their own. You like Donnie Darko and I think it sucks donkey balls, so maybe our cinematic tastes don't parallel as closely as our musical preferences.

I must admit that doesn't surprise me. A good mate of mine with a DVD collection almost as big as my CD collection recently saw it too and couldn't appreciate it either. It seems that people who are more into the fast-paced action films, or I guess even horror, can't appreciate it's brilliance. As you say, to each their own, though.

 

Just out of curiosity, what didn't you like about 'Donnie Darko'? I asked my other mate the same question and he said that expected more because it was so heavily hyped by everyone he knew... and that it lacked content and "missed the point." Me, I'm more inclined to think that people who enjoy certain straight-forward films, like plain (and to me, borning as hell) action films - films that you can't not follow with great ease... What I think puts people off 'Donnie Darko' is that fact that it is a mindf*ck and is far from easy to understand, and the fact that people don't "get it" seems to piss some people off and therefore makes them hate it... whereas I think that is part of it's genius and it's a large part of the appeal for me.

HALLOWEEN (Rob Zombie version)--some horror fans bitched that Zombie "butchered" (pun intended) a horror classic with this reimagining/remake, but I thought he did a pretty good job. This is the R-rated theatrical cut, which I actually prefer to the unrated Director's Cut version.

DIARY OF THE DEAD--Romero returns with another solid entry in his long-running zombie saga, opting to shoot in the same pseudo-documentary, hand-held video camera-style of Blair Witch/Cloverfield, but far less shaky. Of course, being Romero, he doesn't skimp on the gore, my favorite setpiece being the dispatching method of choice for the Amish farmer (those who have seen this film know what I'm talking about). OK, so maybe it's not quite a cinematic masterpiece, but horror fans thinking they should skip this one would be dead wrong...

The Nightmare Returns - Alice Cooper.......Previously had this as a DVD'r copy taken from a VHS tape that I copied from another VHS tape {so I could take the ads out} that was recorded off the TV about 18 years ago ................So in other words the quality was not to crash hot.

 

Picked it up for $9.99 at JB HiFi today and I'm pretty happy about that

DOOMSDAY--damn good action movie from the director of The Descent. Recalls the good ol' days when action films weren't castrated, sissified PG-13 affairs. This sucker earns its R-rating.

 

LETHAL WEAPON 4--the only Lethal Weapon flick I was missing on DVD. Plus, I got it for free, so ya can't beat that. This is actually my second-favorite entry in the franchise, after the first one.

THE RUINS (Unrated)--saw this in theaters and thought it was a pretty good horror movie. Takes a lot to make me squirm, but the amputation scene did just that. Haven't watched this unrated version yet, but looking forward to the extra snippets of gore.
