"Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" (2011)

 

 

Feel-good documentary about Arnel Pineda, the small-time singer who was plucked from obscurity in the Philippines thanks to the power of YouTube and landed his dream gig - new frontman for stadium rock heroes Journey. In spite of his sudden rush to fame, he still manages to remain a humble, likeable guy.

Inspiring stuff, with lots of cool concert clips of Arnel with the band jammin' some of Journey's most classic tunes. Enjoyable even if you're barely a casual Journey fan (like me).

The latest James Bond Movie.. While I am still not completely sold on Daniel Craig as Bond, He is NO Sean Connery, I am starting to come around to Him I guess as I liked this more than the other Bond movie I saw him in.. Casino Royale.. Which was also good... The ending to this movie I admit shocked Me a bit, and I am not sure I really like the young guy playing Q, but I did enjoy the movie....

^^ Skyfall was awesome. Craig finally made the Bond role his own. Also, best opening-credit sequence in years. The late Maurice Binder would've been proud.

"Dead End Drive-In" (1986)

In this weird-but-almost-watchable Aussie post-apocalypse flick, a hot rodder attempts to escape from a gang infested futuristic drive-in theatre that doubles as a detention center for "undesirable" youths. In other words, once you enter the Star Drive-In, you don't get out!!

 

The trailer above compares this flick to "A Clockwork Orange" and "Mad Max," which is pretty laughable. Once the pieces are set up in this movie it took for-EVER for anything to happen, though the climactic action sequence ended things on a high note.

 

My advice: Don't bother.

But for real, you think "Lock, Stock," "Snatch," "Mean Machine," "The Transporter," "The Italian Job," "Revolver," "The Bank Job," "The Expendables," "The Mechanic," and "Killer Elite" were all terrible, terrible films?

I don't think they are terrible at all, but I would take Chuck and all the 80's action movies over these listed. But I really do like "The Italian Job", one of my favorite heist movies ever.

A few viewings over the weekend:

 

"Death Wish V: The Face of Death" (1994)

In Charles Bronson's final turn as vigilante Paul Kersey, Paul's trying to live the quiet life with a new fashion designer fiancee. Unfortunately her ex hubby is a big wig in the local mob who doesn't like Paul muscling in on "his" territory. You can pretty much write it yourself from there.
This was the only "DW" I hadn't seen, it's obviously extremely low budget (resembling a made-for-TV movie) but the violence is brutal as ever and Bronson (who was in his early 70s when he made this!!) maintains his title as America's Oldest Badass.

 

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" (2003)

First installment of the blockbuster Disney franchise introduces Johnny Depp's Capt. Jack Sparrow, a down on his luck pirate captain who gets mixed up in some supernatural nonsense involving a cursed treasure and a vengeful ghost ship crew. Action packed and entertainingly silly.

 

"Death Machine" (1994)

A low budget sci fi/horror set in the "near future" of 2003 (haha) with a crazed inventor who sics his top secret pet project - a giant killer robot - on his employer's new CEO after she fires him. The so-called "Warbeast" then chases her all over the company's high tech skyscraper.
I have read a lot of rave reviews of this flick online claiming it to be some sort of undiscovered cult sci-fi classic, but I wonder if those people saw the same movie I did. This was a loud, irritating flick pieced together from bits stolen out of "Aliens," "The Terminator" and "Hardware," that gave me a screaming headache. Don't bother.

Very good acting by Gosling, a story of a delusional man that's in love with a sex doll. Kinda has similar vibe with 'I Am Sam' but 'Sam' is much better story. The message is pretty clear that the whole town is not judgmental and kind, but yeah a bit too unrealistic. Story is a bit flat so might be boring for some, but good acting by him!

"Grabbers" (2013)

In this goofy Irish horror comedy, a horde of multi-tentacled, blood sucking sea monsters invade a small island village. Fortunately the local constable (who also happens to be a raging boozehound) discovers that alcohol is poisonous to the critters. So to keep everyone safe, the whole village gets extremely drunk in the local pub while the police figure out how to stop the monster invasion. Funny stuff in the "Shaun of the Dead" mold.
