"A Band Called Death" (2013)

Nope, it's not the story of the late Chuck Schuldiner and his legendary death-metal combo (though that would be pretty damn cool)... this documentary details the strange saga of "Death," a mid-70s Detroit hard rock band made up of three African American brothers who cut a record in 1975 and then promptly disappeared. When their music is rediscovered in the 21st century (thanks to the Internet) the two surviving brothers enjoy a bittersweet comeback.

This is an absorbing documentary about a forgotten bit of heavy rock history. I love learning about stuff like this. And "Death's" music sounds pretty bad-ass too!!

Watched "A New Hope" the other day. I've got the original theatrical editions on DVD.

yeah the IV-V-VI trilogy is awesome, lost count how many times I watched them

Yep. Same here. When I "watch" them, I'm usually doing something else as well, because I've seen them so many times I just quote it as it's playing.

"Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (2001)

Those lovable stoners from Kevin Smith's "Clerks" find out that Hollywood is making a movie about them... without their permission, and they go off on a road trip to stop the film. Mayhem, naturally, follows them everywhere they go. Jay & Silent Bob get mixed up with a team of international female jewel thieves, steal a monkey, and are pursued by a very determined wildlife marshal (Will Ferrell). Foul mouthed slapstick fun with cameos by just about everyone in Hollywood.

Damn I LOVE this movie!!! :rofl2::rofl2: Yea just about EVERYONE in Hollywood has a cameo....

From Wikipedia:

Dead Snow (Norwegian: Død snø) is a 2009 Norwegian zombie comedy film directed by Tommy Wirkola, starring Charlotte Frogner, Stig Frode Henriksen, Bjørn Sundquist, Ane Dahl Torp, and Jenny Skavlan. The film centers on a group of students surviving a Nazi zombie attack in the mountains of Norway. The premise of the film is similar to that of the draugr - a Scandinavian folkloric undead greedily protecting its (often stolen) treasures.

^^ Dead Snow is on my Netflix list, but I haven't gotten round to watching it yet. My wife thinks the "Nazi zombie" idea is "stupid" (to which I replied, "if by 'stupid' you mean 'awesome,' I agree!" Haha) so she refuses to watch it w/me. I'm gonna have to wait till I have some "alone time" to catch that one.

Anywhoo, last one I saw was:

"Firestorm" (1998)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcHSj4wxpMw

Hollywood tried to turn former NFL great Howie Long into an honest-to-goodness action hero in this formulaic-but-fun butt kicker. Howie's a Wyoming "smokejumper" who battles a raging forest fire and a gang of escaped convicts (who set the fire in order to cover up their jailbreak). This enjoyable but instantly forgettable popcorn flick tanked at the box office and took Howie's movie career down with it, but William Forsythe is great as the sleazy bad guy and the fire scenes are suitably thrilling.

Wonder how long til Hollywood remakes this as I see they are making a part 2, which obviously means there is a popularity factor.

"Last Days Here" (2011)

In the 1970s, Pentagram could've been America's answer to Black Sabbath... but the unpredictable nature of lead singer Bobby Liebling f*cked it up for them and the band fell apart. Liebling then spent the next 30+ years living in his parents' basement, using tons of drugs and putting together numerous half-assed "new" Pentagram lineups, hoping to get a second shot at the big time. When a longtime Pentagram fan begins acting as Bobby's new manager and tries to help him achieve that dream, they hit many obstacles along the way.

This flick is like the darker side of "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," as both films cover similar themes (i.e. rockers who probably should've hung it up ages ago, but refuse to quit) although Bobby Liebling's story is more tragic than Anvil's. Still, it's a fascinating, though somewhat depressing, film that's worth a look. Now I gotta look into getting some of Pentagram's tunes, cuz they sound pretty bad-ass...!

The Thanksgiving dishes are cleared away and that means it's time to start kickin' the annual Twisted Christmas film festival. First up...

"Jack Frost" (1997)

In this tongue-in-cheek comic horror cult classic, it's a few days before Christmas and a serial killer on his way to the execution chamber has a run-in with some experimental genetic material that turns him into a psycho Frosty. Once he's transformed, he seeks revenge on the cop who put him away in the first place.

...Seriously. I'm not makin' this sh*t up.

This hilarious (on purpose) zero-budget fun even stars a pre-"American Pie" Shannon Elizabeth as the town teenage tramp.

Obviously this is not to be confused with the family-friendly film by the same name starring Michael Keaton, which came out about a year after this... though I hear the Keaton movie is pretty horrific in its own right. :rofl2:

    • Never understood why Binary Music wasn't that popular (at least that was what I perceived). It's by far my favourite Palace album. Every songs have killer melodies and a good production.
    • I have bought a few that are decent, but the two that have impressed me most are Mick Mars and Judas Priest.
    • King Zebra , Gotus  , Saxon for me so far and the new Alicate disc is pretty decent. As you've said there are a few still to come(Black Diamonds,Nestor,Remedy,Seb Bach,Kissin Dynamite to name a few I'm waiting for) and another 3/4 of the year to go
    • Have enjoyed all his output apart from Binary Music...so i'll give this a goo too  hoping for something in the vein of the debut mixed with a little R'n'R radio.
    • Solid song there. 3 for 3 so far. I hope there will be an album out soon. C.H.
    • I am looking forward to this, I was wondering just a few days ago if Palace was working on anything recently. The album art looks like it was done by the same guy that did the art for the Platinum Overdose albums. C.H.
    • So supposedly out but can't find it. Anybody listened to it?
    • New album to be released July 12th. Press release: PRESENTING ’Reckless Heart,’ the brainchild of Lithuanian-born Swedish artist Michael Palace and the fifth spellbinding chapter in the PALACE saga. This explosive musical journey resurrects the essence of the 1980s, each track pulsating with the potential to score a classic action blockbuster or drive the adrenaline of a training montage. Inspired by genre-defining icons such as AVIATOR, FM and DARE alongside contemporaries CHEZ KANE and CRAZY LIXX, Michael Palace meticulously rebuilt the PALACE sound from the ground up, returning to the true origins and inspiration of the project. ’Reckless Heart’ is an essential cornerstone in any AOR and melodic rock aficionado’s collection. “It was time to go back to the roots, as they say, and finally make that true ’80s AOR album that I’ve dreamt of creating since I started PALACE. It’s the missing link between 1985 and 2024,” said Michael. Michael Palace embarked on his journey with Frontiers as a songwriter and guitarist for various projects such as FIRST SIGNAL, CRY OF DAWN, TOBY HITCHCOCK and KRYPTONITE. These successful collaborations paved the way for a deal with Frontiers, enabling Michael to deliver songs aligned with his vision under the name PALACE. ’Reckless Heart’ marks the fifth release, maintaining a bi-annual album release schedule since 2016. Recently, Michael has produced albums for KENT HILLI and NEVENA and done work across diverse genres while taking on various roles such as a songwriter, musician, producer, and engineer. Tracks: 1. Reckless Heart 2. The Widow’s Web 3. Back In Your Arms 4. Girl Is An Angel 5. You Give Me A Reason To Live 6. Back To ’85 7. For The Love 8. Turn This Car Around 9. Weightless 10. Move Me 11. Stronger By The Day
