Best albums of 2024

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd get the thread going for 2024....

We're a little past 1/4 of the way.  Honestly, not sure I even have any albums that have grabbed me too much.  I thought Crazy Lixx Two Shots At Glory was okay but that's mostly just a compilation album with on a few new songs.  Also have liked a few songs on Judas Priest....That's probably my favorite album so far I'd guess but I really only like 3-4 tracks.

Plenty of stuff coming though so things should pick up.

King Zebra , Gotus  , Saxon for me so far and the new Alicate disc is pretty decent.

As you've said there are a few still to come(Black Diamonds,Nestor,Remedy,Seb Bach,Kissin Dynamite to name a few I'm waiting for) and another 3/4 of the year to go ;)

I have bought a few that are decent, but the two that have impressed me most are Mick Mars and Judas Priest.

Been a really good year for the heavier releases so far…

Judas Priest - Invincible Shield 🛡️

Saxon - Hell, Fire & Damnation

Accept - Humanoid

Striker - Ultrapower

Mick Mars - The Other Side of Mars

Thoroughly enjoying all of those. :banger:

From the lighter side…

Blackberry Smoke - Be Right Here

The End Machine - Quantum Phase

Oz Hawe Petersson’s Rendezvous - S/T

Seven Year Witch - Vampire Calamity

Scott Stapp - Higher Power

Kickin’ Valentina just arrived, and King Zebra is on its way; two more that I feel will be very solid releases. :pickle:

I'm looking forward to hearing the upcoming releases from Riot V, Vain, Nestor, and Kissin Dynamite, to name a few.  I thought the new ones from Honeymoon Suite and The End Machine were solid.  But my favorites so far are Striker, King Zebra, Grand, and Saxon.

Really looking forward to a couple of upcoming releases as well. Maverick is sounding promising, and most hyped for The Warning as all singles released from that so far have been top notch. Plus there is the new Rolling Quartz EP on the horizon.

Of the 7 releases that I have bought so far this year, Priest is still the leading contender for album of the year, but now added Seb Bach to the list of top albums.

Easily my faves are Priest, Mick Mars, Seb Bach & Durbin. I really need to spin Lipz a few more times as that hasn't quite hooked me like their debut. Only reason Crazy Lixx isn't on my list is it is mostly a compilation even if some of the songs are re-records.

Gun is probably the only one so far that has left me underwhelmed.

I should be picking up the About Us album soon as I loved their debut. Maverick and The Warning are both on preorder. I might pick up the Slash album too.

What was it someone saying about this being the year music died?

As we approach the midpoint of the year this week, I'd say my top 5 as of now would be:

1) Maverick

2) Collateral

3) Nestor

4) Sebastian Bach

5) Judas Priest

I'm really enjoying Maverick and feel like that's far and away been my favorite so far this year .  I'd say Collateral has been my clear #2.  But I feel like my other spots could probably all be interchanged depending on my mood.  We'll see what the 2nd half brings.  I'm pretty sure Kissin' Dynamite is going to slide in there somewhere ;)

My top 5 as of right now:

1: Judas Priest (they have had the top spot since it released)

2: The Warning (latest addition and its an absolute banger with hooks galore)

3: Sebastian Bach (just a cool as fuck throwback)

4: Mick Mars (not played as much right now, but was on constant rotation when I bought it)

5: Durbin (just old school metal played really well)

Lipz, About Us and Marverick still have not fully grown on me.

Gun, Jovi and Bruce Dickinson were kinda weak or uninspiring. Crazy Lixx doesn't count as it is pretty much a compilation.

So 9 atm are particular favs of mine and looking at the release schedule I don't see much else apart from Invasion and Cats In Space that I'm really excited about...but you never know what surprise may appear between now and the next 155 days :P

Priest and Saxon were the best albums I've heard this year. Those were shockingly good albums actually. Have to listen to some of the others on that list.

One album I am looking forward to is the new fans of the dark cd, I've only recently discovered this band and I'm quite blown away by them, what I've heard so far

So I was just looking at the new releases I bought from this year, and while there are some new additions to expand from the top 5 I posted earlier this year, to a top 10, all the stuff in my original list are still in the top 10 (although obvs with three months to go, the ones near the bottom could be usurped).

Anyway as of now, this is where I am at:

1.       Judas Priest

2.       The Warning

3.       Nek!

4.       Rolling Quartz

5.       Band Maid

6.       April Art

7.       Lipz

8.       Sebastian Bach

9.       Mick Mars

10.   Durbin

I've got a solid top 3 at this point.  At least for me, these 3 are heads and shoulders above everything else:

1.  Kissin' Dynamite

2.  Eclipse

3.  Maverick

After that, it's really a hodgepodge of stuff.  New Roses, Daughtry (Only an EP but digging it), Collateral, Sebastian Bach, Judas Priest, Nestor, End Machine.  I'd probably put them in about that order at the moment.

  • My Little Pony

Looks like I've got a bit of catching up to do. I've been absent from the forums, and mostly listening to the classics.

    • Sounds pretty good all round...just preordered..released 22nd Nov
    • Luckily I will hopefully be front row so wont make a mess on anyones back.
    • If we never hear from you again, at least we'll know you went out with a smile on your face.
    • Wow! Thank you so much mate. That's a massive compliment. That was the first one I wrote and I think it's my favourite so far. Like Geoff, I'm tending to draw on past personal experiences for my lyrics and that one means a lot. I was thrilled when the AI came up with that interpretation.
    • Well this is some excellent news. Going to see Sophie Lloyds first headline show on 17th Oct in London (tiny club called The Underworld) and it has just been announced that the support act will be Chez Kane... can I handle two fit birds peforming on stage or will my heart give out before the show is over?
    • I don't rate or grade albums with any kinda numbering system or percentage. All I do is think which were the albums I enjoyed most, which generally means got played the most (I mean you don't play the worst albums over and over again for months), with memorable songs. Then when it comes to what order they go in. Once again, I just go with what I feel got the most airplay for me over the course of time. Obviously an album released in Jan is gonna potentially have more play time than one released in November, but It's down to longevity as well. If I play an album solidly for a month then move on, it's probably gonna be top 10, but if other albums are still being played regularly 3 or more months after release, those are gonna rank higher. I mean this year Judas Priest was a fairly early release in the year, but I am still playing it now, although  not as often. Then an album like Mick Mars which I loved, but has kinda fallen off my radar in the last six months, will rank a lot lower. I try to not go for recency bias as well even though I have been listening to one album in my top 10 for only a week, but it was such an insantaneous album I know its gonna get heavy play time for the next few months.
    • Good Times Roll-The Cars
    • Video for 'I'll Stand For You'.
    • New song 'Who Am I' taken from the album 'Into The Great Unknown' out November 15 through Frontiers.
    • @Darkstone, I just randomly clicked on your link and listened to "Hardened Heart." In the interest of full disclosure, I am not personally a fan of AI music--I find something about the vocals sterile and offputting--but I wanted to say that I thought that particular song sounded like something White Lion would have done back in the day. Nice power ballad, despite my aforementioned issues with AI tunes. While it's not for me, I'm glad people have an outlet for their creative impulses, and there's no doubt some cool stuff is emerging, with "Hardened Heart" being among the best I've heard.
