THE OFFSPRING – Let the Bad Times Roll (2021) April 12, 2021

THE OFFSPRING - Let the Bad Times Roll (2021) full

from various sopurces:

Working with mega producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi) THE OFFSPRING are back next week with their new album ”Let The Bad Times Roll”: twelve tracks that are drenched with shades of their previous offerings, while delivering a vibrant modern sound that’s seen the title track ‘Let The Bad Times Roll’ elevated to high rotation on rock radio with its commercial polish, while keeping the attitude of the band intact.

With ”Let The Bad Times Roll” The Offspring provide a refreshing soundtrack to your own personal apocalypse. Sugar-coating nothing with a satisfyingly merry acknowledgment that everything currently sucks, this is the perfect album to crank the volume on when you’re content just to watch the world burn for a day…

Returning to their signature blend of jovial rock n’ pop-punky with a cheeky twist, the album kicks off without foreplay. “This Is Not Utopia,” a rhythmically palpitating opener led by power chords and gang chants, denounces modern-day America from being the Promised Land it monikers itself to be. It might seem a curious move from a band that doesn’t consider itself political, but it sets the tone perfectly for what follows.

The title track and lead single, “Let the Bad Times Roll” is a near-perfect return to form. Its aggressive, guitar stabbing verses coupled with its poppy, acoustic-based chorus, and weighty lyrical undertones make it a perfect fit for the playlist to Satan’s spin class. And yet, the lazy fade-out that tags on to the end of the song is unforgivable, rendering its built-up momentum impotent.

One of the most enjoyable things about ‘Let the Bad Times Roll’ is every member is clearly heard, feels completely present, and sounds wholly invested.

Even on the reimagined Offspring milestone” Gone Away”, stripped back to a piano and vocal rendition with hints of strings that is as beautiful as it is haunting.

A result in no small part due to another return from legendary producer, Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crue), who clearly knows what fans want to hear on a great Offspring record.

Traits such as the dynamic duo of vocalist Dexter Holland and guitarist Noodles being a sonic force throughout. Especially evident on more moving numbers such as “Behind Your Walls,” which sees Holland cater to the verse with a seldom heard, lower register to his vocal delivery.

Again with “Coming for You”, which is brought to life by drummer Pete Padara and newcomer Todd Morse on bass. Morse makes a great impression on this record, particularly on what is sure to become an instant Offspring classic, the satirically, and joyously depressing, “We Don’t Have Sex Anymore”.

Led by a bass line that sounds like a nod to The Cure’s “Lovecats”, everything about this piece, from the horn section to the playful piano and painful, yet hilarious storytelling delivered by Holland, catapults this tale of sexless woe into the stratosphere. The album’s standout track, it achieves its own kind of happy ending, even if no one else does.

Despite what it might initially allude to, ‘Let the Bad Times Roll’ is not the overtly political statement it might suggest itself be. The narrative is one of reflections, not criticisms, observations as opposed to opinions, while musically the energy, thankfully, is as dynamic as ever.

A fun and entertaining shot for this lock down era.

  • AlphaMale changed the title to THE OFFSPRING - Let The Bad Times Roll (2021)

Very surprised to see you posting this, Russ. Is there something other than the fact Bob Rock produced this that I don't know about? Wouldn't think you'd have any time at all for a band like this?

I normally would have no interest whatsoever in this, but I am kind of intrigued to hear what it sounds like with Bob Rock on board.

He was probably just as surprised to see it posted on 0dayrox, which might have prompted him to share it here.

I'm more interested to know what the other "sopurces" he's using are.

That is the only reason. They had a few decent songs over the years. Not really a fan though.

And 99% of the text BANNED WEBSITE uses is stolen from somebody else on the web, thus "various sources".

I don't get it. Was my text censored? It looks fine to me.

They must've got called out, because it's proudly displayed at the top that all their blogs are original. Don't know. Don't care.

are we that desperate these days for anything that has a guitar? no, I'm not desperate enough to look forward to a new Offspring album... even with Bob Rock producing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks jag off.

After listening the "shite" sentiment still rings true. Not sure if I was Bob Rock I would want my name associated with this, but a payday is a payday. The same holds true for the Offspring as this stuff sounds like the latest Avril Levine record. Pass.

    • Sorry, that wasn't really what I meant. What I was really going for is that the songs on other albums seem to me to have more of a similar feel to them, like you can tell the songs for Freedom Rock were pretty much all written at the same time. I'm not saying that the songs on Force Majeure don't sound like H.E.A.T (even though I maintain it's not as good, based on the first few spins, as their previous efforts), but that they sound, to me, more "scatterbrained" than the selections from other records. That's not an easy thing to explain, but "direction" was the best word I could think of.    Again, I probably could explained my point better. I wasn't advocating for more guitars so much, but for more variety in the guitars we get. One of the best things for me about the first two H.E.A.T albums (less so for Address the Nation, but still there) was the subtle trade-offs between Dalone and Rivers and the solos that switched between them (good examples of this include the guitar work on "Late Night Lady," "Danger Road" and "Tonight," off the top of my head). Simply because Dalone and Rivers played different set ups and had some variance in tone, you could tell the difference between their playing (though admittedly there were times where Eric Rivers was completely underutilized and overshadowed). Because of the the combination of this record's production and the guitars being all Dave, you don't have as much of that, and that's what I was trying to convey.
    • Agree it reminds of earlier material, but I'm much less of a "Hang Tough" guy and much more of a "What A Shame" kind of guy.
    • Skid Row Nelson Steel Panther Harem Scarem WASP Van Hagar Saliva Joey Tempest Michael Sweet White Lion Mr. Big ... are the easy ones for me. Possibly Warrant as well come to think of it. Some other popular ones listed taht I don't agree with would be Slaughter - 2nd album pipped it GNR - always preferred either UYI albums Tuff - really only had 1 1/2 albums so don't count
    • and the lyrics tick tock time to rock don't make you cringe?? if it was 1986 and I was 16 it might have been just passable but now, no.
    • Another release that seems to have been completely overlooked here on HH... check out those vids for "Give It Up" and "Love Will Not Let You Down". I swear both tunes sound like something you'd hear from AdrianGale!  Compassion | Akiba Music (bandcamp.com)
    • I might stone thrown at me, but hear some Scorpions.
    • "One Voice", which is a demo, is the only one I hear the tape "hiss" on...
    • Is that cassette tape hiss I hear at the start of the song? Is the whole album like that or only the demo tracks?
