Toto - XIV

yeah those TOTO guys are fast, shutting down every leaks :D

I still cannot - for the life of me - understand why bands remove their videos from the net. What on earth is the problem with drumming up some interest in an upcoming album by allowing people to sample songs from it? Just seems so stupid to me.

Couple reasons I can think of:

A. People can rip the audio off the videos through free online programs.

2. If the artist or the label uploaded the song/music video, they have the potential to make money off the views. If others are posting the same song, it's taking away viewers.

Interesting track. Not what I expected, but actually pretty good. Doesn't sound to me like a band with a history like Toto's; more like an inexperienced AOR band. But it's nice. I doubt I'll like the album, but I'll try it out.

Unmistakably Toto. They have a pretty distinct sound, especially with Lukather's guitars, Paich's/ Porcaro's Keyboards and Joe Williams vocals, which it has to be said are absolutely back to top form here. So looking forward to hearing all of this.

That 'Orphan' is pretty excellent. Like Jez said, unmistakeably Toto. In fact it sounds really similar to another Toto song but I just can't think of which one. Really like this band and looking forward to the new album.

I don't know if it's just 'cause I've never been a fan of these guys, but I'm not really feeling this one at all; even less so than the other. I know being lite is their thing, but there's just no drums here at all but a light fluttering sound in the background. I guess the hook in there is kind of okay, but I get the same feel as the first track. I know they're professionals and as old as time itself, but it all just sounds amateurish to me. Not like a band that's been around for so long.

Anyway, maybe I just don't get Toto and never will, but I like to keep my finger on the pulse of this sort of stuff, 'cause I'm nosey. But yeah, for me it's a definite pass on the two songs so far, and definitely on the production / sound quality / ballsiness also.

Very odd comments again....just weird actually.

What exactly is amateurish about those songs? To me they scream of a band at the very height of its creative output.

Toto are never going to be hard rock ballsy - for that you need to look elsewhere - they are an AOR band with flavours of Westcoast. Having said that this is about as ballsy as theyve been in many a year.

Issues with production? Wow, all I will say is that this will probably be the best produced album you'll hear this year within this genre....except maybe the Mecca III album.

I agree, the production is huge and I think the song is very well written. Toto is an admirable band but I do get if Geoff can't get into them easily because maybe they grow from the 70s rock and evolve from that. I myself love some 60s and 70s rock so it's not a problem :D

Eh?

I detest 60s music and most 70s music (except a handful of late 70s releases)

To me this sounds exactly nothing like 60s / 70s music.

Just excellent 80s influenced AOR/Westcoast.

Cheers

Yep. Just a bunch of amateurs. They could learn a thing or two from the likes of Vega or White Widdow.

;}

Seriously, Geoffrey, whatever you're listening to music through, you need to smash it to pieces, set it on fire, and get some proper speakers. I can't bring myself to believe that your ears are wholly to blame for these such outlandish remarks.

Isn't this Apple Macbook Pro stuff meant to be the height of modern technology? Good stuff generally sounds fine through this. I'm a very basic creature, though, and whilst I stand by the fact that overall it sounds poorly produced to me, so far, i just cannot stand a bad/weak drum sound. I don't care how soft your band is - drums are drums. They're not tin cans, and they should sound like drums, all the time every time. So I will admit that my dislike for the sound/production does mostly stem from the super weak tin cans... I mean drums.

As for the "amateur" comments, I just feel like there is a hook in there and it's just avoided. And I know this "west coast" music is meant to sound like this (kind of out of time, jazzy and awkward) and it's a style of music I kind of detest to be honest, so I should avoid this thread... but like I said, I'm just a nosey creep.

And yes, Karpethead, I prefer Vega and White Widdow 100% to this. Rather than drag me into some stupid discussion about shit like that, just dig up some old Van Halen or Led Zeppelin threads and apply my comments there to this thread so I don't have to rehash them. ;)
