Air Supply

Firstly, Let me say, don't judge me.

I heard "All Out of Love" on the radio today and it reminded me of what great songwriters and Vocalists these guys were.

This is ultra light/soft, but I still consider it AOR nonetheless. 

I don't know if there have been any MHR covers of these tracks, but they're ripe for the picking.

Started as a three piece, third member was member was husband model/actress.Third member left before fame hit

They all met while playing in a production of Jesus Christ superstar.

I always thought of Air Supply as Elevator or Dentist Chair Rock, but I think Oilers categorisation has merits!

So funny you mention Air Supply. Couple of months ago these guys played a show up here in the Northern Colorado area, and one of my buddies, total hard rock, heavy metal guy, went to it, (for his wife he claims :)) and he said he wound up really liking the show. No I did not attend. Must admit though, they have a few catchy tunes. But only in moderation, let's not get crazy, now. LOL.

I've got their Greatest Hits CD.  Got it yeaaaaaaaaaaars ago through the BMG membership deal.  I definitely have to be in the mood for it but there's quality songs on there for sure and I enjoy it quite a bit.

Just "asking for a friend". But I can completely understand why you wouldn't want to admit it was you personally getting into Air Supply.

Many of the hard rock fans (DIO, Maiden, etc..) I know all have soft spots for Air Supply and ABBA.

 

I grew up with the 50's-70's A.M. Gold stuff before I discovered hard rock in 1983ish... everything from Elvis Presley to The Beatles to Dan Fogelberg to Bread to The Carpenters (I found them creepy once I found out they were brother and sister) to Del Shannon, etc... then I found The Eagles, Journey and Toto around 2nd grade. Then a classmate came into the 4th grade classroom and put on this album with a big metal mask on the school's record player (I went to catholic elementary School) and it took the nun from across the hall all of 15 seconds to come over snapping about that music.... too late... I was hooked

The Carpenters never bugged me but...

A few years ago, my wife and I went to see Bill Medley in concert.  Well, actually, we went to see Christopher Cross but Medley was the opening act.  Anyway I digress...

Medley performed "I've Had the Time of My Life" as you might expect.  And it was wonderful.  Except...the female duet parts were sung by his daughter.  THAT was a bit creepy.  

FWIW, Medley was incredible.  Puts on a wonderful show and sounds amazing.  Then again, so was Christopher Cross.  All in all, a tremendous concert.

I know the meaning of AOR is contentious, but I was referring to it as I've always considered it.

"Adult Orientated Rock".

I thought AOR stood for album oriented rock and originally referred to DJs playing deep tracks off albums, and not just singles. Could be wrong.

In the USA basically AM radio played the top 40 hits on their stations .

In the 1970's FM radio started playing songs off albums that weren't necessarily the hits.

I worked in music stores in the 1980s and read Billboard religiously and I've never once heard AOR referred to as "Adult Orientated Rock".  It's always been "Album Oriented Rock".

Edit: Wikipedia, at least, says it can be both.
