I don't have a problem with Tommy being in Kiss I just wish they'd create different makeup for him like they did for Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent.

 

I also wish they'd record a new album. They say nobody wants to hear a new Kiss album but I think there's enough diehards still around to sell 100,000 copies or so, which isn't great but it's not horrible in this day and age. You could even do a deal with Walmart and put it at a low price point and that would help even more like it has for Journey.

Great idea, but there's one flaw in it:

 

Gene Simmons would NEVER settle for a LOW price point.

Sorry to bring this up again, the better half out of the goodness of her heart bought me the latest issue of Classic Rock as something to read on what promises to be a long quiet bank holiday 12 hour night at work. I was pleased.....I opened it got past the news sections and the whole magazine is dedicated to ....wait for it "The 100 Greatest Rock Songs" ...compiled by the "experts". Oh sorry I didn't realise that there were experts in rock! I thought it was all subjective to your taste...where is Lester Bangs when you need him to put these prats in their places!!!

 

I really really cannot think of a more useless list. It's typical of this magazines lazy approach to journalism...what next??? rocks 100 greatest moustaches????

 

This takes up pages 31 to 65 .... prior to that its mainly ads and a smattering of features then afterwards on page 66 there's a quick Kim Fowley interview then it's onto the reviews section (and we all know about the value of Classic Rock reviews generally), SO A TOTAL OF 2 MAIN FEATURES! Value for money in anyones book I say.

 

I'm counting my blessings now that I cancelled my subscription. I only wish the missus had kept the receipt so I could return it as a faulty product!

I've never seen Classic Rock but this "list" phenomenon you describe sounds a lot like the piece of crap US mag "Hit Parader." Every time I see it on the magazine stand it's a "SPECIAL ISSUE" counting down the "100 Greatest Metal Bands," "100 Greatest Guitarists," "100 Greatest Vocalists," "100 Greatest Bands that Weren't In Our Last Greatest Bands Countdown," etc., etc.

Interesting trivia: Hit Parader was (dunno if it still is) published by the same company that published Charlton Comics ... those of you who know anything about comic books knows that Charlton had been a pretty major playa in the '50s and '60s but by the mid to late 70s they were pretty well inferior in nearly every way to the big guns like Marvel & DC... their comic book line was eventually was put out of its misery sometime in the mid-80s. They concentrated mostly on "genre" stuff (i.e. War comics, Westerns, adaptations of TV shows/kiddie cartoons, etc.) and only had a few superheroes, none of whom were really worth a crap. Towards the end of their existence, if you picked up a Charlton comic off the stands it was usually just a reprint of an issue from 20 years ago with a new cover on it....

 

...which was kinda how Hit Parader wrote their articles, too...by reprinting press releases.

If memory serves, they got in trouble back around late '97/early '98 when they published a big piece on KISS' "Psycho Circus" that stated that the album had "done well on the charts in its first week and was still selling well," ... but the album hadn't even been released yet when the article appeared. I just got the newest Classic Rock that's out in the states, the one with Kiss on the front.

My copy actually has Tommy Thayer on it, which is kind of cool.

For those that haven't seen the US mags they did the four different Mag covers, one for each member kind of like what Spin mag did back in 1996 for the reunion. I was a little shocked that Gene and Paul allowed Eric and Tommy to get their own covers.

I've got the issue with all four of them on the cover. A great CD with this issue...love the live version of Magnums 'Start Talking Love', also really liked 'Overload' by Uriah Heep - a band I've never deliberately gone and listened to...maybe I should? Pleased to see there wasn't a feature on Led Zeppelin this month...man I was really geting sick of Classic Rock's obsession with that band - every issue going on and on about them.

Yeah, I remember that ... whoopsie doodle indeed-io. But yeah, the story goes that Andy used to just write stories up and credit them to whatever name he came up with. The example always used was that if he were watching a baseball game he would take the first name of the pitcher and the last name of the first baseman and voila! a new staff writer was created.

Hahaha, y'know, I took a creative writing course in high school and that's exactly how I used to come up with character names for my stories. I'd go thru my baseball cards and go "First name from column A, last name from column B."

 

I also once wrote a short story in which all the characters were named after porn stars (Ron Jeremy, Jerry Butler, Christy Canyon, Joanna Storm, Barbara Dare, etc), just to see if anyone would notice. Nobody did.
