"In Like Flint" (1967)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZtFYLqs9nY

James Coburn stars as ultra-cool American secret agent Derek Flint in this obviously tongue-in-cheek, goofy James Bond spoof/ripoff from the late 60s. A secret organization of beautiful women wants to take over the world and Flint is the only spy who's man enough to handle all of 'em!!

Silly little flick with lots of eye candy, and Coburn is a hoot as the perpetually self-assured Flint. As spy parodies go this was way more fun than that piece of sh*t "Casino Royale" that I saw last week.

A SEPARATION (2011)

a foreign (Iranian) drama about two couples that's divorcing because the husband wants to dedicate his time taking care of his sick father while the wife wants their family to have the best and move out of the country. I think it's a decent movie that portrayed the reality, a real family issues, also the law that happened in that country, but not many deep plots involved, could be boring for some, but if you enjoy real-life drama like this, I guess it's a good one.

"Mimic" (1997)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL-GB11uyTI

Genetically-engineered insects, turned loose in the New York subways to combat a cockroach infestation, eventually mutate into human-sized flesh eaters in Guillermo Del Toro ("Pan's Labyrinth," "Hellboy")'s English language debut. Mira Sorvino and a team of scientists descend into the city's underbelly to combat the six-legged threat, and lots of guts and goop ensue. Sorta like a subterranean, urban "Alien." Cool stuff.

"The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ol-U0ibnVD4

The adventurous O'Connell clan (Brendan Fraser and Maria Bello) are back and battling more mummies, this time in post-WWII China, where their now grown-up son has inadvertently unleashed the spirit of a particularly nasty ancient Emperor.

This is a dumb but fun action/adventure just like the first two, owing much to the Indiana Jones franchise. It started getting reallly stupid by around the halfway mark (Yetis?) but the special effects were great and it certainly wasn't boring.

I liked this better than the 2nd "Mummy" mainly because they cast the O'Connell's son as an adult, therefore he was far less annoying than in "Mummy Returns," where he was an irritating little snot. Haha.

"Hanna" (2011)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj6zCJyTq2I

Artsy action thriller in which a teenage girl, raised in woodsy isolation and trained to be an assassin, learns of her origins when her "father's" employers come calling...to erase them both.

Some decent performances (Cate Blanchett is great as the bad guy), some neat mayhem but "Hanna" dragged on a bit too long and seems to be operating under the illusion that it's an "important" film of some kind. Not recommended.

thank you. I've thought about getting this a time or two but haven't. guess I'll let it pass by. I have KickAss and Rise of the Planet of the Apes here but will probably not get to watch them this weekend either. that is the good thing about Netflix. the good thing about RedBox is it is #1.50 per night. I get red box when I know I will have time to watch.

Your mileage may vary with "Hanna," fellas -- it had its moments, I guess, but overall it didn't do much for me.

It probably didn't help that the girl who played Hanna reminded me of an extremely irritating girl that I knew in college so maybe I just couldn't get past the "Damn, she looks just like Debra..." Hahaha.

Anyway, it's a rainy Saturday afternoon and I just watched this one with the kids:

"Monsters Vs. Aliens" (2009)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8Dh97BsbwY

Cartoon sci-fi comedy stars Reese Witherspoon as a bride-to-be who gets struck by a radioactive meteorite on her wedding day, causing her to grow to gigantic size. Captured by the government and dubbed "Ginormica," she becomes part of a super secret force of "monsters" who are needed to battle an alien invasion of Earth. Great animation, lots of action, and funny as hell. We all enjoyed this one and I'm usually not one for "kid flicks."

Prom Night (1980)

Had not seen this since the mid 80's and it was worse than I'd remembered, the acting was awful and the unnecessary extended dance scenes were dreadful, rubbish film.

TAKE SHELTER

Interesting psychological drama about a man who predicts a storm. A little slow, but very intriguing and worth sticking with for the ending (which is awesome).

THE WHISTLEBLOWER (2011)

a drama/thriller about Kathryn Bolkovac (played by Rachel Weisz) who works for UN as peacekeeper in Bosnia only to find that many of his fellow UN mates were participating in human trafficking and sex slavery. This truth blowing led her to her dismissal and many of the suspicious actors were also dismissed but not prosecuted. It's frightening and sad to see the reality especially the victims of war, after suffering the loss of family, they had to go such a terrible and painful reality of being slaves. This is quite similar to the movie 'Human Trafficking'. Good movie!

That sounds really interesting. I'll have to check it out, not least because I've spent quite a bit of time in Bosnia and have a few friends there.

Plus it has Rachel Weisz in it! :quagmire:

oh you've been to Bosnia ? for work purpose ?

yeah good movie although it left a hole in my heart, thinking of an old Maiden song 'the evil that men do lives on and on', i guess it will never stop :(

Yeah, I worked in Bosnia once for 3 months and then again for 3.5 months. I had a great time - 4 weeks was spent up in the mountains running training courses, which was fantastic. Went sledging at lunch time a few times, how good is that? Sarajevo is a great city too.

It is sad what people will do to each other. Some psychopaths will always rise to the top, especially in times of adversity. As a species, we're very broken!

Finally watched this on Friday night. Very good film, but brutal, shocking and as a result utterly depressing. Just unbelievable that the perpetrators have never faced justice. I'd really love to meet some of these cowardly scum.

I recommend the film though, it is a real eye-opener and I can't stop thinking about it.

The Sitter

I thought this was pretty funny.

"Make love to the night, mothafucka!" might just be the quote of the year.

Jennifer's body

Any good?

I recorded this one a couple of weeks ago, still haven't had time to watch it. The wife and I caught a bit of it on FX Network and saw just enough to go "Woo, this looks nuts. We gotta see the whole thing," so I taped it when it re-ran the next day.

I rather enjoyed it as well. Kind of reminded me of a new version of Adventures In Babysitting, w/o Elizabeth Shue.

That beginning scene where he's going down on his "girlfriend" and the dialogue that ensues is pretty hilarious.

And I concur that dialogue with Suga Baby is sweet.

ANd yes Keith Jennifer's Body is a good Fright Night-ish kind of comedy horror flick, you should appreciate it.

TORA! TORA! TORA! (1970)

i'm extremely impressed with this movie, i honestly do, because considering the time of the year, the visual effect is really stunning. It's even better than some of the modern movies of the 80s or 90s that you can really see the fake action. And most of the characters here had great acting, the emotion, the fear, the tension, everything were well acted, kudos for this movie! For those who love war movies and would like to know the great details of the Pearl Harbour attack, I think this one is a must watch.

"Casino Royale" (2006)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LozaiZBdji0

Daniel Craig's first turn as James Bond is a "reboot" to the long running spy series. Bond has just received his "00" rank and in between chasing bad guys around the globe, sparring with his superior officer "M" and romancing his lovely contact Vesper Lynd, his mission includes a high stakes poker game against a big time arms dealer, "Le Chiffre."

Craig's Bond is much more of a bad-ass than any of his predecessors and though the grim-n-gritty tone of the film took a little getting used to after all the Roger Moore installments I've watched lately, I have to admit that this was one heckuva cool movie. Next up: "Quantum of Solace."

Man, it's Megan Fox in it. ;) Btw it's an okay movie - blood, humour, sex with some cool, atmospheric camera work. I enjoyed it.
