Have many people here read this novel by Bret Easton Ellis? I know Terry also states it as his favourite book and I have to say that pages into it I'd already labelled it mine. Having now finished it I can say without doubt it's the best read I've encountered. The way it glides effortlessly from routine normality to completely brutal violence and pornography is just a dream come true to me. It's like the novel I would and should have written myself a few years ago if I were not a pussy. I've read some delightful books, but for me this just took storytelling to a whole new level.

Any other fans? Haters? Who's read this book?

Also, for those who have read the book and seen the movie, how did that go for you? I watched the movie about 10 years ago and I love it. I watched it again after the book and it's totally different. Obviously it is an amazing challenge to cram hour upon hour of reading time into a one and a half hour movie, but I think that, aside from it appearing "rushed" perhaps, it is still a cool film. But it must be said it pales amazingly compared to the book.

I didn't read the book but thought that Christian Bale was exceptional in the movie.

Yeah, he was good, but not as exceptional as the real Patrick Bateman (from the novel).

Haven't read the book or seen the movie but I love the Misfits album by the same name.

Funny info from wikipedia:

In Australia, the book is sold shrink-wrapped and is classified "R18" under national censorship legislation. The book may not be sold to those under 18 years of age, or criminal prosecution may result. Along with other Category 1 publications, its sale is theoretically banned in the state of Queensland. In Brisbane, the novel is available to those over 18 from all public libraries and can still be ordered and purchased (shrink-wrapped) from many book stores despite this prohibition.[citation needed] At the University of Queensland, the book is only available to students over 18, and is stored where it is not accessible to the public.

Hmmm, I just read the synopsis on Wiki.

Since I am totally lovin' the Dexter TV series I might find American Psycho a perfect fit as winter is just around the corner.

Yeah, my wife was asking if it's like 'Dexter' at all. I think we're both disappointed we didn't get the chance to follow that show from the start. :( As for similarities - yeah, they're both serial killers.

I've got the book somewhere but have never read it. LOVED the film, one of my all-time faves, but you're got me interested in the book now....

Dood, you must read it. I think you'd love it.

Highvoltage, would be very interested to hear your thoughts on it. My wife was interested too but I honestly think she'd be quite taken aback by it. It's far from a 'girl power' type of book, that's sure as hell.

Great book, great movie.

Picked up the movie on blu-ray after years of the standard dvd. Considering the tight budget and the lack of big names (they weren't big at the time of production anyway) I think the movie turned out excellent. Now, if you'd excuse me, I have to go and return some video tapes.

Read the book years ago and love it,a real page turner that slaps you in the face with it's full on brutality and really puts you in the mind of a serial killer.Still have to see the movie.
