Yeah, 'I saw red' is great. 'Brandon' is horrific and although I don't know the Van Halen song, I am sure it's awful too.

As for my own choices, that'd take a long time to figure out. Maybe one day. ;)

I Saw Red, great track!

Without You by Vain. Used to love it but I skip it Everytime now. Otherwise a flawless album. It's just too sappy, too long, too slow. Weird as I love every ballad on Move On It!

Holy shit theres some craaaaazy comments in this thread....first I Saw Red, now Without You....which is at least a 9/10 for me....maybe slightly overlong.

I did say I loved it. It made it to many a mix tape for the ladies. I guess we grew apart!

I know a lot of people here won't agree, but one hard rock ballad that still gets a decent amount of radio airplay down here is a song that i CANNOT! stand.

Poison - Every rose has it's thorn.

I've never been able to tolerate Bret Michael's "douchebaggery".

I'm with you on this one ... there was a time when every local band I went to see would play it ... now, if I never heard it again, it would be too soon!

'I Saw Red' is a fantastic song!

One of the worst ballads for me has to be Extreme's 'More Than Words' ... can't stand it ...

Pretty much any Bon Jovi ballad has me reaching for the 'off' switch or the 'skip' button ... I can't really explain why, as I DO genuinely like Bon Jovi ... there's just something about the ballads ...

'Without you' by Vain - I love it. I was probably the reverse. Didn't love it immediately, and it is very long, but jeez I love that song. So goddamn moody, that tune.

Bon Jovi ballads - love 'em up to and including the 'These Days' album. They always had great ballads, imo. Now they're mostly awful.

'Every Rose Has It's Thorn' by Poison. It's a tricky one. I do love the song, but it is one of the more overplayed songs out there... even if it's not massive at all on Aussie radio... but it does get around still.

Haha!

See, now, I love that song. It's one of my theme songs. I've been betrayed and lied to a lot in my life, so I've become a man of action. Words don't mean a thing to me if you won't back it up. It's why I ended my last relationship. But I get that the song has been played to death for the last 25 years. I don't listen to radio, though, so I never noticed.

Every Rose is terrible.

There's something about Always by Bon Jovi that gets me. Great song.

I dig More Than Words as well as To Be With You. I remember at the time there was the anti-power ballad thing going on and it was starting to worry me.

Then you've got Is This Love. Musically it's so bad, well not bad but it could be by any other artist at the time... but Coverdale was just fkn awesome back then!

The prog metal bands have some great ones. I got into Damian Wilson because of Threshold's Extinct Instinct. Love the 2 ballads Forever and Clear!

Does Magnum's 'Les Morts Dansant' count as a ballad? LOVE that song ...

Dokken's 'Alone Again' has to be one of my all time favourite ballads.

This is one of my fav ballads from that era.

One of my all-time faves too. Never seen that clip, but I love it. Very, very cool. And then I think of what this band became after 'Animals...' :(

Here are three that I think are crap from bands I like

1. Wigelius - There Is No Me Without You

2. Queensryche - Silent Lucidity (it's not terrible, but I skip it every time)

3. Any Wig Wam ballad except for Bygone Zone

The OP specified 80's bands, so I refrained from posting my actual favourite ballad.

    • Really like that, hope there's a new album in the works
    • Don't believe they fell out , he just joined The Sweet I think and with their blessing? Think doing it on Diamonds would have sufficed...end that chapter of the band and onto the next.
    • but then again I didn't really have high hopes on it...hopes yes...but not high if I'm honest.
    • Video for 'Change The World'.
    • Be interested to hear this...after all of this time.
    • New album 'Another World' out June 21. Press release: Atlantic was the brainchild of guitarist and songwriter Simon Harrison. Following a successful ghost-writing career and his bands Stranger and Wisht, Simon wanted to make an album in his favoured AOR/Melodic Rock genre. Heavily influenced by bands like Whitesnake, Journey, Bad English, FM and Dare he set about writing the songs that became the first album entitled ‘Power’. Atlantic was never supposed to be a long term band and following its worldwide release Simon moved on to other writing, recording, production and mix projects. In the late nineties Simon met Mark Grimmett. He recorded several songs with Mark over the following few years and they decided at some point they would make a record together. Fast forward to 2021 Mark was talking to Simon about writing and recording a new album. Originally entitled the MGB Band, work started in the fall of 2021 … By early 2022 they had written a number of songs and they both felt they would best suit a new album under the Atlantic banner. Several members of Grim Reaper were recruited to give the Album an edge, whilst retaining the essential melodic rock/Aor feel that is Atlantic. Mark Pullin, Julian D.Hill and Ian Nash were duly recruited into the band along with keyboardist Gareth David Noon from Serpentine .. The lineup was to change later in the project with Simon and Tim Bristow taking over the keyboard role and the addition of Nick Burr and Andy Margrett on lead guitar. Work continued over the next year and finally the production was completed in late 2023. Mark Pullin stepped up to mix the album after some unforeseen issues at Simon’s studio and it was completed in March 2024. Escape Music had re released the original Power album and were absolutely the first choice to work with on the new album. Their new album “Another World” will be released exclusively by Escape Music, exciting times. The band is: Simon Harrison – Guitars, Bass & Keyboards Mark Grimmett – Lead Vocals Mark Pullin – Drums, Backing Vocals Nick Burr – Lead Guitar Julian D.Hill – Bass Tim Bristow – Keyboards Gareth David Noon – Additional Keyboards / Andy Margrett – Additional Lead Guitar / Mark Pullin – Additional Lead Guitar All songs written by Simon Jewell-Harrison & Mark Grimmett Except * Co-Written by Tim Bristow. • Not a fan of Staind, but this song popped up in my YouTube feed and the lyrics just hit me right in the heart this morning.    Beautiful ballad in my opinion…
    • It's ok but at the same time not doing much for me.  To me this sounds like this could've been a modern Bon Jovi song.  If you're basically making music that sounds like Bon Jovi, why not just go back to Bon Jovi lol. As it is, Richie's solo stuff has never really grabbed me and don't see myself returning to this. Do plan to check out the Bon Jovi documentary on Hulu this weekend though
    • That chorus is much more melodic than I was expecting; not bad.
