A couple from Rock Candy being released on November 26th

DIRTY LOOKS - Turn Of The Screw (remastered)

Format: CD
Cat: CANDY 461
Released: 26 Nov 21

Fully Remastered Audio / America Riff-Rockers Acclaimed Second Album For Atlantic Records / Produced By John Jansen (Billy Squier, Britny Fox) / Includes ‘Nobody Rides For Free’, ‘Slammin To The Big Beat’ & ‘Turn Of The Screw’ / 16 Page Full-Colour Booklet, 4,000 Word Essay With New Interviews, Enhanced Artwork & Previously Unseen Photos - THERE WAS NO Doubt That Dirty Looks Meant Business With The Release Of Their Debut Album For Atlantic Records In 1988. The Album Was A Boiling Cauldron Of Big Riffs And Serious Hooks Placing The Band Right Next To Such Classic Four-To-The-Floor Purveyors Of Simple, Dirty Rock ‘N’ Roll Such As AC/DC And Krokus. Not Only Did They Have The Riffs To Compete But In Frontman Henrik Ostergard They Had A Character That Was Larger Than Life, Crafting Lyrics To Reinforce His Tough Guy Bravado. Unknowingly They Had Crafted One Of The Era’s Greatest Albums That Although Registering With Fans And Some Well-Informed Critics Strangely Failed To Set The World On Fire. Atlantic Records However Were Not Disheartened And Signalled The Go Ahead For A Follow-Up Album. Issued In 1989 And Titled ‘Turn Of The Screw’, The Band Moved On To A New Producer In John Jansen (Billy Squier, Britny Fox) And Set About Recording In New York At The World-Renowned Power Station Studios. A Previous Attempt To Record In Los Angeles With Producer Of The Moment Beau Hill Had Been Abandoned So The Pressure Was On To Deliver A Solid Follow Up. Behind The Scenes It Appears That Certain, Unsubstantiated, Machinations Were Working To Hint That Henrik Was Being Earmarked To Collaborate With AC/DC, Something That Has Never Been Fully Looked At Until Now. ‘Turn Of The Screw’ It Must Be Said, Is Another Righteous Stab At Full-Frontal Riff Rock Packed With Some Great And Catchy Tunes Such As ‘Take What Ya Get’, ‘Slammin To The Big Beat’, The Title Track And Anthem ‘Nobody Rides For Free’. It’s Another Enormous Tribute To Simple But Effective Loud And Proud Hard Rock.

Track Listing: Turn Of The Screw (Who’s Screwing You); Nobody Rides For Free; C’Mon Frenchie; Take What Ya Get; Hot Flash Jelly Roll; Slammin’ To The Big Beat; L.A. Anna; Always A Loser; Love Screams; Go Away; Have Some Balls

LYNCH MOB - Lynch Mob (remastered)

Format: CD
Cat: CANDY 463
Released: 26 Nov 21

Fully Remastered Audio / Guitar master George Lynch hits back with sophomore Lynch Mob release / Co-Produced by Keith Olsen (Whitesnake, Scorpions) / Includes ‘Jungle Of Love’, ‘Cold Is The Heart’ & ‘Tangled In The Web’ / 16 page full-colour booklet, 4,000 word essay with new interviews & enhanced artwork - THE DEBUT LYNCH Mob album ‘Wicked Sensation’ certainly turned a few heads. Produced by Max Norman, the record made no excuses for its rock solid blues based swagger that pivoted the band in the same direction as Whitesnake, Led Zeppelin and Free… not a million miles removed in fact from guitarist George Lynch’s previous band Dokken. All was shaping up well for album #2 but there were changes afoot. Vocalist Oni Logan had stepped away from the project leaving the spot open for another fine blues-based howler. Casting around for a suitable replacement, the band identified an excellent, but relatively unknown, replacement by the name of Robert Mason. This time around the band opted to dispense with the services of their previous producer and turn to Keith Olsen instead. Keith’s track record was stellar; having produced massive hit records for Whitesnake and the Scorpions amongst many others. It also paved the way for a slight shift in direction from their core blues rock style to a far more malleable and melodic hard rock sound, something that optimised Mason’s voice perfectly. Emboldened by an impressive collection of tracks, the record sat competitively amongst their peer groups but times were changing. Grunge was now taking centre stage leaving groups like Lynch Mob to struggle but that was no reflection of the music’s quality. ‘Lynch Mob, issued in 1992, showcased a band with lots to say and a point to make. Songs such as ‘Jungle Of Love’, ‘No Good’ and especially ‘Tangled In The Web’ hit home with maximum impact and the potential to become anthems if only the marketplace hadn’t shifted so dramatically. Of course, once again, George Lynch’s guitar playing was exceptional and impressive.

Remasterd from funnily enough...Bad Reputation Records

DIRTY WHITE BOY - BAD REPUTATION

DIRTY WHITE BOY

DIRTY WHITE BOY have the distinction of being the band formed by the axe slinger to the stars Earl Slick.

Although initial reports suggested that ex-Heavy Pettin’ vocalist Steve Hayman was working with Earl Slick, the group was eventually fronted by ex-Giuffria vocalist David Glen Eisley. He joined former Autograph drummer Keri Richards and the rather lesser known bassist F. Kirk Alley, the quartet arriving in a blaze of glory during 1990 with their debut album “Bad Reputation”, a record of undoubted quality.

Sadly Dirty White Boy only ever did this one album but is it a corker.  This quartet rocked big time with plenty of slide guitar courtesy of Earl Slick.  Eisley’s vocals are suitably gruff for this lean and dirty rock ‘n’ roll – ‘Lazy Crazy’ being a prime example. ‘Let’s Spend Momma’s Money’ is a real rock ‘n’ roll stomper with a nice honky-tonk piano riff going on in the background. Then its ‘lighters in the air’ time for ‘You Give Me Love’ – just how a ballad should be done, soaring heartfelt vocals, guitar solo midway through and a nice heart tugging lyric. They came out just as hair/glam metal was peaking and bands like Guns ‘N’ Roses were the big thing in rock music, the perfect market for this album. Dirty White Boy should have been bigger than they were and a real shame they didn’t second a second album.

Next new Reissues/Remastered from Bad Reputation...two goodies

Firstly...

BEGGARS & THIEVES

BEGGARS & THIEVES

Beggars & Thieves is a band initially made up of lead vocalist Louie Merlino, guitarist Ron Mancuso, bassist Phil Soussan, and drummer Bobby Borg. Phil Soussan and Bobby Borg left after the band’s first album and after some light touring, and they are pictured on the album sleeve/liner notes and credited as having played on it. They released a video for the song "Beggars & Thieves" from their first album. After that album, Beggars & Thieves went through some personnel changes. Soussan left to put together a band and write for long time friend Vince Neil's first solo project and Borg left the band. Mancuso, Merlino and producer Barbiero decided to carry on without them. In 1991, a new three-person lineup was formed—one that consisted of Louie Merlino on lead vocals, Mancuso on both bass and guitar and newcomer Bobby Chouinard on drums. And it was also in 1991 that Beggars & Thieves left Atlantic and signed with Epic.

ALBUM

American melodic rock band Beggars & Thieves released their self-titled debut in 1990. As huge as this kind of arena rock was in 1990, Beggars & Thieves went largely unnoticed, which is a real shame when you consider just how good this album is.Like Von Groove and Tyketto, Beggars & Thieves was one of those lesser-known melodic rock bands that had a lot more to offer than the average Hollywood hair band. They shared the same focus on big hooks and catchy melodies, but they opted for polished love songs with real heart instead of spandex and sleaze (not that there's anything wrong with those). Well-written songs like "Isn't It Easy," "No More Broken Dreams" and "Heaven & Hell," infectious melodies and Louie Merlino's strong, clear vocals make this album stand out, and make it an album that you'll keep coming back to year after year. While the band has been sporadically active over the last two decades, the party was pretty much over after this album. The world moved on, and radio and MTV decided we didn't want to hear this kind of music anymore. If you're a fan of the late `80s and pre-grunge `90s melodic rock sound, and still love bands like Tyketto, Von Groove, Giant, Kiss of the Gypsy, Bad English and Damn Yankees, the Beggars & Thieves debut is a must-have album.

and Secondly...

McQUEEN STREET -McQUEEN STREET

McQUEEN STREET

McQueen Street was formed in Montgomery, Alabama in 1987 by Derek & Chris Welsh. Michael Cummings (Powers) joined the band and became the lead guitarist shortly thereafter. They toured throughout the southeast United States and did so well that they acquired a record deal from SBK Records, a division of EMI. After releasing their debut album, “McQueen Street” in 1991, produced by well-known Tom Werman, hit song “In Heaven” peaked at #32 on the Billboard Rock charts and #1 on the European rock charts. The album also included hit single “Time”. Also, “My Religion” did well on MTV’s own Headbangers Ball. At this point, it seemed like nothing could stop the band. But unfortunately, the grunge evolution came pouring in right at McQueen Street’s peak, and just before the release of their long-expected second album, the band parted ways. Drummer Chris Welsh passed away due to viral sickness shortly after. The phone started ringing when the singer of Puddle of Mudd decided to wear a McQueen Street “Stick It” shirt in the “She Hates Me” video. Following a 10-year hiatus, singer Derek Welsh released “McQueen Street 2” with Ring of Four Records. The album included fan favorites such as “World Machine”, “Bad Moon”, and “What About Jane?”. In 2018, Derek Welsh began writing for the third McQueen Street album. As of 2020, McQueen Street has released two new songs, "Outside In" and "One Way Ticket". The latter of which reached #1 on the underground rock charts.

McQueen Street is one of those albums that you play in your car with the windows rolled down. This album deserved a hell of a lot more credit than what it got and is definitely worth checking out!

From Cherry Red Records...4CD

4857c528-e559-3977-f86f-c01065a85365.jpg

First four albums from Glasgow’s Strangeways who took their musical cues from across the pond, making melodic AOR style-rock inspired by bands such as Loverboy, Foreigner, Night Ranger and Journey.

Covering their output from 1985 to 1994 with a host of bonus tracks, live and demos.

Formed in 1985 by brothers Ian Stewart (guitar) and David Stewart (bass), joined by Jim Drummond (drums) and singer Tony Liddell, they released their critically-acclaimed self-titled debut album in 1985. Produced by Kevin Elson ( Lynyrd Skynyrd, Journey and Mr Big), they were championed by Kerrang! whose rave review reckoned that, “‘Breakin’ Down The Barriers’ has American Number One hit single written all over its baby face,” assuring us that, “This band still possess that unmistakably British flavour… I predict a big success.” And if that wasn’t enough, it confidently proclaimed that it was, “the greatest and most preciously perfect AOR album of all time”.

American Terry Brock replaced Tony Liddell as vocalist, joining Dave Munch Moore on keyboards for the John Punter-produced ‘Native Sons’ in 1987, arguably their greatest commercial success.

The same line-up released the third album ‘Walk In Fire’ in 1989. Featuring the single ‘Every Time You Cry’, the album was co-produced by guitarist Ian Stewart with John Lee and mixed by Mike Shipley ( Whitesnake, The Cars, Def Leppard).

The story on this collection ends with fourth album, ‘And The Horse’, from 1994, by which time guitarist Ian Stewart had also taken on lead vocal duties.

TRUE ROMANCE

THUNDER IN THE NIGHT

The first iteration of what would become Blue Tears began in the fall of 1982, when Gregg Fulkerson (lead guitar), was a senior at Chester County High School and Mike Spears (bass), Bryan Hall (rhythm guitar) and Phil Johns were students at Freed Hardeman University. The band was originally called Misfit. Through the next several years the band had a couple of name changes (NonStop, Sahara) and several vocalists and drummers came and went.

The band made several recordings in Gregg's basement, but the first official recording was of their song "Stay With Me" which was recorded at the Castle Recording Studios in Nashville, TN. "Stay With Me" received much regional radio station airplay, and peaked at #2 on 92.3 FM Jackson, TN. The combination of radio airplay, devoted fans and multiple sold out concerts at the Paramount and Malco theaters caught the attention of record industry professionals. One of these recordings landed on the desk of a Los Angeles-based record company. They signed a recording contract with MCA Records soon after. The band also changed their name to Blue Tears just two months prior to releasing their debut album.

Blue Tears was made up of founding members Gregg Fulkerson, Mike Spears and Bryan Hall. They were re-joined by Charlie Lauderdale on drums.

The debut album was released in June 1990 with lead single "Rockin' With the Radio" getting a music video. A second single, "Innocent Kiss" also received heavy promotion. The album was originally titled "Thunder in the Night" and was promoted as such but was eventually changed to a self-titled release. Unfortunately, the band was dismissed as just another Glam Metal act in that genres fading wave.

Blue Tears entered the studio in 1991 and banged out new tracks for a second album. The tracks included "Long Way Home", "Kisses In The Dark", "With You Tonight", "Follow Your Heart", and "Summer Girl". However, due to the popularity of the grunge genre and MTV's revamp, MCA decided to not release the follow up album. But the never released tracks would eventually be released, along with some of Fulkerson's solo cuts, almost 15 years later.

Ooh! Gonna have to get this. Too much bonus material to pass up.

I can't remember if I own this, or just downloaded it years ago. Def will have to check. If this had some bonus tracks I'd repurchase.

Has anyone bought from Bad Reputation label? Are they good quality? There are a couple of their reissues I am interested in. I notice they are a French label. The albums I think look interesting are the Great White and China reissues that both come with a bonus live cd.

I'm probably not the best one to answer this question but here goes...

I haven't ordered directly from the label yet, but I did pick up the Firehouse and Kik Tracee reissues through Amazon.  If you want to know more about the mixes I can't really help you because I don't have originals to compare them too, so all I can say is they sound great to me.  From my experience they come in a standard 2CD jewel case, all four of the discs were silver pressed, and the booklets were of nice quality and substantial.  The Firehouse reissue for instance has all of the lyrics, band credits and pictures, etc with some background art.  It was the same for Kik Tracee except it didn't have lyrics for the bonus EP disc.

Overall I would recommend, I've been surprised by both of mine and I don't see why their other reissues would be any different!  If you haven't checked already, the discogs page for the Great White reissue has scans of the booklet if you want to get a general read on what you'll be getting if you decide to purchase.

I have the China disc and it sounds excellent, have picked up a few from them over the years from Danger Danger,Kingdom Come,Lion,Shark Island & Wildside .The label was originally called Axe Killer Records, back then they released House Of Lords,XYZ & Icon to name a few, recently I've picked up Beggars & Thieves,McQueen Street,Dirty White Boy,Jagged Edge & House Of Lords Demons Down,I even have the Giant Last Of The Runaways disc from them in 2010 that is spelt Last Ot The Runaways on the side ,it has it takes two E.P as bonus tracks :)all sound good to me and are an upgrade from my original releases from way back in the day.

I suppose different peoples opinions vary with them just like Rock Candy for instance from the sound perspective,Haven't had a problem myself,in fact I preordered the Blue Tears disc yesterday...even though I just bought the Japan HR/HM100 disc last month  :)

Bad Reputation release 31st March...doesn't seem to be any bonus tracks...as of yet

SLEEZE BEEZ - SCREWED,BLUED & TATTOOED

Sleeze Beez is like the kid next door who basically lives rock and roll to the fullest extent. Sleeze Beez is like the kid who bugs the shit out of his mother to buy him his first guitar, goes to buy the guitar and there’s four other guys doing the same thing.  They just got together and it was magic. In a unique twist, Chriz Van Jaarsveld (guitar) and Jan Koster (drums) managed to talk their way into a record deal before a band was even formed. In order to start recording, a band was thrown together featuring Don Van Spall (guitar), Ed Jongsma (bass) and vocalist Tiger. The debut album Look Like Hell was only released regionally in 1987, but Sleeze Beez were beginning to make people take notice. Sleeze Beez managed to fuse the sounds of AC/DC and Def Leppard to create their own unrelenting brand of hard rock and they needed to recruited a new singer. The four Amsterdam Rockers, during the recording of what would become Screwed Blued & Tattooed, replaced front man Tiger by Andrew Elt (ex-Gin on The Rocks) and Sleeze Beez were poised for success. Atlantic Records snatched up the group, got the band considerable airplay for the single “Stranger Than Paradise” and had the boys opening for Skid Row. What you saw, it was what you got with Sleeze Beez. There was no lipstick, just sweat and rock, they just went by their animal instincts. The animal instance is definitively one of the factors that makes the band stand out from the rest. Jan and Andrew handled the songwriting honors for the band. The title track, “Screwed Blued ‘n Tattoed” could be compare to a wet dream. They got the title from and Eddie Murphy movie called “Best Defense” when he was sitting in a tank with two Iranians and he said “well guys, it looks like we’re screwed, blued and tattoed”. That basically sumed it up. “When The Brains Go To The Balls” will remain one of the best song titles by any group in this genre. This rocking tune is as tongue in cheek as you can get. This song put them as a band in a nutshell. “Girls Girls Nasty Nasty” is dedicated to all the girls who went to the show and wanted to get a piece of the band, but as well all the guys who went to the show and wanted to get a piece of the girls. “Screwed Blued ‘n Tattooed” contained something for everybody and it reached #115 on Billboard’s Top 200. The future looked so bright in 1990…
