Pittsburgh vs Green Bay

Super Bowl XLV

Sunday, February 6, 2011, 6pm EST

Dallas, TX

The game should be fun. Can I interest you in a small friendly wager?

If the Steelers win you pick a CD from my trade list and I'll ship it to you. If the Packers win, I pick one from yours.

I have been thinking about this thread all day and thanks Jeff for starting it, an excellent idea and well being a Steeler fanatic ensures acceptance...

I was thinking, sure is silly to just post up 1 cd, when a 1/2 dozen without cases fits in the same bubble mailer and costs the same...

Are you sure you can find 6 cd's on my trade list you actually want?

Take a look and let me know. If so, since my blood flows green & gold, I accept! :drink:

Already planned out the evening, few beers at my mates local then round his place for the match! Not in work the next day either .... Aces.

Bit concerned though....usually when the Steelers are in the Superbowl I have to have a bowl of homemade colslaw and beer! Might have to forgoe the coleslaw this year!!!!

Some trash talkin' goin' on....I like it, I LIKE it!!!

Side note related to the game. The local sports talk show has been going off Monday and Tuesday wondering how the Packers can be favored by 2-3.5 points. They think it should be a 'pickem'...and I probably agree. Steelers have been there done that a few times recently and the Packers have a young team with only 2 guys that have ever been to a Super Bowl. Anyway, late yesterday they said some theories are starting to surface that the mob actually placed a ton of money on the Packers which made Vegas put the Packers as favorites...then come near the game, the mob will put MORE money on the Steelers as they actually feel the Steelers will win. I guess it is a common practice. I dunno, take it for what it's worth. ...and Nick, I am glad I won't be anywhere near you if coleslaw and beer is on your menu. :quagmire:

Well Terry, just think, at this time a week from now one of us will be elated and one of us will be deflated. Either way, I plan to be toasted.

Time for my Super Bowl predictions:

Final

Green Bay 27

Pittsburgh 23

MVP

Aaron Rodgers, 350 yds, 3 TD

Receiving High

Greg Jennings - 125 yds, TD

Rushing High

Rashard Mendenhall - 60 yds, TD

Turning Point

With the score tied at 17 late in the third, Aaron Rodgers scrambles and finds James Jones deep down the sideline for a TD.

Ok, Terry, what do you have?

By the way, Peter King picked the Steelers....that's like the kiss of death you know. ;)

Fortunately, I don't pay any attention to any of the off the feild hype. No ESPN or the like for me so I miss out on all that.

The Steelers scare the shite out of me when they play, cause I just don't know what team is coming. When they are hitting on all cylinders, there isn't a team in the league that can touch them. If they are sucking wind then the 4th quarter is always a nail biter to see if they will edge out the other team in some final second play or succumb to the agony of defeat...

I've enjoyed watching Aaron Rodgers blossom into a good QB and become a good leader of the Packers after Favres departure.

My 2 cents: the Packers don't have it to beat the Steelers. I beleive that Ben & Company will come out and be playing the game of their careers. MIke Wallace will catch them all, Hines Ward will as always be amazing, Heath Miller will get his usual 50 first down catches and a couple of TD's, Mendenhall will get in another 100 plus.

On defense: Woodley, Kessell, Harrison and friends will reak havoc on Aaron Rodgers, with hurries and sacks and interceptions OH MY! Troy P will get a pick and score and the performance and Superbowl victory will be an amazing send off to Hall Of Famer Dick LeBeau. Even though one will hope he doesn't retire...And MIke Tomlin is amped up with the eye of the tiger for his 2nd ring as a new/youngest head coach.

Score:

Pittsburgh-42

Green Bay-10 (Being late scores once the cheerleaders come in to play for Pitt)

Big hope is that the officiating is not skewed. HOPEFULLY they will call a fair, actual and educated game...

Holy Moses, 42-10??? Where is just the little bit of luv for the green and gold?

Well, I have to counter after that prediction. Let's see...

I like our pro bowl corner Tramon Williams against Wallace. Assuming the 2009 DPoY Charles Woodson is usually disguising blitzes around the line of scrimage from the slot, I suppose we will have rookie Sam Shields on Ward. Ward is physical so maybe they will put Tramon on him as he is physical as well. Miller...normally he would concern me a bit more than usual since we lost our best cover LB to IR mid-season, BUT the LB core has shut down Tony Gonzalez and Greg Olson (twice) in recent weeks. Mendenhall could pose a problem. We have had Cullen Jenkins back on the line for the past few games, BJ Raji has only been getting better and Ryan Pickett is full strength....they held Matt Forte (twice) and Michael Turner in check. I am figuring Clay Matthews will have his motor at the usual high RPM to get some pressure on Ben. They need to tackle him...last year in Pittsburgh I read they should have had him 12 times but were only able to sack him 5 times.

On offense, I like the in doors, fast track for our receivers, the spread offense. I am not too familar with where Pittsburgh ranks versus the run but Green Bay has only recently formed a modest running game anyway.

Green Bay has the hunger for a first Super Bowl (only 2 players on the team have ever been to the SB, both on the losing end)

Pittsburgh has the huge edge in SB experience

I suppose one could argue anything can happen after kick off, if Green Bay makes a few mistakes, but even so, I don't see the game getting out of hand like that either way.

As to the refs, well, they were horrible during the regular season, but I have not had much to complain about in the playoffs, so hopefully they are in the background anyway.

fellow STEELER fan here. die hard for over 30 years. doubel edge sword is that the Steelers are #1 against the run. No one runs on the Steelers. that is the good side of the sword. the bad side is that this will put the game in Rogers hands and he can be deadly. I hope for a grind it out, in your face 9:00 minute opening drive by the Steelers then let Mike Wallace burn down field a few times.

Pitt - 35

GB - 28

Don't get me wrong Jeff, I do love me some Packers, have been going out of my way not to inadvertently wear a Packers t-shirtlast week and this. Course I love me the Steelers a lot lot more. :)

If Pitt wasn't in the game I'd be for GB for sure, but that said, I think Pitt is going to go into the big game with every intention of dominating. They are playing some of there best football this year, even with some key players injured and playing or just plain out. Troy P has not been as threatening this year and has been nursing an achillies injury, fortunately he is practicing currently, so he will play.

I am so amped about Sunday, I can hardly wait for kick off.

Either way the game is going to be a great one, but I still feel that the Steelers are going in more than ready and they are going to play the level of ball they played in the first half against NY. Of course I anticipate they will carry that level throught the 2nd half as well.

Interesting enough, the Milwaukee Journal online blog had an article saying that the Steeler fans were more than respectful when it comes to the Green Bay Packers. The blog shared some emails from the Pittsburgh fans who basically said if it weren't the Pittsburgh against the Packers for the Super Bowl, they really sorta don't mind the Packers (I'm paraphrasing).

I'm pretty amped myself, of course I have been pretty much amped for a month now since this little playoff road trip started. The closer they got each week the more cranked I get. I cannot wait for it to start so I can begin getting some better sleep!

My prediction:

Midway through the fourth quarter with the score 20 to 17 in favor of the Packers.. As Rapensberger goes back to heave a pass, he is hit by Matthews and clearly fumbles the ball and it is recovered by Green Bay. Of course the Steelers want the play reviewed... the verdict.. Arm going forward... incomplete pass...Steelers keep the ball.

As the same drive continues... Rapensberger heaves a pass deep down field into the end zone. "Oh.. imagine that... a flag". And the call is pass interference and the ball will be placed on the one yard line. Two plays later Mendenhall takes the ball into the end zone with about 1:34 left in the game. Extra point is good.

Final Score:

STEELERS - 24

PACKERS - 20

Just saw on the local news that GB is a 3 point favorite...

Dave, play nice. :aw:

Last week there were news "theories" that the mob figures Pittsburgh will win so they have skewed it by initially betting tons of money on the Packers. The effect was Vegas moving the Packers to win by a few points. THen the mob plans to bet even more money late in the week on Pittsburgh. I have no clue if that could be true or not...how much money would you have to bet in order to change the odds?

Anyway, I think this game should be a "pickem". I think the Packers are playing well, match up well and have every chance to win this game but I'm not sure why they are favored on a neutral field.

Moving the line happens all the time in Vegas. Besides groups, like the Mob, there are single individuals who have enough money to move the lines at casinos.

* It's not a matter of playing "nice".. it's a matter of playing fair.

* You are in Washington state.. you know what happened to the Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Poor officiating does not equate to referring to Big Ben as a rapist though pal, he did not officiate the game, Ben and company just were on the possitive side of some poor officiating, let's not forget that the 2 possitive/poor calls that helped Pitt, should not overshadow the 3 that went the way of the Seahawks. Once those "bad" calls are set aside the Seahawks got beat, Plain and simple, which happens endlessly in the NFL...

Hell just thinking back to a few weeks ago when Hines Ward got a personal foul called on him in the Baltimore game when he was on the receiving end of the walloping. :screwy:

I remember a Jets game when Seattle with Dennis Erickson at the helm played a playoff game in NY and Vinnie "super cheat" Testiverte scored a touchdown by being tackled on the 2 tard line... :lame:

Pitt is a damn good football team, which they consistently prove week after week in the regular season and let's not forget the schooling they gave to Arizona in that Superbowl.

I know you being a rabid Ravens and Cardinals fan would have animosity towards Pitt, thats a big rivalvry, but every game has winners and losers and just like in the play offs Baltimore came to Heinz feild and got beat. Just like New Orleans came to Seattle and got schooled and then Seattle went to Chicago and got walloped....

And Jeff, I agree that GB are playing their best football this year, I also think Pitt is as well, which will make for an epic game. I said earlier about Pitt, if they play on cylinders GB will get pummeled, if they play a game like they did against NY then it will be closer.

Well, not sure how one could be confident in GB this week given that they're facing John Elway, Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, Rod Smith and a stoudt Denver defense. My prediction: Broncos beat Packers 31-24....Should be a heckuva game.....this Sat. night in my living room  ...Given the NFL wasteland we've become here in Mile High land, watching parts of that game again will warm my soul...And fire me up for SB Sunday, which has the cast and makings to be legendary. I've really got nothin' else to add to the astute analyses posted above, except to say the only thing that would make Packers v. Steelers better for me would be if Vince Lombardi and Chuck Noll were roaming the sidelines. O/w, can't get anymore old skool then matching up these two franchises.
