Butch Walker Plays the Piano Man on New Song 'Holy Water Hangover' - Rolling Stone

Butch Walker does nothing halfway: On his last album, a concept record about a politically divided America, he sang from the POV of both earnest lefties and far-right loons. For the follow-up, Butch Walker As…Glenn, the guitar shredder, songwriter, and Green Day producer transforms into a Seventies barroom piano player whose name gives the record its title.

Ahead of its Aug. 26 release date, Walker announced the project with “Holy Water Hangover,” a piano ballad about losing sight of one’s identity. “Ain’t it funny when the mirror looks back at you/and it don’t know who you are,” Walker/Glenn sings. “Holy Water Hangover” arrives with a music video filmed at Bob Baker’s Marionette Theater in Los Angeles that’s replete with prisms, a burlesque dancer, and Walker in outrageously rouged cheeks.

"Between reaching for all of my rock n roll piano balladeer muses of my youth while driving or motorcycling, and feeling a common thread of snarky humor with sad reality, I started a journey for this new crop of songs,” Walker wrote of the album on social media. “I said to myself, ‘Okay… you haven’t really written a record that feels like a soundtrack to all the rock balladeer bar singers out there.. and you know you wanna…’”

Along with “Holy Water Hangover,” Glenn includes a sequel of sorts to “Bethamphetamine (Pretty Pretty),” a song off Walker’s 2006 glam album The Rise and Fall of Butch Walker and the Let’s-Go-Out-Tonites, titled “Tell Me I’m Pretty (Bethamphetamine Part 2),” and the collaboration with Elizabeth Cook “Don’t Let It Weigh Heavy on Your Heart.” (Walker produced Cook’s superb 2020 album Aftermath.)

Walker will return to the road in support of Glenn in October with an 11-city tour. Aaron Lee Tasjan, who plays on Glenn, will open and play with Walker’s band.

  • AlphaMale changed the title to Butch Walker as... Glenn (2022)

For a second I thought it was Glen from here and thought it would be Butch singing in an English accent, wrapped in a Soviet flag, choosing songs of dubious quality.

lol. I'm having a hard time trying to guess the political leaning of whoever did the write up, but I'll probably give this a listen, out of curiosity. I love Butch, but I expect this to be dreadful, but I'll check out the lyrical aspect if nothing else.

I love it. Sure he hasn't gone back to the Marvy styling's that we all love, but there is no denying his talent as a musician/chameleon, songwriter, producer. I am all in and find joy in all the music he makes.

Thanks for posting this!

    • Acoustic version of 'You're Not Alone'.
    • New album 'New Life' out October 18th through Escape Music. From Escape Music: Matt Filippini is an Italian guitar player, rock songwriter and producer. After working with some local bands, he started to take it seriously when in 2001 he started to play some gigs in Italy during a masterclass tour of the legendary drummer Ian Paice (Deep Purple founder and current member since 1968 but also with Paul McCartney, Gary Moore and Whitesnake).  One year later, in 2003, after writing a bunch of rocking songs and recording a demo in his home studio, Matt gave a cd with the tracks to listen to Mr. Paice who liked the stuff and agreed to record the drum tracks for the songs. So after Ian Paice recorded three of the tracks, Matt asked Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, …) to record vocals for two of the songs. Those became Rose In Hell and Where Do You Hide The Blues You’ve Got, two of the most appreciated songs from the first Matt’s studio album, MOONSTONE PROJECT Time To Take A stand, released April 2006 on Majestic Rock Records. The album features other rock and roll gods like Carmine Appice, Steve Walsh of Kansas, Eric Bloom of Blue Oyster Cult, Graham Bonnet of Rainbow and many more! The album, produced and written by Filippini himself, has been acclaimed by the music press with some great reviews and adored by thousands of classic rock fans from all over the World. From 2005 to 2008 Filippini played several gigs in Europe with his band and some very special guests like Ian Paice, Glenn Hughes, Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake) and Carmine Appice. In 2009 Matt released the second and final chapter of his Moonstone Project, Rebel on the Run, co-produced by Alessandro Del Vecchio. The album is more ”band sounding” than the 1st one, having the same singer for 9 of the 10 songs, the vocalist James Christian of House of Lords. In June 2009 the album was in the European top 10 rock chart just below Iron Maiden! Other highlights of Matt’s career include a jam session on stage with amazing USA rock giants Blue Oyster Cult, and in 2009 Matt played several gigs in Europe with Ian Paice and Glenn Hughes, as well as a two week tour of Spain with guitarist Bernie Marsden of Whitesnake. In 2010 Matt toured Spain and Italy with Carmine Appice., in September 2010 Matt he played a festival in Sardinia along with Roger Glover (Deep Purple), Bobby Kimball and Steve Lukather of Toto and Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath and Ronnie Dio).In 2011, Through the next few years he played with Deep Purple, Doogie White (Rainbow and Malmsteen) and Neil Murray (Whitesnake and brian May Band), as well as several gigs with Hughes and Paice. He has certainly been active these last few years! Matt is currently writing new songs for an upcoming solo album. The songs are going to be in the classic rock vein Matt loves with just a little touch of blues, funk and some acoustic atmosphere
