Glen
I always like Lukather albums - not always the style I would listen to but really varied and interesting & of course sublime playing.

Leykis101
It's almost like... eek!!! HE CARES!! almost as if he sits down and decides, hey I have a fairly large fan base, and they have continued to stick with me, and the music I have played seems to be why they stay with me, so instead of "exploring himself as an artist" and fucking all his fans off by releasing an album full of experimental hip hop tunes, he says my fan base loves me for this, so I will play this and expand on it, and I cant think of all that many musicians in any genre, who stay planted in their roots, and continually give their fans album after album, exactly what it is they love about that musician, actually, he is really the ONLY one I can think of off the top of my head? The Experimental thing is a valid point, although Lukather' career has been based on playing virtually every style of music as the top session guitarist, so the 'experimentation' thing he continually does all the time for everyone elses albums . For his own stuff, it is varied in style enough to keep most people happy and why he never comes up with the same album over and over and why his albums sound fresh, new and most importantly exciting...just like his new one. Let me tell you bro, when I think someone staying planted in their roots, I dont mean they play the exact same song over and over and over and over and over for 40 years, so yeah you can go ahead and just delete Angus right off that list bro, I realize he gives some people a tremendous woody(G-Off loves the schoolboy uniform) but I am talking about something completely different when I say he remains who he is, that is he keeps the same sound while evolving it, I listen to some Angus from 74 and the only reason I can tell it from 2011-13 is because theres a different singer on the songs, if it weren't for that, I'd be fucked right off and lost, and think it was the same exact song playing since 74! but yeah Dirty Looks, If you stop counting after the One Bad Leg disc, and I'll go with the Pretty Maids, they are a valid and correct example, good job G-OFF PS, I saw the trailer to your new movie, it looks "axion PACKED!!" cant wait to see it. Nightrain
Yesterday I got through the new album and first spin sounds okay, not really great but varied, I agree definitely something that you need to listen probably at least 3 times to grasp, I'll come back to this later
Nightrain
btw probably sounds good if moderator can change the topic to 'Transition' so it's relevant to discuss the whole album instead of just one song
Glen
First listen through and the stand outs were 'Once Again', 'Right The Wrong' and the rather great 'Do I Stand Alone' As usual it's a mixed bag and not every style covered is a fav of mine, but you can't fault the musianship and it certainly is a varied listen

Fair enough. One pat on the head out of three is still nice. The main example I was going to use was Tesla but the wonderful idiots kind of ruined that with that stupid covers album. I know it shouldn't count because it should be designated for originals albums only, but the fact that the rubbish was so far removed from what a fan of Tesla expects is what makes them cross themselves off this list for me. In terms of original music, though, they're the masters of this you speak of. I'll give this Lukather disc a spin too, but like Glen and Nightrain, I 100% expect to like 2-3 songs, like the last album, and pencil the rest up to well played but not my thing at all. Will see, though, it may surprise me.

Leykis101
I think this is absolutely top tier stuff, I can honestly say I wasn't even kind of thinking of hitting the forward button once, as varied as the songs are, they all kind of work into each other, if any of you cant hear what im talking about I'll try and explain, you very rarely hear me state any one song, it's not because I dont have favorite songs, it's more or less that its the exact opposite, there are usually so many horrible songs, and very few good ones, one thing I love about Steve Lukather, happens to be that for whatever reason, 90% of what he does, it just hits me, I dont know what it is, the chord and note progressions he makes, never go off the ones in my head, like when im listening to most people, they usually will be playing a certain pattern of chords or notes, but most the time, on my first listen, the chorus will (musically) stray from what I hear in my mind, Lukather seems to play exactly the next chord or notes or patterns that I hear in my mind, I dont know if that makes sense? but I really cant describe it any differently, that being said, this is no different, every single song here, regardless of tempo, or key, they all fall in line with what I want to hear on a Lukather disc, thats a pretty strong effect and talent, he's remarkable, one of a kind, a genius! Nightrain
Just completed the third spin yesterday and I say I'm pretty satisfied with this album although I can see some room for improvement, but overall a pleasantly good album. Most of the songs are in the slow-paced, more mellow than the prior, and probably a little bit jazzy stuff goin' on. The first track, 'Judgement Day' is justified well with the 7 minutes length, good haunting verse, it has Sting feel to it, and the chorus is also good. I still have mix feeling with 'Creep Motel'. Probably an average bluesy track but the solo is beautiful. 'Once Again' is an amazing piano ballad, 'Right The Wrong' is also a nice track and the bridge part is the most shining part of it. 'Transition' is mostly instrumental, a good 7/10 stuff I guess. I like the last 4 tracks a lot, I thought the greatest part of this album is on the second half. 'Do I Stand Alone' and 'Rest of The World' are the best tracks here IMHO. The last Chaplin cover, 'Smile' is also smooth, and looks like a tribute to his late mom who love this song so much. And the production is also great. 78%
Geoff
I heard this a few days ago and for the most part I thought it was actually pretty nice. A handful of tracks I never need to hear again in my life, but some pretty nice stuff on here. I'll drop some more thoughts on it after a few more spins.
