Seattle Coach Pete Carroll: Seahawks Only Need 3 Losses To Reach Super Bowl

TS-Seattle-Coach-large.jpg

RENTON, WA—Just a day after Seattle became the first team with a losing record to make the playoffs, a jubilant and confident head coach Pete Carroll announced that the Seahawks were only three losses away from reaching the Super Bowl. "Not only am I sure this team can lose the next three, but we're going to go to Arlington, lose to whatever team they put in front of us, and bring home a Super Bowl trophy to Seattle," Carroll told reporters during a press conference Monday. "The question isn't if we are going to lose, but how much we are going to lose by. I'm predicting 40 or 50 points."

"This is our year," he added.

Citing two early-season wins, Carroll, who gave his players the week off to prepare for the Jan. 8 matchup against the New Orleans Saints, admitted to previously having doubts that his team could lose enough games to make a playoff run.

"Sure, we got off to a rocky start there, and yes, I was concerned when we beat a division rival in the 49ers, but we never won more than two games in a row after that. And now here we are, just a handful of games away from playing to lose it all," Carroll said. "The turning point in our season was definitely being blown out by the Giants in week 9. That's when I knew this team was Super Bowl material."

"To be honest, I was worried when we won that last one," said Carroll, adding that he could only watch helplessly from the sidelines when, despite their best efforts, his players defeated St. Louis in the final game of the season. "But when I realized that New York and Tampa Bay had both won too many games to make the wild-card round and that we had slipped by, I went out of my mind. Just three more losses to go, and trust me, this team has what it takes to lose those games."

Carroll maintained that while the Seahawks did not rank dead last in the league in any statistical category, their poor overall team performance had earned them a spot in the league's postseason.

"Marshawn Lynch, our top rusher, only gained 573 yards this year, plus we only had one receiver go over 750 yards," Carroll said. "That was Mike Williams, who had 751. And people said he wouldn't work out for us."

"[Quarterback] Matt [Hasselbeck] did throw for 3,000 yards before becoming injured, it's true, but that's water under the bridge," Carroll said. "I still would have started him against St. Louis if he'd been healthy. Matt and Charlie [Whitehurst] both give you an equally good chance to lose the game."

The habitually upbeat Carroll became agitated, however, when reporters began to question whether he had a complete understanding of how the playoff system worked, and whether, by extension, he misunderstood the entire structure of the NFL.

"Listen, I know what you're trying to say here, and maybe 7-9 isn't the losingest record anyone's ever posted, but face it—we're still playing when other teams aren't," Carroll said. "So we must be doing something right. Remember, no matter what my college coaching record was, I lost plenty of games with the Jets. Plenty. Do I have to remind you that the Seahawks lost three of their last four games?"

Carroll went on to say that he was "beyond confident" his team could lose to the Saints on Sunday, citing the New Orleans' strong 6-2 road record as reason enough not to worry.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we were shut out three games in a row in this year's playoffs," Carroll added. "I know they say it's impossible, but trust me, if any team can do it, the Seahawks can."

Does anyone else just wish Pete Carroll would go away already?

You gotta love when he jumped ship at USC just before everything blew up. I'm not sure how can expect players to look up to him and play their hardest for him. He jokes about losing.. well, next year he will lose more games in the division and finish last behind the Rams, Cardinals, and 49ers. I know this was just his lame attempt at humor but what a ass.

I know he will be gone in another year or two... just wish he'd go away NOW.

It's not "his" lame attempt at humor. This is from The Onion, which is a well known parody/humor publication/website ala "National Lampoon"

That is too funny and yes people Seatown is off the rails with the "big" game tomorrow...

One of these days people will realize that ALL of our pro sports team just plain suck.

Wait, except the WNBA team The Storm, they did win the big trophy last year.

I still don't understand how a huge city like Seattle can't get another NBA team. Or why such a big Northern Pacific city can't get a freakin' NHL team. The NHL, in all its wisdom chose hockey hotbeds like Tampa Bay, Florida(Sunrise just north of Miami), Atlanta, Anaheim, San Jose and of course Phoenix. I guess they were banking on the retired Canadian snowbirds and Disney fans to fill the seats.

A pro hockey team would be awesome and the fascilities are here, we have 4 (?) minor level hockey teams and they are quit entertaining and popular...

I saw on the morning news last week that the NBA is offering up another expansion team this year, but " Seattle's fascilities are not up to the standards of the NBA." So I guess our arena is not cool enough for the NBA, ironically that is why the Sonics left.

What's the line on the Seahawks Saints game tomorrow? Saints by 21? 35???

Actually, they're only favored by 10 or 10.5 depending on where ya look. That trip to the north-west is a great equalizer, and I personally don't expect the Saints to just roll over them. If the Seahawks can keep it close in the first half, I think they can frustrate the Saints and make it quite interesting.

Watch 'em lose 35-0 now that I've said that... :christmas:

That's one thing that has always been with Seattle, the "what team is playing today?' syndrome. NO being a "dome" team might favor the Hawks today, it is a balmy mid 30's with a good chance of rain.

I'm not a fan or hater of either team but that TD run by Lynch was absolutely f*ckin' awesome! To think my Packers could have traded for him. I'm not sure how good he was during the regular season but wow, what a run.

    • Funnily enough, I read that this afternoon when I went to add the album to my collection on the main page. I got the European version which has two bonus tracks ... if you don't have them, you really aint missing anything

    • Created and Posted this video recently in order to promote Ryder SRIII a little more.  I love this song, one of my personal favs from the record.   Be careful viewing at work though (NSFW), just for a couple of images in the video.
    • Named my HH self after the song Auslander on the album Stain. Love that track. Really like the whole album. It's like Living Colour's "Slave to the Grind" or "Dog Eat Dog".

Brothers Johnny and Donnie Van Zant (respectively current lead vocalist of Southern Rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd and founding member of .38 Special) were able to find room in their busy schedules for the first time in 1998, recording their collaboration album “Brother to Brother”: a tribute to their late brother and Lynyrd Skynyrd original singer and founding member Ronnie. Such release was highly acclaimed between the press and fans worldwide and brought the duo to record a follow up album, simply entitled “II” in 2001. Their collaboration during the years did not stop as they tapped their feet in a more Country-oriented style with the release of “Get Right With the Man” (certified Gold in the USA in 2005) and later on with “My Kind of Country” in 2007. Now the brothers once again reinvent themselves, offering a Christian-themed album encompassing their Rock and Blues musical roots (and with a touch of Country for good measure). The result “Always Look Up” is made up of songs that will touch the listener’s heart and soul, with an emotional depth that is truly second to none in today’s musical landscape. Experience the soul touching that only the music from the Van Zant family, can provide. You will see why they are icons of the American South, and musical heroes to millions around the globe!

    • I am an atheist but will quite happily listen to Christian music. Hell I will listen to any music if it is good. I don't worship Satan, but will listen to Satanic music if it is good. I will listen to songs about drugs, despite never doing drugs. To me, with very few exceptions, I don't give a tarts furry cup if the lyrics are something I don't care about, as long as the music is good and the singers can sing (even happy to listen to foreign languages). That said, if lyrics make me cringe because they are godawful, it is tough to listen to a song. Some of this is mega cringe, not because it's Christian but because it's just not that great lyrically. I don't think either of these songs are awful, but they just did not grab me and the lyrics could have been so much better. As much as new Stryper gets on my tits as it all sounds the same, classic Stryper despite the preachy lyrics was always well written, hence why I really loved the band. And Michael Sweets first solo album was fucking amazing. I have Guardian, King James, Liberty & Justice, Bloodgood and a few other Christian bands in my collection, so judging Christian music is certainly not about the message, it's just about whether the music is good or not.
    • My opinion Bite Down Hard is the best of the 2.
    • Better than the debut, I agree. But I still struggle to this day with whether Boys or Bite is the best Britny album, so I can't agree with BES being better than Boys.
