One of the more enjoyable releases so far this year for me. This disc reminds me ALOT of last year's "My Midnight Things" by Lizzy Borden. Think I'm crazy? Give that one a listen, then listen to Owens' phrasing and enunciation on the two tracks above, particularly the chorus on "The Way"; VERY Lizzy-like!

Sweet Oblivion - S/T (New project featuring Geoff Tate)
whiplash1972 replied to whiplash1972's topic in Heavy Metal
It's not great, but I like it better than anything off the most recent Rhyche release (The Verdict), or Tate's last Operation: Mindcrime effort. -
Aldo Nova - I'm A Survivor Video I know it's a lot of work, but since Vimeo won't allow their links to be embedded, you actually have to click the link to see the video. ;-) The song itself is on youtube, but not the actual video... *That is indeed former Stryper member Tim Gaines on bass!

BREAKING NEWS: Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the release of an exciting new project featuring legendary former Queensrÿche and current Operation: Mindcrime singer Geoff Tate (Official) on lead vocals, entitled Sweet Oblivion Band on June 14th. The first single and video from the album, "True Colors" is out today and can be watched HERE: Pre-order the album and stream "True Colors" HERE: http://radi.al/SweetOblivion Sweet Oblivion sees Tate teaming up with a stellar cast of Italian musicians led by Simone Mularoni, the mastermind of prog metal masters DGM. Musically, this album marks a return to the more melodic metal style for Tate and showcases a fine collection of songs highlighting the great talents of Mularoni and his cast of musicians. Geoff Tate says, "I was approached by Frontiers to do this record and am pleased I took this chance. It’s an album filled with fun and I believe a lot of the fans who dig the old Queensryche sound will enjoy this one!” Simone Mularoni adds, "I grew up listening to the '70s and '80s rock and metal bands and, of course, Queensryche's classic albums are among my favorites ever. Having the opportunity and luck of working together with a musical giant like Geoff Tate has been a real blessing on both the human and the artistic side. I asked a few amazing musicians and friends to help me out and together we delivered a bunch of classic heavy rock songs in which I tried to fuse a more contemporary approach with a classic Queensryche vibe… the performances are amazing!” The opening track and first video “True Colors” sets the pace for the entire release and shows what the listeners can expect from this record. Excellent musicianship and a sound that harkens back to the massive melodies and hooks of classic albums like “Empire,” “Rage For Order”, and “Operation:Mindcrime”. Enjoy! Geoff Tate vs Queensryche
whiplash1972 replied to whiplash1972's topic in Music Polls and "Best of" Lists
Seems to mainly stem from finanacial issues and from what can be read into it, the other members probably felt like Tate had TOO MUCH control over what the band was doing both musically and financially (especially with several of his family members involved with band operations); everything just finally boiled over. Here's an interview with Geoff Tate from June 2012 giving his side of things: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/qa-geoff-tate-on-queensryches-ugly-split-backstage-brawl-in-brazil-102316/ And then here's the other side from the other members: https://ultimateclassicrock.com/remaining-queensryche-members-accuse-geoff-tate-of-financial-wrongdoing-violence/ DeGarmo leaving in 1998 was the beginning of the end musically (IMO anyway) as the releases after that became darker and way less melodic, with only the occasional exception (song wise). I know alot of people really like the band now, with LaTorre on vocals, and the recent releases, but it's all I can do to get through them. The muscianship is top notch, the vocals are great, but there's just something missing... the songs just aren't memorable to me. I've listened to The Verdict on and off for the last week, and can't remember a single chorus. The only reason I picked The Verdict in this poll is because The New Reality by Tate's Operation: Mindcrime is DREADFUL. At least on the releases prior to that one, you could count on 2-3 decent songs on a Tate release, and his stuff is definitely more melodic than what Ryche has been doing... to my ears at least. -

First up, getting ready for their new release which should arrive tomorrow... Bloodbound - War of Dragons Followed by... Savatage - Sirens / The Dungeons Are Calling -
I figure I know how this one is going to go, but I'm doing it anyway for shiggles... Starting with Tate's first solo effort in 2002 through the recent Operation: Mindcrime and Queensryche discs; which do you prefer?

What he said! But seriously, Outlaw Son was the biggest surprise of 2018 for me; I was simply blown away by how good it is, and as Geoff said, it is consistent from start to finish. One of the best songs from 2018:

It's been 30 years since their debut "Surprise Attack" and 27 since the follow-up "Wild America" (my fave of the two)... I don't know about you all, but I don't have the same energy I had 30 years ago either. I think it's merely a case of the guys being a little more mellow and less "hungry" 30 years on if you will. Still, I enjoy a handful of the songs on the disc, with Sons of Zebedee, Silence the Sirens, Lights Up the River , and Rose of Jericho being my faves.

I enjoyed their 2016 debut "Heavy Crown", but wasn't blown away by it by any means. I've listened to "II" quite a bit since receiving it Friday, and find myself enjoying it more with each listen... a "grower" if you will.
