Santa Cruz - s/t

Stefan

Recommended Posts

Santa Cruz just announced a show in Baltimore in May. Keep an eye out for them in your town. Looks like I don't have to drive to New York City to see them this time around.

Make sure you go if they come to a city near you.

Amaranthe

Rams Head Live Baltimore, MD, US (map)

Lucky for me this falls in between The Monsters Of Rock Cruise, M3, and Rocklahoma... Just glad it doesn't conflict with any of those.. So I'll be going.

Who is Amaranthe? Modern rock? Never heard their music before. Interested in seeing Santa Cruz though.

Amaranthe is a modern, Rammstein-ish metal with female vocals if I remember well. I'm thinking of seeing them cause this tour will visit Hungary too, but I'm not sure though. The two main bands (the other one is a melodic death metal band, I don't remember the name) suck for me, and I don't wanna pay for just a half an hour show from the Santa Cruz...

After seeing Santa Cruz in New York in December.. No doubt I'll be paying to see them in Baltimore... even if they only play for 30 mins.

  • 3 weeks later...

I heard another song on the cloud - 66(6) feet underground - or something like that..........

Anyway, it was pretty good, but a way off the quality of the other 3 tracks.

Not as bad as I had expected. First track is WEAK and the ones after that were good so I was hoping for 9 good tracks but gets a bit worse in quality towards the end. Right now this is where I'm at: songs 2 - 7 ok, 1 and 8-10 not so good... solos are all good basically and better compared to the debut overall because more innovative and interesting. Solos on the debut weren't really distinguishable from each other

I actually really like the solos on the debut and it was one of the few modern albums where I actually bothered to notice the solos. ;)

I wouldn't agree that the first song is weak, but I definitely see it needing more spins to really sink in. It's not instant, but it seems pretty good to me. As for the last 3, I thought they were well settled into their groove by then, and the ballad - 'Can you feel the rain' - was one of my favourites on the album.

I really like the album to be honest. The biggest compliment I can pay these guys is that if I were a musician in a band at the moment, these guys are closest to the style I'd want to be playing. I love the heavy and very modern sound, completely dressed in the 80's anthemic hard rock style.

Yes, there's probably more swearing than necessary and a lot of 'Whoah's too (in fact, I think they sampled the same "whoah" from 'Wasted and wounded' as they used on 'Can you feel the rain,' lol.)

But all minor details aside, I think this is a really excellent album and it will rate very well this year. It's heavy, aggressive, modern, well produced, anthemic, well written and played, and basically, kicks my ass in a way few current bands do.

Yeah Geoff, I have to agree. This is a very good disc. In constant rotation. A little too many F's and MF's but that's about it's only downfall. Very solid disc. Love that ballsy sound that have.

How do you guys compare this to the first? Was about to order it without listening to samples and put on the previous cd instead. I see now why I don't put it on at all these days, it's pretty shit. Not sure what's amiss, dig the vibe, everything is sort of there but the songs are pretty weak.

Does the new one blow the last away or is it more of the same?

Dude I was just thinking about what to write and how to write it to give you a good idea of this album. But the best way really (as stupid as that might sound) is to listen to the record and see for yourself, all the songs are up on youtube I suggest you try it. I've been giving it a few spins a day since I got it (basically cause it's such an easy listen at 40 mins and 10 songs) don't know if I'll still like it in a couple of months or a year but I enjoy it for now. Of course I did listen to the first album regularly after it came out but haven't put on a single song in over a year now I think......... so yeah, check it out on youtube tell us what you think :)

I actually totally know what you mean about the debut, and said it often at the time. I really like the disc, but there was just that something missing. I definitely wouldn't go as far as to call it "pretty shit," lol, but I get your point.

I'm really loving the new disc. There are a few tracks that miss the mark, but even they have some parts in it that are still pretty awesome. And the best songs are really excellent. I personally think it's a pretty big step up from the debut. It's definitely heavier, and I also find it a little more "anthemic," for lack of a better term. They're certainly trying to be the best band in the genre, and maybe they're not too far off. There is still tweaking to be done and room for improvement, but I hope they keep going on the right track. I do definitely prefer this new album to their debut.

    • I was a pretty big fan. Nature Of The Beast is a killer song. Saw them with Dave Gleeson from the Screaming Jets singing and he did an amazing job, but pretty sure they have a new singer now  I recently went through the two most recent albums before this one and there were a couple of ok tracks, but mostly mid. Fun fact: I saw the Angels a couple of years before Doc died at the Middle hotel in Ferntree Gully and they seemed to hate each other. Pretty sure Doc said nothing to the crowd all night. Fun fact 2: when they were building the transit bar in Melbourne, a mate and I found a service elevator that went to the roof, which was under construction. After peeing off the roof, which is always fun, we realised that we could clearly hear the music 5 or 6 floors below from a DJ I think. He was playing Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again. We started yelling down the No Way Get Fucked, Fuck Off bit thinking we were hilarious. Then soon we noticed people looking up, and for some reason they seemed to be clearly hearing us. Another mate then called us to tell us security were on the way up the stairs so we took the service elevator down and managed to laugh it off. Stoopid drunk story I guess, but fun days.
    • Cheeky, getting your artwork in there. I wonder how you did that.  I like the vocal track on #1 and that'd be my pick. I personally don't dig the female versions of songs, because I'm not a female (yet?) and as these are songs written by ourselves I personally feel the best interpretation is an AI dude voice taking the place of your dude voice.
    • Yeah, that's great but this is obviously an accomplished musician probably completely in control of this output... not done with Suno, I'd bet. There's definitely dudes out there who are perfectly capable of doing their own music, like this dude, but for whatever reason might not be able to put a project together, again, for whatever reason... but this definitely feels a lot more like AI feeling in the missing gaps for someone otherwise in complete control of what he wants.  Either way, it is very cool indeed.  As Darkstone says, I'm not sure paying is the way to get the best results. I'm also not saying it isn't, especially with other platforms that are not Suno. I think already knowing what you're doing, musically, is the best way to get best results, personally. Suno, for example, is just perfect for someone who might enjoy writing lyrics but is not in any way shape or form an accomplished (or even adequate, lol) musician.  But yeah, it's pretty cool for some fun. I'm not sure if you checked out my links above. Keeping them pretty quiet due to lyrical content, lol, but you might dig some of the stuff in my links. 'As the moment passes by' and 'I'll wait for you' are two of my personal faves. Along with 'Faith to fall.'
    • Yeah, musically it's what you want, but vocally... Maybe Alex should take some vocal lessons from Ken Tamplin. ;}

    • Yep, although I was never a massive fan.
    • Yes, celebrating their fifty years. There only two original members left in the band. Dusty might agree with me the Angels died when the original singer passed away.
    • It's just not the same without the Doc though...
