Strange day at the beach

After weaving through the hoardes of traffic yesterday (seriously, explain this to me. How come every single person who never goes to the beach suddenly thinks they have to go to the beach on Australia Day?!) I made my way down to one of Sydney's northern beaches yesterday. It's a bit of a steep hike down there, but it's worth it to me because it turns away a lot of people. So as far as crowds go, it's one of the less crowded northern beaches.

Anyway, so I'm out there in the ocean scrapping around in what was pretty awful surf, and I gradually witness the creepiest mist descend in over the coast. Keep in mind this is a 39'C day out, and it's close to midday. Anyway, it's probably boring to all, but I'd just never seen anything like it. It got to the point where this mist was so thick I couldn't even see 50 metres around. The beach is tiny, closed in my 2 headlands, and I could not even see either headland through the mist. I caught a wave in and took a few photos on my wife's phone as it was the only camera we had down here.

Here's the snap. It might not mean anything to anyone, but this is just sitting on the beach looking directly at a huge rocky/grassy headland which is probably about 100-150m down the beach. In this photo it is totally hidden by the mist. Craziness:

What do people smoke on Australia Day? Could 'smoking' be the cause of this so called 'mist'......A few minutes after snapping the infamous 'mist' pictures did you get the munchies and dive head first into a box of Tim Tam cookies?

One of the guys here this morning was telling me how he'd spent $250 on pot and beer yesterday. Maybe he was in a boat at sea?

The explanation I heard was something to do with hot air temperatures mixing with cool sea temperatures. It must have come from pretty far out because the water at the actual beachfront is 22'C at the moment, which is almost toasty. It's been as low as 17'C this year, with still hot outside temps, and I've never seen anything like it. Craziness.

Stop complaining, Geoff ! It is 0'C over here in Germany with snow everywhere. I'd love to have some mist at 39'C ! ;)

That's right Geoff, stop whining! We had -20'C this morning, I'd trade places with you in a blink of an eye...but you would probably freeze your ass off here, my little wombat. ;)

No complaints (except for how many people exist), just awe at the strange misty presence.

I wish I had seen Nick manning a piece of wooden oceancraft emerge from the murky depths.

We've had a run of really hot days here, peaking at that 39'C day. Never a peep out of me - I love it. I'm dreading winter like an anal fisting.

So those rumours aren't true?
