well, i guess for the price, not a lot could be expected in terms of packaging.

what was it... $50 for 15 cds or something..... let's be real for a second here.

got pix to follow?

I am being real. At 1,000 units, replicated silver CDs with color on-disk silk screening, in full-color LP-style jackets are under $1.00 each. At 5,000 units they're like 60 cents each. I have no idea what the production run is, but I'm assuming at least 1,000 units.

They're also charging $10 for shipping when Priority Mail is half that.

I realize that manufacturing costs are only part of the equation, but for $60 I was expecting more.

Pics below. Back of the box is the same as the front. No information at all on the box. Very flimsy cardboard; won't hold up. Same with the "booklet"; very thin paper.

Agreed it's not the best packaging.

But the costs you have listed are just the 'raw' costs. No account for their time, and costs involved in actually recording/mixing/mastering any of the music included. Did i read there was 700 tracks, or somewhere in that realm... 7c per song. (You couldn't even download for that price!) Say they sell 1000 of these... they get $70 per song, and that's beofre any expenses are taken into account.

Compare this to other 'box sets' doing the round and i really think you get what you pay for.

I don't know the band at all, and never actually heard their music, but if any band i really liked released a box set of 15 cds for $50 i'd be stoked. Sure, big grande box, with 50pg booklet and individual sleeves with liner notes would be nice, but pricey at the same time. Guess it depends whether you're after a collecotrs piece or the actual music contained on the discs...

Which is why, if you read my initial post, I recommended waiting to see what the download/data versions will cost. If those are cheaper, I would recommend those alternatives.

Added the boxed set to the HH database (boy did THAT take forever to type in).

One more example of how this was really thrown together without any thought:

The DVD contains 2GB of mp3s, containing demos, live stuff, all of their previous CDs, and all their albums that were never released on CD.... but no artwork, liner notes, or lineups for any of those albums, so there's no way to put any context to those albums we've never heard.

How tough would it have been to throw a folder with PDFs of artwork scans or Word files with track listings/lineups, SOMETHING.

There's 2.3GB of unused space on the DVD, and it would have cost nothing extra just to add that material. Seriously, anything would have been better than nothing, and don't tell me it would have been too expensive, as that would have cost NOTHING to add to the DVD.

With just a little bit of thought and effort, this release could have been huge, but right now what's missing is pissing me off.

P.S. There are repeats of songs throughout the CDs. I assume they are alternate or live versions, but haven't had time to listen, and there's nothing that tells you what's what.

I haven't received mine yet. But from what you have said Dan I am a little disappointed with the cheap packaging and lack of a proper booklet with details about the content of the CD's and some photos etc. would have been nice. However, I still feel that for the amount of songs on here this boxed set is still worthwhile adding to the collection.

  • 3 weeks later...

Got my box set this week. It's gonna take some time to get through playing all the discs. So far I've found a few goodies. As Dan says there's a lot of music styles on offer here. Packaging is very average.

    • Maybe it's because I've heard GnR a couple thousand times by now, but I much prefer "Fall to Pieces" by Velvet Revolver over "Sweet Child o Mine" at this point in my life.
    • I'll have to investigate that Durbin. I'd count Striker and Mick Mars among the best metal releases as well now that I think about it.
    • Haven't picked up Saxon yet, but as far as metal goes, I love the new Durbin album as well.
    • I wasn’t thrilled with the singles as they came out, other than “The Serpent and the King”, but I’ll be damned if they haven’t grown on me while listening to them as part of the cohesive package that is “Invincible Shield”. I broke down and picked up the Target exclusive to get the three bonus tracks, and I enjoy them too. Overall, a damn fine addition to the JP discography. Is it better than “Firepower“? I’m not there yet, but time will tell. 🤔 This one and Saxon have set the bar pretty high for metal this year. 👍
    • Agree with this. Though I think you should check out Firepower. You can get it real cheap new everywhere. It is molten. I'm also enjoying Invincible very much and 2024 new music as a whole.
    • I remember my early days on the internet joining a group on Yahoo (yeah thats how long ago it was) and the woman who created the group was trying to persaude me how great Creed was, so much so that she sent me the first two albums on CD. I had no idea what they sounded like. When I played them all I could think is that they sounded like Pearl Jam, and I fucking hate Pearl Jam. I ended up trading them for something better. I can't remember the ins and outs of it, but I somehow shared my CD collection online and she noticed straight away that the Creed CDs were not listed. She asked me why and I said I sold them as really did not like them, and got something I did like. She never spoke to me again after that

    • I have always been an on/off fan of Priest. Loved Ram it down and Painkiller, then kinda lost interest when Rob left. Only newer albums I ever got around to picking up were Angel of retribution because I saw it real cheap and Nostrodamus as I found the deluxe edition cheap as well. With this one though I was interested in what I heard and saw the deluxe edition looked cool. I then saw they were selling copies on the JP website with a signed art card in both standard and deluxe format, but baulked at the price of the deluxe as they were charging an extra £10 over the unsigned version, and postage was lumpy ... plus I was a few days from getting paid. By the time I went back on there the signed deluxe was gone but they had the standard version with the signed card and it was the same price as the unsigned version (guess nobody was buying it) so decided to buy that and order the deluxe from Amazon, keep the artcard and sell the standard CD on eBay as it is still sealed. So yeah, been playing the album today and on my third (or is it fourth) playthrough, and absolutely loving it. When bands like Bon Jovi are  getting soft as shit with age, Rob and the guys are still full on metal gods. At 72, Rob should not be able to still perform like this, but he fucking well is, so more power to him. Really good start to the year so far with the 2024 albums I have picked up.
    • Evidently, Tichy has joined up with Gene Simmons' solo band, and the Daisies replaced him with Tommy Clufetos who'd helped them out before. Be interesting to see how much more there is to the story....
    • Been listening to this one on and off since Friday, and must say I'm VERY impressed. This is easily his best solo release in my opinion, and is much more melodic than his work with Creed. This one might just be this years equivalent to Godsmack for me personally i.e. late 90s musicians going in a more melodic direction and it working quite well!
