Journey - Evolution (1979)

April 1979, Journey released IMO their greatest ever album.

I absolutely love this album, playing it now, it sounds as good as ever.

Steve Perry came forth on their classic 4th album - Infinity, this for me surpasses that great album.

Escape gets all the plaudits, a fantastic album, certainly more appealing to the masses but not necessarily better!

When I was at High School, the music class room had all the Journey album covers on the wall, from Infinity to Escape, that always sticks in my mind.

This album takes me back to a nice time in my life, the late 70`s, some of my favourite ever memories.

Great vocals, superb guitar from Schon as always, especially on Lovin` You Is Easy!

Sweet And Simple is one of the best and most underrated Journey songs ever IMO

It's definetely my favorite Journey album. I think I've listened to Evolution more than any other album. I've listened to it so many times that even after not listening to it for several years I still felt burned out when I listened to it again. Even with that being the case I still felt the need to listen to it over and over again. Something strangely perfect about the album.

Definitely my favourtite Journey album (although only by a smidgeon over Escape and Infinity).....on this though there is no filler......and from tracks 5 through 9 is about as perfect as rock music gets. Five killer tracks in a row.

'Evolution' comes in at about 4-5 on my Journey list after Escape, Frontiers, Departure and maybe Infinity aswell. Great songs for sure, but I think there are better songs on other albums.

There are better songs on other albums........but this is their most consistent release.

Arguably Schons best playing as well.

......its miles ahead of Departure mate

Not for me. 'Line Of Fire' & 'Anyway You Want it' are 2 reasons to start with.

Granted there are at least 5 classic tracks on Departure, but there are more on Evolution.

Any Way You Want It, Where Were You, Line Of Fire, Walks Like A Lady and Stay Awhile are the classics.

Also includes two of Perry's finest moments - Good Morning Girl and Im Cryin.

The rest are good, but not classic IMO.

Evolution though - the only song even remotely close to filler is 'Daydream' (even that is excellent) the rest are all awesome. With a capital A.

In fact Im going to listen to it on the way home tonight in celebration

I like this one but I'd probably rank this 3rd or 4th. That said, I do think that which Journey/Survivor album you prefer is much more a matter of which one you heard first & which has the most sentimental value to you, rather than the one that's technically the best. I.e, "Vital Signs" is no doubt technically the best Survivor album (i.e, the fewest filler tunes) but I heard "When Seconds Count" first and love that one more. Same with this album, I do like it but it has no sentimental value for me at all and I'd definitely put "Escape", "Frontiers" and probably even "Raised on Radio" ahead of this.

Great album, flows seamlessly with classic songs. I definitely appreciate it more now than when I first got it on vinyl when I was a kid. I'd put it at #2 just behind Escape for me.

Well said Richie, absolute quality

I'm glad someone made this post. I had planned to make a topic about how great this album is, but for one reason or another it never happened.

Someone had to do it sooner or later

Nice to see a few admirers within this forum
