  1. You really got me thinking about this one! For me, pretentious is when you make someone else feel small for not sharing your interest or knowledge eg rolling of the eyes/thinking ‘Oh you idiot’ if someone says Music school instead of Conservatoire, or Grunge instead of Djent. The times things like that need to be accurate are rare. There’s nothing wrong with using the proper terms, it’s how/when you use them I reckon. I heard a story in the workplace and staff were allowed to play their music one week. One person hated pop/rock etc as he thinks it has no merit to it. When it came to his turn he deliberately played the most obscure inaccessible piece of contemporary classical he could think of. To me, that was sooooooooo pretentious (though I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to hear the comments that would have been going round). It actually does a disservice to the music he loved too as it potentially risked confirming people's opinion of that style as unlistenable and turning them off from it even further
  2. Ah but surely there are PhDs and Physicists who love music too and it would be unfair not to create something for them. I think of pretentious as being linked to 'pretence' - so for me, one form of it would be bands who created something 'out there' just for the sake of causing controversy or to create a talking point without really believing in what they were doing. When it comes to listeners,it'd be those who claimed to love and 'understand' a piece just to appear educated or enlightened when in reality they can surely see it has no substance. I'm thinking some of the manufactured pop bands are likely to fall into the pretentious category too but it's weird, I'm struggling to name any off the top of my head. Dream Theater? Hymn of a 1000 voices felt pretentious to moi
  3. Also "Hike It Up."The 2 dont compare imo. All this thread proves is that one persons 10 is anothers 8 (or worse) and vice versa. Truu. But it would be cool for each of us to compile our personal lists, and then we could compile all the crossovers into one master list. Wooow like the ultimate of ultimate's playlist?
  4. Yaaay, I'm not such a novice as I thought. have heard (and love) quite a few of them. Remember singing 'Livin on a Prayer' as Karaoke with some friends at a wedding. Horrendous!!! We killed it dead.
  5. Thanks, checking samples... Cheers mrbandwidth. You will let me know your opinion (good or bad) won't you? Sure, but first they have a new video: And about my opinion, here it is: well it's difficult to judge only by samples (except the 2 full tracks) but I notice a quite different style from their previous album Silk Under The Skin (1990), which was basically the typical Melodic Hard Rock style of 80's era; this one is heavier in instruments and slower in tempo, certainly I checked the real duration of the tracks by searching in google and are beyond 5 minutes in nearly all of them (and one of 12 mins). The good points are that is different to most albums of modern MHR out there, the vocal choruses, and songwriting is more mature than their previous; the bad that most of the songs don't seem very catchy. The tracks/samples that I liked most are One Lifetime, Nobody Fills The Loneliness, Chimera, and The Borders Of Light (though this one being 12 minutes, I don't know how it would be complete). Thanks for the feedback mrbandwidth, really appreciate you taking the time! I noticed the other day that it's available on Spotify now if you did fancy hearing the whole thing (but no pressure if you weren't tempted to hear more after the samples + if it's not your 'thing'). I think Kostas will be pleased to hear it has a more mature sound as he was only 20 I think when he wrote Silk Under the Skin and did a music degree since then. Chimera and the Borders of Light are my favourites! (+ I do the female vocals on Chimera )
  6. It's awful how homelessness is becoming such a big issue. It seems every doorway I walk past in the mornings is a 'home' to someone and just outside my workplace is a candlelit memorial set up for one who died the other night
  7. Click click boom boom definitely didn't work for me. Listened to quite a few others but only Hand in Hand stuck in my head from 1st listening. Will give the ones you've listed a try. Looks like I may be leaning towards being a rock ballads kind of girl
  8. Done Let's find out what your 10 out of 10 would be (and why)
  9. Whoops, missed that post. Shall have a listen now as haven't got into much of Black Sabbath :-) Guess I should have it on high volume?..... ....they're not as 'heavy' or screechy as I'd always been led to believe. Liked that track, brilliant drum lines on it! Was checking out Crown of Thorns stuff last night
  10. Also "Hike It Up." The 2 dont compare imo. All this thread proves is that one persons 10 is anothers 8 (or worse) and vice versa. True, but i find it interesting to see what others idea of a 10 is.I for one am fully aware that my idea of a 10 might not be someone else's. ... that's what I fancied finding out too. My criteria for what makes a song perfect for me is likely to be completely different to what makes another's perfect song perfect for them. One factor that can influence a choice is down to personal memories associated with a particular song so maybe the song itself isn't stylistically brilliant but it's still perfect for them. Then again, maybe I'll just end up going round in circles searching for that elusive perfect circle. I think I've decided for me I have different perfect songs depending on mood or situation eg Chris Rea's Road to Hell (complete with the introductory part 'Stood still on a highway, I saw a woman by the side of the roaa.oaad.....') or Garth Brooks' Callin' Baton Rouge for when I'm driving Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Talis when I've got headphones in and want to drift and get lost in beautiful English harmonies Waterboys Be My Enemy? when I want to get some anger out. Plus I love to listen to others' recommendations for the stand out pieces of each genre.
  11. I must be just too fussy, or using the wrong criteria to judge cos I'm not managing to think of m(any) 10s...and nobody better say 'Typical woman' I'm just thinking of songs that i love and can't fault. I guess that makes them 10s for me. Been listening to all the songs mentioned by everyone. haven't found any I don't like yet. From yours, we listened to Ten's song twice - it's awesome

  13. I'll check them all out. Can you say what makes them perfect for you? That's the bit I'm struggling on. The only one I can think of at the moment for me is The Stolen Child by The Waterboys. (Warning it's a folk song rather than rock so don't look it up if folk's not your thing.) My mood doesn't affect whether I want to listen to it or not, I notice something new about it each time I hear it, the lyrics, vocals, length of piece are just right....aarrrgghhhh just thought of something that knocks a point off it - was gonna say it's one that I can either listen closely to or have playing in the background but actually it doesn't work as background music as the talking bits are intrusive if you're trying to chat with someone. PANTS!!!....and back to the thinking board There must be a rock song that hits all the right buttons for me in addition to Brothers in Arms
  14. ...Or is it like hunting for a perfect circle? Maybe I'm too fussy but every time I think I can name one I'll think of something about it that lets it down (even if it's something as silly as the variations in volume during the piece. Admittedly I'm thinking of classical music with that particular gripe)
  15. Hmmmmm, trouble is I'm a lazy sod too. Maybe I'll start a new thread if I can't find one to comment on on this site. But maybe i'm too lazy to do that as well
  16. Love the bass lines. Is there a 10 out of 10 thread on the go anywhere? Real 10 out of 10s, the perfect song that nothing, and I mean nothing lets it down for you? There is a thread like that somewhere. Awww you ain't gonna make me do the effort to hunt it down are you?

  18. Ah cheers Cure, I'll work my way through them and then choose an album of theirs to buy I'm loving all this new music I'm getting exposed to! Had kind of got stuck into a rut with my listening habits until recently. Friend at work has leant me a reggae CD which I would have said is not really my thing but I gave it a go today. It started off with a fun cover of Alphaville's Forever Young (by Patrick P). I'm actually loving the poetry of all the lyrics which reminds me to maybe start a thread to see whether people think a great song can be ruined by naff lyrics or whether the music would always be strong enough to override that.
  19. Was listening to 'Hand in Hand' by them today after checking out the recommendation from Geoff above. Really love that one. For some reason it reminds me of 'I've seen that movie too' by E.John
