  1. Wikipedia says they are,if you trust them. I've never really got what makes a piece 'progressive' (although from various comments I gather they tend to be long?) Length can be an element. Changing time signatures, recurring themes, often a more Classical approach to song composition, the use of uncommon instruments, these are all elements of Progressive Rock and Metal. Ah, sounds like I should love it then! Is Frank Zappa prog? The only album I know for sure that's considered prog rock is Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and I've not been able to sit through that one, which is a shame as I know it's considered one of the 'must have' albums by a lot of people. There must be some that I would enjoy though surely!
  2. Ahh so it is good more for browsability reasons to some extent? So ideally,in a record store it would be better for artists if they were shelved in multiple genres where possible? (Like the Hoobastank album I was looking for could have gone in Metal,Rock+mainstream sections)

  4. Power metal is horrible. And so is prog stuff. ...Except the good prog stuff?
  5. I like CuretheSane's approach. I try to appreciate good quality music whatever the 'genre' it's been assigned. And of course, within any genre there will be good&bad quality stuff,or stuff you just can't 'get' (Experimental contemporary classical music for example- though there have been occasional pieces among that which I've quite liked)
  6. And i guess categorizing can be super helpful for, say, the 'If you liked this album then you may also like this...' arena
  7. Dancing with the wrong girl seems to have a strong country music vibe going on. Kind of like it
  8. What type of music does your husband do, out of curiosity? Stuff we'd find on these pages? Absolutely I'll check with him if he'd be happy for me to 'fess up He's the drummer with Raw Silk and wrote all the tracks on the 1st album Silk Under the Skin which = 80s AOR style. The 2nd album The Borders of Light with new lineup is due out later this month (Nobody Fills the Loneliness is the 1st single from it and there's a lyric video on youtube for it or free download via the Raw Silk Official website). I'm useless at classifying styles but would probably describe it as Melodic RockWow! That's great.Their debut is a killer and certainly a classic of the genre. Very much looking forward to the new one. Oh wow, thanks Darkstone. I certainly love the new album, (but I accept I may be just a weeny bit biased) There's a couple of European radio stations planning to play multiple tracks from the album later this month. I can check which shows and post details on here (or message you) if you're interested? That would be great, thanks. I'm not very tech savvy though, so i'm not sure how i'd be able to tune in to European radio. I'll work it out. The one I know of straight off is on 24th April DJ Sonny Eazy Monday Show (http://rockchicks-radio.de ) His show starts 8pm German time so - depending where you are - that might actually be the middle of the night for you come to think of it.
  9. Was listening to compilation album+was shocked when 2 of the tracks i loved turned out to be by Kylie Minogue (A problem should be shared) + Britney Spears (Everytime) :-) I'm with Gotthardline in that songs with sewage vocals were always a no no for me in the past but they've really grown on me. I still can't sit through a whole album of them (Deftones for example I love when I first start the album but after a couple of songs I have to switch to something else. I did really enjoy seeing them live though). Pink Floyd i thought i'd never listen to and i still haven't managed to sit through the whole of 'Dark side...' so have stayed consistent with that to date
  10. Certainly preferred Bryan Ferry's vocals on 'Hard Rain' to Dylan's. I always get the feeling Adele tries too hard with her vocals too which really puts me off listening to anything by her
  11. Thanks Simo, that was a good thread! Guess it comes down to personal taste on whether peeps think it's a good or bad thing categorizing judging from the comments there. Do you reckon it does artists a disservice when music gets too narrowly categorised or does it help in some way by creating niche markets and loyal followings?
  12. Just wondered if anyone had thoughts on this? (or if you could point me in direction to a thread where it's already been discussed). Even though I work in a library environment so should absolutely LOVE classifying and categorising stuff I wondered if it had gone too far with music now we have all these genres and sub genres. Can't decide if it helps or hinders artists. Is it more of benefit to listeners so that they identify with a certain community but could 'harm' artists in that it could pitch fans loyal to one genre against another - a bit like the big mainstream artists who give their fans 'names' like Little monsters, Beliebers etc and the Little Monsters would never listen to - or admit to listening to - anything written by Bieber regardless of whether the music was good or not. (Just for the record I'm not a Little Monster or a Belieber myself ) What got me thinking about it was the reaction I got from a fan of one band when I suggested they might like another band 'as it's similar grunge music'. He was mightily put out and said the band he was listening to was some other sub genre of metal that I'd never even heard of and the band I'd described as 'grunge' were actually another sub genre that was new to me too and he wouldn't listen to that. Also I went to buy what I considered a mainstream album (by Hoobastank) and nearly left without it as I couldn't find it in the A-Z section of a store but was then told it's classified as Heavy Metal. Who decides to classify it as that? The band or their publicity team?

Very cool. Hope this new album does well for him and the band. Yaaay! Thanks Geoff

  15. Are sales of music downloads on the increase do you know? Or is the trend still towards people wanting music for free? Must admit, I went through a phase of just listening to tracks on Spotify as it was rare I'd find a whole album I enjoyed (plus was running out of space to store them) but I always felt a bit guilty so have started buying single tracks as downloads instead Most peoples gripe with streaming is the artist not receiving enough so i guess any increase is a step in the right direction. Yep definitely agree re any increase certainly means things are heading the right way
  16. Thinking about my own listening habits & how they've altered, I can listen to music all day long but unless tracks on an album are pretty varied I find it hard to listen to one straight through-will put multiple cds in player &hit 'random' or use ipod with my compilations so the albums are broken up. I wonder whether artists should do more collaborations on playlists or compilatiin albums? Or diversify more with the tracks on their own albums?

  19. Haha, nothing too exciting. Just think it's better to double check. I guess it goes without saying that any views I express on here do not necessarily coincide with his?

  21. I reckon the more bands/artists you can have whose main motivation is creating great music and getting it heard (as opposed to trying to get famous or rich) the better. Was watching an old interview with Bette Davis yesterday and she was saying how she would turn down shitty scripts even though it got her into trouble with the studios because she recognised that if she stuck to producing good quality movies then people would WANT to pay to go see them which would make her box office gold over time which increased her power with the studios when negotiating her fee, so in the long term the financial rewards followed naturally. I really wish we could see some more record labels who would offer a decent cut to the artists and show more belief in those they represent. My husband got a couple of label offers but when you looked closely at what they were offering it was ridiculous. He'd paid for and produced the product (ie the album) and it was almost like they were asking him to pay them to sell it too rather than the other way round. He set up his own label in the end and though it's a helluva lot of work at least we have the satisfaction of knowing that any returns we see will go to the artists and we have control over what happens with it to some extent.
  22. Karpetface, you put me to shame! I shall be more proactive in paying to go watch live gigs of good bands+buying their merchandise in future B-)
