  1. Maybe I'm being super thick here so then this will be an incredibly short thread which can be shot down with one answer, but what on earth makes a piece 'Adult oriented' rock as opposed to just 'rock'? Is it the themes to the lyrics? The images associated with the bands? or something more than that?
  2. Yeah, I think ideally (in stores at least) a lot of bands could benefit from being marketed and shelved in multiple sections especially if there is crossover sounds with the tracks on the album. Okay, if you have an album and every track is totally similar e.g. with screaming vocals/manic drumming or whatever then it makes sense to put it in the thrash metal section - apologies maybe 'thrash' metal would be the wrong section for that style but I'm not too hot on recognising my genres! I'll have a listen to your band and see if I'd have thought to look in the hard rock section if I was trying to buy it.
  3. Yeah, I thought i'd seen a post from you on here too. I get the feeling you like winding Karpetface up
  4. Watched Contraband with Mark Wahlberg last night. Wound my partner up by moaning about the lack of 'moral' ending to the thing. Hahaha. It was a very stupid movie!
  5. Wow, I didn't know that Soft Cell hadn't written 'Tainted Love' either. The original by Gloria Jones is equally as good Plus that Cyndi Lauper track! I wonder if the original artists like it or hate it when songs they've written get 'taken over' by other bands? I suppose that'd be another one that if you asked 100 artists who it had happened to would return you 100 different answers On the one hand I bet there'd be those who were just happy their music was getting heard while others might resent it (especially if a band made a fortune from it and the original didn't get a fair cut of the profits). Also makes me wonder how many other songs I love actually have alternative original versions that I was never aware of.
  6. Ah yes, loving that Marchello cover. Guess it could be argued that they stayed true to the original in that the vocals kind of resemble James Brown's and it's kept the rock style. Plus good argument re Warrant's cover of We will Rock You that it kind of 'completed' what felt to be an incomplete song with the original. My 100% opinion (re not worth doing a cover unless you radically change it up) is swinging the other way. If you take a great song (or a mediocre song) and add something to it while retaining the original sound then I can see there's a place for them. Also, I guess if the vocals were the only thing that ruined a good song for you then it'd be worth doing a straight cover with someone else. Then I'd started changing my mind anyway when I thought about it because maybe there is a great piece but hardly anyone's heard it because it's by an unknown but then a big name records it, or a label backs it with a new singer and it reaches the masses (like Torn which Natalie Imbruglia made big). Plus I may never have heard Stairway to Heaven if Far Corporation hadn't covered it in the 80s because I'm a bit lazy about seeking out new music - I wait for others to do that for me or just stumble across it by chance. Glad to discover I do change my mind sometimes. From 100% 'no' to (almost) 100% 'yes' overnight!!
  7. I love this singer's voice, and the songs too. I thought she was Finnish but nope, she's Swedish so can post it on your thread
  8. 100% I don't think a cover should stay completely true to the original. If the original is brilliant then (unless you're a cover band) what's the point in doing a copy of it? Why can't the original just be re-released? I think to do a new version it should add something different. Hmmm, or maybe 90% I don't think it should (I guess there is a case to be made for reviving old classics for a new generation of fans with bands they can relate to). Now I'm gonna be thinking about this for the next few hours!!!! Some of my favourite change it up covers where I'm not sure I could say which I prefer = : Lacuna Coil - Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy the Silence' (Love both versions) Merrymouth - Stone Roses' 'I am the Resurrection' Adam Lambert - Tears for Fears' 'Mad World' Gabrielle Aplin - Frankie goes to Hollywood 'The Power of Love'
  9. Oohhh, Duran Duran, top music! 'Friends of Mine' and the intro to 'Rio' (plus the song itself of course) among some of my favourite tracks!
  10. Yaaay! Will check that out for sure. (Ah, my husband just said they've been promising that for the last 5years.) Maybe the fans need to start a campaign going!
  11. Here's one to give you nightmares. Actually it's so bad, it's good. Peter Stampfel's version of Goldfinger
  12. When are we gonna hear your version mate? Yeah. Not likely any time soon. I don't profess to be a guitar god. I only ever wanted to be an adequate campfire guitarist, and I believe I got there. Sadly I really don't have much time for much at all these days. Picked up the guitar the other day and my fingers fucking hurt now (it had been a while) Hard to play well, when you are worrying about the pain at every cord change. having said that the action on the guitar I was playing was pretty high. My greatest achievement was learning the start of Tesla's Love song, which I'm sure is a piece of piss for many here, but a hard fought struggle for me. I'm self taught, and it doesn't come to naturally for me I'm afraid - it's all hard work. Not hiding from it however, happy to put myself out there. here's a clip from a few years ago at Christmas with my kids. A little bit cringe at times, but it was all just a bit of fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r69H6DT9TZc Oh, that's beyond cute. Love it!
  13. ...so figured better late than never.. Hi all, I originally stumbled across the forum by chance as I'd spotted a post about Raw Silk and wanted to join in the conversation as I have a close connection to the current line up of the band. As I : 1.Love debating and discussing stuff (given the chance I'll question and query practically any subject to death) and 2. LOVE music and am always wanting to find out new good pieces of any genre to add to my collection I figured this site could well have it all! I don't stick to any particular genre but generally speaking my collection is a range of tracks from rock, country, folk and classical. Raw Silk, Storm Engine, Porcupine Tree, A Perfect Circle, NFAB, Merrymouth = bands I'm loving at the moment Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Bob Dylan, Dire Straits = some of my old classics. Not a big fan of rap or contemporary jazz but I wouldn't write anything off completely without giving it a chance. Thanks for being so welcoming and not telling me off for posting without introducing myself first
  14. Welcome! I'm a new member too and circumvented the system as I hadn't spotted this 'Introduction' thread (whoops I'd better go and start a thread for that). It's certainly a fun forum
  15. CureThe Sane reminded me of this Elton John song I'd forgotten and now I can't get it out of my head. (Funeral for a friend/Love lies bleeding). How many flipping drumkits has the guy got on the stage? I've got the vinyl of that album lying around in the attic somewhere if I remember rightly. May have to dig it out. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wAhpIjazFN0 I love Lacuna Coil's cover of Depeche Mode 'Enjoy the Silence' too, that gets put on repeat.
  16. Haha, I like making up new words (like some enjoy making up new sub genres). You knew what I meant though so maybe it should make its way into the dictionary. I definitely get why you need the major groupings (like Metal, rock, classical, C&W, jazz etc). Plus some sub genres (like baroque, atonal, operatic etc within the classical arena; bluegrass, traditional, contemporary etc etc within C&W for example). Plus, like you say, it is obvious why it would help in stores, magazines etc. I was questioning more why there are so many obscure sub genres and if that helps or hinders an artist if they get pigeon holed into a certain one. Also, if a band chooses (or their record label chooses to) categorise them as a specific genre or sub genre but they actually have a crossover sound then they could potentially be limiting their audience big time and surely the aim of most serious artists is to get their work out there to be seen, heard, worn or used - depending on what art form it is? On the other hand, creating niche markets for your work may well be the aim in which case sub genreing would actually be a positive thing. Guess it's one of those discussions that doesn't have a definite answer, it all depends on what the artist is after as well as what the audience is looking for and as everyone is beautifully individual there will be a billion trillion answers
  17. Ohhh I'd forgotten that Elton John song!! I used to play that over and over on full volume in my younger days
