  1. Geoff, you may have coined a term, 'cause if "angry Jesus metal" isn't an official category yet, it should be. You are not wrong in that the message is significantly bolder this time, something many fans of the band had been begging for over the course of the last several albums. I know you don't like it, but in their early days, Disciple were as blatantly Christian as any band out there, and only watered down the message to gain more mainstream acceptance. This actually irked many fans--not to mention the band went more & more commercial with every album--so this time around Disciple did the Kickstarter thing so they could do exactly what they wanted: play heavier music and write bold Christian lyrics again. You call it Jesus schlong-gobbling. I call it album of the year.
  2. For me, the song is nothing more than OK. The production is not even that...
  3. I've been a fan of this band since their indie days. This may just be their best effort yet, merging the heavier metallic sound of their early days with the more commercial style of their more recent offerings. Absolutely loving it.
  4. The adage goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. In this case, the thing that ain't broke is the Scorpions sound, so Unbreakable don't try to fix it, they just mimic it ... and do a pretty bang-up job. To read my full review for Hardrock Haven, click the link below: Unbreakable review Pretty good stuff as long as you don't mind the Scorps worship.
  5. Nice write up. I just shared it over on the Men's Adventure Paperbacks of the 70s & 80s Group I frequent on Facebook, where news of the Bolan movie has been a hot topic of conversation. I was a fan for years, but eventually turned my literary attention to action-thrillers that were less formulaic and more strongly plotted, but I'll still be buying a ticket if this actually gets made ... despite the planned, and off-putting, PG-13 rating.
  6. I still remember laying my hands on this baby back in the day and thinking, "Holy crap, they may have actually been able to top 'Slippery'!" When I got this assignment for Hardrock Haven, I thought, "Holy crap, it's been 25 YEARS?" I willingly took a trip down nostalgia lane to review this remastered Deluxe Edition of Bon Jovi's classic "New Jersey" album, complete with bonus tracks and a whole disc of demos. Click the link below to see if it's worth the double dip. Bon Jovi review It's an upgrade, no doubt. But is it worth the money, or should you avoid it like ... bad medicine. (Cue groans now.)
  7. That kind of mash-up would actually appeal to me ... and so does the song.
  8. One of my guilty pleasures. By pretty much any standard, it's a bad movie ... but for some reason I enjoy it.
  9. I'm sensing a f*cking theme here, but I can't quite put my f*cking finger on it...
  10. Norwegian hair-rockers Valerie are back with a limited edition (only 500 copies) 3-song EP follow-up to 2012's full-length debut and the band is still cranking out some pretty darn solid '80s-style commercial melodic rock. Click the link below to check out my full review over at Hardrock Haven: Valerie review A little Danger Danger, a little Dokken, a little Keel ... yeah, this one's worth checking out.
  11. This album wasn't just low-key in terms of publicity, I thought musically it was pretty low-key too. Not saying it's overly mellow or anything like that, but it's definitely poppier than his debut. I loved his first album--it nearly cracked my Top 10 that year--but I haven't even bothered to pick up this new one. All that said, it's not a terrible album by any means--and there are a few genuinely great songs on it--but overall, it's not the direction I hoped he would take.
  12. Here's some modern Christian bands whose sound would easily fit into Sirius Octane's format: Ashes Remain Decyfer Down Disciple Jonah 33 Kutless (their earlier stuff) The Letter Black Nailpoint Nine Lashes Pillar Red Seventh Day Slumber 7eventh Time Down Skillet This Fires Embrace Thousand Foot Krutch We As Human
  13. I guess I'll be the odd man out, 'cause I like that new song. Granted, it's not even close to Baz-era Skid Row quality, but for a heavy-edged hard rock song, it sounds pretty good to me.
  14. My favorite track off the album, a midtempo rocker with a latter day Bon Jovi vibe.
  15. This newest EP from guitarist-songwriter John Taglieri plays in the same "American working man rock-n-roll" territory as Springsteen and Mellencamp. Click the link below to read my full review for Hardrock Haven: John Taglieri review Perhaps too mellow for those who like it hard and heavy 24/7, but for its genre, this is solid stuff.
  16. Longtime Alice Cooper bassist Chuck Garric finally gets his side-project off the ground ... and it sounds an awful lot like Rob Zombie. Which is a good thing if you like Rob Zombie. Click the link below to check out my full review for Hardrock Haven: Beasto Blanco review If you're a fan of that industrial/electronic-tinged hard rock sound, this is well worth checking out. If you're not a fan of that stuff, avoid this like a syphilitic crack whore.
  17. Still one of the greatest voices in the history of hard rock, in my opinion ... and yeah, I like that track.
  18. With a new singer, Saliva have released their best album to date, eschewing almost all traces of their old rap/nu-metal sound in favor of crunchy modern hard rock that is loaded with big, catchy, radio-ready songs. To read my full review for Hardrock Haven, click the link below: Saliva review Bottom line, an unexpectedly good effort. Perhaps the departure of Josey Scott reinvigorated them.
  19. By now, you don't need a crystal ball to know what to expect from these guys. Click on the link below to check out my full review of the new Crystal Ball: "Dawnbreaker" album. Crystal Ball review Bottom line, they have a sound that works for them and they aren't breaking the mold on this release.
  20. Are you allowed to not like Statham movies and still call yourself a man?
