OSUKARU - Rock It Up (2016)

Swedish guitarist Oz Osukaru has been tirelessly fighting to position his band OSUKARU at the top of the Melodic Rock / AOR field for more than seven years. The problem always was the male vocalist change from album to album, but now seems Fredrik Werner has firmly occupied the slot and "Rock It Up", Osukaru's 6th effort, it's the first featuring the same singer.

It's obvious; when you get a stable line-up for more than a year, it pays its dividends. On "Rock It Up", Osukaru sounds and feels like a real band like never before.

As happened since the last album, this new recording shows the group much more inclined to Melodic Rock than the characteristic AOR sound of Osukaru's origins. Of course, there's ever present keyboards and melodies in the classic Scandinavian tradition, but overall the style is Melodic (Hard) Rock.

Think Talisman, Takara and alike, with the personal Osukaru vibe including occasional sax here and there, string arrangements, acoustic passages, etc.

'Rock It Up' opens with a punch driven by a hard riff and showcasing how much Fredrik Werner's vocals have greatly adapted to the band. A kickin' rocker with an extremely melodic chorus.

"Driven By Love" goes for AOR in classic vein yet with a modern sound akin Pride Of Lions, then 'Multiplied' is a melodic mid-tempo, a song with a strong Heart influence.

'Rock It Up (karaoke version)' could be taken as a filler, but it's really interesting as you can check how much the band has grown and how good sounds instrumentally.

The rest of the songs are the new recordings with Fredrik Werner at the mic, some re-worked old songs, some newer.

Finally, seems Osukaru has found stability and it's ready for a major step: a full length album with new material. "Rock It Up" shows a band tight & oiled, plus strong songwriting.

Production has been improved in recent Osukaru works, and while still is not perfect, comes very close to the final goal.

Really Good Scandinavian Melodic Rock / AOR.

I agree that was a problem, but the other thing that's not helping them out is that they keep releasing the same songs over and over again. I got genuinely excited when I saw this thread, because I honestly believe these guys could be at the top of the field, based on the quality of their last album... and what they've been working towards.

But again, like the last album which only had a small handful of new songs, we have only one new songs here. The songs they re-record are admittedly hugely superior to the originals and I like the re-recordings, but it's like they're treading water. And haven't they already even recorded half of these songs twice anyway?

I hope the new album of new material is not far away.

Oh, and they're selling themselves well short describing themselves as sounding like Takara/Talisman.

Hello! Oz here!

"Rock It Up" is not a full album but a 4-track CD single which we released exclusively for our tour this spring. It's not available in stores, nor will it ever be. You can only (legally) find it on our shows or in our Bandcamp store. I don't know how songs from our 2015 album "Transition" got mixed up in there but I assure you, the BANNED WEBSITE "version" of this release is nothing but a lie. It's NOT a new album and we are not marketing it as if it was. It's an exclusive tour item with 4 tracks and nothing else.

We ARE however releasing a new album this September and it will include nothing but all new songs. "Driven By Love" on the "Rock It Up" single was our last re-recording ever.

Also, I have heard that I look like Yngwie but I am actually NOT a fan of him. I do love the "Odussey" (mostly because of the songs and JLT's vocals) album and I like some of his tunes in general but that's about it... and I don't play Fender guitars.

Cheers!

I must apologise for my commentary above, then. Seems I was making comments based on false information, so my apologies.

As per my comments, I was puzzled as to why there were songs you had already re-recorded in 2015 supposedly being re-recorded again. Didn't make sense.

Absolutely love your stuff, and I cannot wait to hear a full brand new album.

Straight forward kind of tune, but it goes to demonstrate the quality of this band, that it sounds that great. I really enjoy that.

    • I was a pretty big fan. Nature Of The Beast is a killer song. Saw them with Dave Gleeson from the Screaming Jets singing and he did an amazing job, but pretty sure they have a new singer now  I recently went through the two most recent albums before this one and there were a couple of ok tracks, but mostly mid. Fun fact: I saw the Angels a couple of years before Doc died at the Middle hotel in Ferntree Gully and they seemed to hate each other. Pretty sure Doc said nothing to the crowd all night. Fun fact 2: when they were building the transit bar in Melbourne, a mate and I found a service elevator that went to the roof, which was under construction. After peeing off the roof, which is always fun, we realised that we could clearly hear the music 5 or 6 floors below from a DJ I think. He was playing Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again. We started yelling down the No Way Get Fucked, Fuck Off bit thinking we were hilarious. Then soon we noticed people looking up, and for some reason they seemed to be clearly hearing us. Another mate then called us to tell us security were on the way up the stairs so we took the service elevator down and managed to laugh it off. Stoopid drunk story I guess, but fun days.
    • Cheeky, getting your artwork in there. I wonder how you did that.  I like the vocal track on #1 and that'd be my pick. I personally don't dig the female versions of songs, because I'm not a female (yet?) and as these are songs written by ourselves I personally feel the best interpretation is an AI dude voice taking the place of your dude voice.
    • Yeah, that's great but this is obviously an accomplished musician probably completely in control of this output... not done with Suno, I'd bet. There's definitely dudes out there who are perfectly capable of doing their own music, like this dude, but for whatever reason might not be able to put a project together, again, for whatever reason... but this definitely feels a lot more like AI feeling in the missing gaps for someone otherwise in complete control of what he wants.  Either way, it is very cool indeed.  As Darkstone says, I'm not sure paying is the way to get the best results. I'm also not saying it isn't, especially with other platforms that are not Suno. I think already knowing what you're doing, musically, is the best way to get best results, personally. Suno, for example, is just perfect for someone who might enjoy writing lyrics but is not in any way shape or form an accomplished (or even adequate, lol) musician.  But yeah, it's pretty cool for some fun. I'm not sure if you checked out my links above. Keeping them pretty quiet due to lyrical content, lol, but you might dig some of the stuff in my links. 'As the moment passes by' and 'I'll wait for you' are two of my personal faves. Along with 'Faith to fall.'
    • Yeah, musically it's what you want, but vocally... Maybe Alex should take some vocal lessons from Ken Tamplin. ;}
    • Your Eyes - Darkstone (2024) Two versions of my song number 6     https://suno.com/song/e8c1e85b-21ee-4d35-a64b-e786f00944d2   https://suno.com/song/9144c77a-bd7c-49c1-9508-f724d0832fdb
    • Yep, although I was never a massive fan.
    • Yes, celebrating their fifty years. There only two original members left in the band. Dusty might agree with me the Angels died when the original singer passed away.
    • It's just not the same without the Doc though...
