Danny Spanos is best known for his 1983 Rock and Roll EP "Passion In The Dark" which produced the top 40 hit single "Hot Cherie" and received big airplay on radio stations nationwide in the summer of 1983. He also had songs on the soundtracks of 2 movies in 1983-84, Up the Creek used his song "Passion in the Dark", and the Tom Cruise movie All the Right Moves used his song "this could be our last chance".

 

He also released "Looks Like Trouble" in 1984, which had disappointing sales, and the only single released "I'd Lie to you for Your Love" received little airplay, and was later turned into a country hit by the Bellamy Brothers.

 

He had a video for the song "Excuse Me" from "Passion in the Dark" which made it into the MTV video rotation in early 1983.

 

Born and Raised in South Lyon, Michigan, he was known as George Spannos, and went on to play drums under his given name with several groups, including Redbone, known best for their hit song "come and get your love" in the 1970s. He also played drums on the theme music for the 1970s TV series Starsky and Hutch.

 

The melodic rock band Hardline did a cover of the song 'Hot Cherie' on their 1992 album Double Eclipse. The Original version of 'Hot Cherie' was performed by Canadian band Streetheart.

I really dig both Danny Spanos releases. I actually pick these both up when they came out in the 80's. I may just have to spin those before getting ready for the KIX show.

I love the Hardline version as it's one of the best MHR tunes of the early 90's and that album is just a classic IMO.

It's a true classic. It's very high up on my list over the best MHR songs.

Likely one of the few people who prefer the original version (that is the Streetheart one). Not a shot at Hardline at all; love their rendition as well.

 

Buried Treasure (the Streetheart album Hot Cherie came out on) is a killer release and one I hope will see a proper remastering on cd someday.

I found out quite a few years ago that the song was a cover, and took forever to hear the Spanos one (this was before youtube and torrents, and having to rely on shitty P2P sharing).

Never did find the Streetheart one, and forgot all about it til now.

 

I will say I wasnt impressed with the Spanos version.
